I was worried to read this article about how so many people, suffering at the moment with the virus in New York, are the ones who have been sheltered and remaining at home.
I thought I would add it to the discussion on here to see what people made of it.
My daughter is the extremely vulnerable category, and so is remaining at home for a minimum of 12 weeks and I am doing everything I can to protect her. |

This seems like a really weird statistic.
There is no explanation of what mechanism would lead to this, and I cannot think of one.
It is the opposite of the effect that other places have experienced.
Is there something specific about how New York functions that leads to this?
Perhaps the way the questionnaire is worded or how they respond?
I'm not medic, but if you need reassurance every other bit of advice and evidence indicates that your daughter is doing exactly the right thing. |

"I’m 12 weeks in too but I’ve heard could be extended another 12 "
I haven't heard anything regarding a second 12 weeks. I lose count of time (I do have a calendar, just not handy), I think it is approximately 6 weeks now since I received notification to keep her home for 12 weeks. |

I wonder if it's anything to do with apartment blocks sharing air conditioning. There are alot of apartment blocks in New York. Alot of slum areas too. A bit like being on a cruise ship. In fact you'd be hard pressed to find a semi. house. Like London densely populated and higher risk.
The lockdown principle works better in the right conditions. |

The answers in the article...
"Everything is closed down. Government has done everything it could. Society has done everything it could. Now it's up to you. Are you wearing a mask? Are you doing the hand sanitizer? If you have younger people who are visiting you and may be out there and may be less diligent with the social distancing. Are you staying away from older people?"
They haven't enforced things as strictly as they could have...
It's a sad state of affairs but if their numbers follow suit of other countries (why wouldn't they) they're looking at a lot more deaths. I pity then with Trump at the helm. |

Previos pister said no explanation...here are 2 possibles.
These people are staying at home....but who is visiting them? Dunno if thats happening but it could be.
We also know for certain that obesity is a significant risk factor. New Yorkers are not exactly famed for being slim! |
