"Government has said to many people have furloughed and we need to find a way out do you agree and what can we do about it"
What did they expect. Current figures are less than my prediction
Stay at home apart from essential journeys
Thus no one allowed out to buy stuff thus stuff sellers are stuffed and stay at home cos they are told to

We are doing OK of late. Have picked up work from furloughed firms so basically proves the point made by the OP. We are now all working from home so costs are much lower.
Hopefully we'll be able to hang on to the new customers. Maybe it will dry up eventually. Who knows. Keeping fingers and toes crossed here. |

That situation obviously everyone has to be furloughed, but other companies definitely have used it where they could have looked at alternative working arrangements instead
I read a post on here where a woman had to furlough her assistant but has taken on all the extra work herself , she said sales have gone down but the range they offer hasnt and therefore the work to procure hasnt (or something along those lines) ... in that scenario i think the company should have been trying to find a way for the assistant to also work at hone but its easier to just drop people onto furlough and save the cash, pushing the work onto the staff you have kept working
It was meant to be to prevent companies going under resulting in job losses, i think in many cases it is being used to protect profits , i just heard this morning outside my window, 2 people that clean the closes talking about another guy they work with who had been furloughed... we are still paying to have the close cleaned, I imagine all factors will be doing the same, the staff can distance by one person per close so again where was the need for furlough
It might also help though for the government to allow people to be taken on and off furlough or part time furlough etc as again many companies wont try alternatives that could bring people back to work safely, as once they have unfurloughed someone if it doesnt work out as planned they will be stuck with the burden of paying them or have to let them go |

To be fair they had to hash a policy together pretty quick.
It's catch all protection is now open to abuse.
But that becauses the government failed to act and most importantly plan before the spread of the virus.
I'm not sure what they expected from the the furlough when the economic "recovery" they built pushed people the workforce into unskilled Labour and the "gig" economy.
The economic fall out from all this is on the horizon and this shit is gonna shit is going to start hitting the fan in the next 8 weeks worldwide. |

They did hash a policy together quickly be ause they were fighting fire at that point, but it doesnt mean that they shouldn't now look at it in retrospect and improve given that its now clear some form of social distancing is here to stay And the plan needs a longer term solution |

Thats a fair point
I'm in favour of a lower salary threshold or at least tapering it after say 20-25k.
And more flexibility to work like others have said |

One problem the govt have is that they underestimated how many "self employed" there are who cannot furlough.
There is probably now pressure to get people back to work before the extension kicks in in late May. |

The treasury is currently paying 23% of the working population’s salaries (https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/business/2020/may/04/over-a-fifth-of-british-employees-furloughed-in-last-fortnight). Whichever way you cut it, this isn’t sustainable for more than a few months start to end. |

Yeah it’s definitely open to abuse from employers but as stated above it had to be put together very quickly. Personally as an employer it took pressure off to keep paying staff and I’ve already begun taking employees off it and back to work. |

Working in the theatre industry, I've no choice but to be furloughed. I think since March, I've managed 3 weeks in work and as it stands I've actually no idea when work can viably restart. |

From a business owners prospective... it depends what sector you work in but if turn over is down and the work isn’t there you’d be mad not to furlough your staff and hope for the bounce back (HOPE) which I think when this furlough scheme does come to an end there will be mass unemployment on a scale we haven’t seen before.
You wouldn’t be furloughing staff if you had the work there for them, you’d be loosing money if you did.
I think it’s a fantastic scheme that’s helped tremendously but it will come to an end I’m just glad I’m one of the fortunate that business has done extremely well through the pandemic long may it continue. |

I've not done a sausage of theatre work since putting a major tour into a venue on the 16th March, and taking it out again on the 17th...Had a couple of weeks of furlough payment to see out the contract, but I'd give anything for a couple of days of doing my 'proper' job right now |

"People have claimed furlough when they shouldn't of. Some people have taken as advantage of the scheme. No one can blame the government for wanting to cut back the claims."
Anyone who has bragged it will be chased up.
They weren't even checking when they were paying out |

I was one of those who didn’t qualify for furlough. I think I’ve had about three weeks work since last February. There are probably more in my position than those who abused the system. |

It'll be paid back like the debt incurred by the reparations paid to slave owners when they abolished slavery in 1837 which amounted to 40% of the national budget... very very slowly. The debt was finally paid in full in 2015... |

23% seems low to me I would guess more like 50% or more |

its probably better to go off the data than guess
it will appear to be a different level in different circles , i personally only know 1 person still on furlough, everyone else is either care/ healthcare/ construction/ teaching or able to work from home but im aware thats not representative of other circles |

i think we both know from the title of the news article thats not the scope meant by the poster... they are talking about furlough/ self employed schemes |

The article is from May (as is this thread, originally), so the data will be much different now. |
