No but I can guess, it's all the fault of the gay community? Or all the fault of the trans community?
He's a bitter angry confused man who would only write something that would interest Daily Mail readers. |

Curiosity got the better of me. There are at least 2 other headlines with the phrase I'd not seen before today "coronaphobia" and I stopped reading the bollocks he'd written when it was clear it was more if the same. Fucking idiot who thinks he knows better than scientists and doctors and seems to think we should have followed America's model while ignore how bad that's gone for them |

Ha yes. Apparently that is a think repressed gay men do. Act ultra homophobic to avoid their own feelings.
I bet Ralph Drollinger will end up being found in a gay orgy! |

Personally I think it's a well written opinion piece and a rational argument which not everyone will agree with, although this still being a democracy a person is entitled to express their view. |

Unless he's had his very own road to Damascus moment and prefaced the article with it to explain then yes most people will take their viewpoint that it will be as per the norm for him and therefore 'shit' for them..

Is it positive, uplifting, spreading a message of hope? Telling us that we can get through any crisis and that the world is a much better place than it was in the good old days?
Is it a message of celebration of human strength, diversity, love, tolerance and acceptance?
I fkn doubt it. |

Exactly. Always look at the track record of the person writing and the publication it's in.
It's important to note who is giving you information.
People are free to write and read anything they want to. But there is an onus on the reader to think about what they are reading, who wrote it, what their agenda is etc etc.
All stuff they should teach in school.
I've also got zero interest in reading what Peter Hitchings opinions on the current situation are. He has a track record of promoting misinformation, and spreading homophobia. |

I've read it. Never read any of his stuff before so I have no pre set opinion of the man.
The article has a couple of decent points, however I could not help but read it in the voice of a mad conspiracy theorist, think Jude Law in contagion or even better Woody Harrelson in 2012.
If he had written the article in a same, measured tone without all the insults then perhaps more people would read and take note.
PS always good to read all sides of the debate. |

He is simply stating that we are destroying the nation's wealth , questioning the validity of losing ourfreedom and the damage to our health .
If as he believes the government have over reacted the wealth of the nation is being frittered away .
If you are an employee who is furloughed, it may be that this relieves you from taking any financial responsibility for the state of the economy and as such maybe you do not care .
However anyone with a sense of responsibility will realise that the cost to the economy must be balanced against the number who might die ( and those who would die shortly in any event if it was not as a result of Covid 19 )
A lot of older people would prefer to enjoy the last few years of their lives in a sound financial position as opposed to have unnecessary restrictions places on then. Pensioners relying on dividend income will see their income plummet. Middle aged people will see their capital plummet.
At least Peter Hitchens is thinking long term and considering all sections of society. |

It's always good to look at both sides of a situation.
Personally I think most governments have acted from the position of looking at the worse case scenario and trying to control the speed of I faction spread to allow health services to cope, they and most sane people know that it cant be stopped and we all need to be infected apart the vulnerable who need to hide away. The economy now needs to take over as the priority |

I would seriously take no notice and just ignore the person you are responding to.
He/she deliberately attempts to invite arguments into the threads all the time.
If its a trump thread he/she will write "someone will be along to defend him any minute"
Or if its a thread with alternate views on whats happening it will be somthing like "the tin foil hatters will be along any minute".
And in this case you simply pointed out that no one was reading the article and yet all had come to a consensus that is was all crap and he/she comes along and says "might have known you was a fan" where i never seen anywhere in your posts saying you was a fan.
This person is everything wrong with these forums and why people can not just exchange opinions and views but in a adult respectful manner.
So dont raise to it and just ignore is the best way. |

No I don’t. I admit to being a subscriber to The Times.

Pat we often disagree but there are some points, not many mind in this that I agree with..
Then you went and put in that last sentence in, Hitchen has never considered all sections of society equally or with any decency..
To suggest otherwise is plain old nonsense and that's being polite.. |

As I've said twice on this thread I've read part of it. I could se lots of idiocy and misinformation and quite laughable hypocrisy on the part of the daily mail regarding civil liberties.
But in the interest of debate what pearls have I missed? Or are you accepting their are none in which case your criticism about people judging the article on the author's past record falls apart really doesn't it? |

At least Peter Hitchens is thinking long term and considering all sections of society. " I'm sure you're sincere in believing that Hitchens is thinking long term about the health of the economy. I'm not sure he is - sincere, that is. He's a witty, erudite man who can be charming and amusing, and a good dinner companion if you need an enfant terrible to spark the debate, but ultimately he's a charlatan. His beliefs are no more fixed than they need to be to get him an income that matches his estimation of his own worth. He's been a Trot, a Ken Livingstone supporter a centrist and now a born again Catholic conservative - who knows where he'll end up?
He's not even caoable of consistency - when it suited he attacked gay men being shown on TV, but he'll also defend the repuation of child abusing homosexual clergy. He decides on his approach to any topic not by asking himself what he believes, but who he opposes. It's safe to say, if you don't like Peter's opinions, then offer him more than he's currently being paid and he'll change thme. |

Everyone has acknowledged the impact that corona virus represents to the global economy. His claim about masks is misdirection. The centralised app that will be used for contact tracing presents a greater threat to civil liberties and privacy. |

That's not what the money he's talking about is for.
Otherwise just scrap Trident. There's enough money to fund the NHS, meet our emissions targets, home the homeless and feed the poor.

You're suggesting that 10% of the UK's workforce are employed by Trident. Wowsers. Where do you get this data from?
In anycase this was one way that these things could be funded. If the concern really was the NHS! |
