"Fantastic to hear this. Hopefully Scotland will do the same although i will not hold my breath."

It IS fantastic

But I'm hoping it wont be taxed.

And that instead of continually saying " we appreciate our care workers" we really appreciate them, and start paying them a decent wage.

It concerns me that Colonel Toms money will end up in a few back pockets too.

I think rather than it being spent on new family lounges in hospitals, it should go directly to the nurses and doctors

A cash sum

I understand...listening to first minister for Wales that it is ALL registered care workers...not just in care homes.

As fot tax and NI he very publicly asked HMRC to make it exempt from tax and NI and also to not be counted against benefits. Lets hope Rishi was listening and in Picardesque style makes it so!

Here is £500 when they should actually be paying them an extra £4k-£5k every year more than what they currently do.

£500 is not near enough

I'm in a senior role in a care home so am fortunate to earn a bit better money but the care assistants, domestics and kitchen assistants are all on minimun wage. This will be a welcomed gift for all of us but what they need to do in the long term is raise the hourly rate paid to match the level of responsibility care assistants in particular have. This will never happen in the private sector unfortunately. The company I work for are already paying all staff 30% extra for all hours worked above 30 hours during the lockdown period which is far better than many

If you're caring for someone at home and are struggling there is no shame in asking for help. Your local social services department should be able to advise and support

£500 is almost an insult.

86% of care homes in the UK are privately owned and excessively profit making.

They pay a minimum wage and were not prepared with PPE - shame on them.

All Care and NHS workers deserve so much more than £500

It's worth revisting the conservatives clapping and happy when they voted against pay rises for nurses.

These sectors are underpaid and have been undervalued

Actually they were told to not take from the nhs supply and let hospitals have first pick of ppe or they would have run out weeks ago, many news have reports on it

It's not the care homes fault on lack of ppe. I do think they should have locked down very tight from day one though.

It will be taxed since its paid as PAYE system. Care homes will keep paying min wage to lower workers I am afraid. Unless rules say otherwise that's how it is. If you hike up wages many carehomes will close down. Obviously everyone want to be paid more and its harsh when you do a hard job but that's the reality of these jobs.

They need to increase the minimum wage then.

That will all be great when care home owners see profit go down and sell their land to property developers.

It has been like this for decades, Tories and Labour equally at fault, but now is not really the time for politics.

I am sure that you are right, but either way it is time people stopped blaming the Government for the lack of PPE.

Hopefully a pay rise will be on the cards but £500 is better than nothing for now.

Agreed - you never see a poor care home owner (the owners of one near me have his and hers Porsches)

... With their wonderful skilled staff on at or near minimum wage
