Face coverings - making your own
Jump to: Newest in thread
It's been said we will hear more about face coverings in the briefing next week. Boris has however indicated that he feels that face coverings will pay an important part of easing the lockdown ( they are using the term face coverings to distinguish between medical masks )
Will you be making your own... have you got any top tips.
My top tip is to use nylon stockings sewn into the middle of your layered covering and its suggested to have 3... one for wearing...one for in the wash and one for spare.
This isnt for arguing if they help... as even the scientists cant seem to agree except that a face covering helps stop the spread... but doesnt really stop you catching it unless it's a properly fitted and you know how to wear and use one properly |

I've made several in fetching and stylish fabrics . Mine have a space to insert a folded piece of kitchen roll. I understand they don't protect me but may protect others from me.
They have the added bonus of hiding the tiny vertical lines around my mouth |

And yes leaving a pocket in them is a good call. What are you using for the mose bridge. I'd knocked some bendy thin metal that I use for making teddy's with poseable arms etc.. but running out now |

I purchased a couple of masks from Wowcher that you just slot a filter into. I can then wash one while using the other.
I also have about 50 small squares of mask material that can be cut to fit into the shape of the filter section so am going to do that if need be.

I have some jewellery making findings - wires with a loop on one end. I make a loop at the other end so it doesn't pierce the fabric and put two of them together. |

I've seen that pipe cleaners can work too for the nose bridge?. I'm going to try to make some. I've currently got a bikers face scarf that I'm gonna attempt to add in a pocket to place filters in.

My sister made quite a few. Posted dozens to other sister who works in a medical centre so proving very popular.
Gave me half a dozen....a few for a lady friend of mine who is a private care worker.
Check the pic on my profile to see the funky mask I've been wearing... |

" I thought about that but on a crafting site they had advised against it ( if your washing them)
One thing I did notice is people cashing in.. the little plastic covered ties with mental running through them that you use for sandwich bags etc... £7.50 for a 100.. |

Wow! That's ridiculous. Ohhh good thinking about the washing bit.. I wonder if I can make a pocket for the nose thing so I can take it out?? lol. Fed up of buying ones that just don't fit right. I'm not very crafty wise but I'll give it a go |

Pipe cleaners work fine if you take them out before washing, if you sew a thin tube along the top you can slide it in and out easily. I've been making them for weeks for family and friends, got to keep busy somehow knocked up a few of the hand bands with buttons on too but as many of us wear glasses or hearing aids in our family I've had to adapt the ties anyway to avoid those so ear rubbing isn't too much of a problem. You can use any non-woven material as your filter; kitchen towel, a dry baby wipe etc but I've found so far most effective household item to use is a cut up new unused hoover bag. Depending on your type of hoover they might be HEPA. My Hetty uses those so her bag supply has been raided lol. |

I've asked my friend who is a seamstress to make ours out of kids animal patterned fabric with a filter pocket for the adults and kids sizes, so they are fun to wear as we don't know what the requirements for school will be yet. |

That's a great idea making them fun to wear for kids, so there is no stigma associated with them, good thinking
Maybe a hot wife one might raise a few eyebrows at the school gates |

I've learned a lot about face coverings and their effectiveness since the outbreak.
Anyone who watched GOGGLEBOX last week will have seen LEE make one from a sock. So simple. No sewing. I made one and it was great but I need to make one from a larger sock not a kids trainer sock. Brilliant tho.
I bought a cycle dust mask with one velcro band around the neck and goes up over the nose........ FABULOUS to wear and to look at and much better than those stupid little paper things with string on ....
There are loads of ways of making them just ask YOUTUBE
Better still .......... Wear a scarf and when you go into a shop or onto transport pull the scarf up and over your mouth.
People need to STOP going to expense and trouble.
Buy nothing wear your scarf...... |

I took the link off cos it wasn't a news site so .......
Look up T shirt NO SEW face mask pattern.
There are loads that don't need sewing.
JUST LIKE YOUR SCARF.
Good thing about your scarf is you can still use it AFTER Covid. |

I won't cum from it but I get pleasure from sewing, doing little things like that. Keeps me sane in this climate...or is that the first sign of insanity? |

I'm torn between the full face snorkel mask or the Boris letter box hijab look(irony).

quick tip for everyone.
If you can move a flame or blow it 0ut with your breath behind the mask, its not worth wearing it. And the people I've seen wearing them are doing so incorrectly. |

I printed a pattern off after googling 'no see face masks' after seeing a post on here. It was very simple, not sure how effective it will be but will make me feel better when I go back to work. Must try blowing a candle out.
Do you think if the government bring in wearing mask if you work with the public/go out employers will have to provide them? |
