Its only been just under 5 weeks...! I mean the "lockdown" which has caused changes in our lives. The older generation put up with 6 years of WW2. Many countries in Europe under a much stricter lockdown under the Nazi regime.
Come on chaps and chapesses. Stiff upoer lip and all that.... |

Most people are fully supportive of the restrictions and it's generally conservative politicians who have been pushing to get it lifted, whinging about needing liberty, from remote country estates.
Polls this week want it extended until it's safer |

Tbh I don't think op is referring to people who have genuine reasons to complain.
I think it's directed at "those" people who are the selfish (hopefully) minority who's attitude is fuck everyone else,no one can tell me what to do..... |

I really don't agree.
During the war life went on as usual for most people. They were allowed to visit houses, cinemas, theatres etc . They were allowed to have holidays.
It's worse NOW. People are well and truly isolated. Especially if they live alone.
Almost all businesses have ceased to exist. Many wont return. The dole queues will be longer than the 30's
This will last for a good while yet. New born babies will be toddlers and the death toll will be greater than WW2.
More lives are lost each day to coronavirus than any war ever killed.
Some people need to read HISTORY instead of popular history.
Take of your rose tinted specs about the war years and people of the past.
I think today's population are showing grit and spirit and kindess...... good on all the chaps n chapesses. |

It's 2020 not 1940. Not just the uk but the world is a different place
Why does the "war" get rolled out everytime the uk needs to justify austerity or restrictions on the public.
Men went to war to protect our liabilities and freedoms not be poster child for social and dictorial control.
The irony is the only dictatorship left in Europe is Belarus. And they have no lockdown and no restrictions at all
And as for a stiff upper lip...that probably explains half the stigmatism and mental health problems in the uk.
England... Its OK to feel.
And right now I think I a lot of people are trying to get their head around really tough times ahead |

Suck it up. I lost my nan last week and I can't go to the funeral.
A couple of right wing greedy capitalists want the money stream to start flowing and are using buzz words like freedom and liberty to get us all worked up. But remember when it comes to real freedom and liberty, they are the first to find ways to take them away from us. |

My grandad absolutely loved any type of mouldy cheese, or even cheese that had just gone mouldy.
He ate it every day of his life.
He rang me up one day to say that he had heard on the radio that eating mouldy cheese could take years off your life, so he wasn't going to eat it anymore.
He was 88 |

My nan is 84
She was 3 when ww2 started
The older generation dont know this shit anymore than the rest of us.
During ww2 people still got to see friends and family. Jobs were plentiful and pubs were open. |

If we think the halcyon days of ww2 was a shining example of etc etc and carry on we are pretty much deluding ourselves..
There were still the dregs being shit bags, thieving etc and all that goes alongside most of us normal types getting on with it..
And its been the same most likely in all civilisations during times of war and crisis..
So whilst this is unpredictable and unprecedented in our lifetime and those of our grans we will plod on and get through it..
In some ways this could be bigger than anything even our parents and grans went through and part of getting through it might be to try not to look too far ahead or too deeply into it, if there is that luxury..

Whilst I agree completely with the rest of your post I must take exception to this one statement.
Although records are not complete the estimates for dead in WW1 range from between 17.5 and 40 million, and WW2 is between 60 and 120 million people. The mean average is 23.5 and 84 million respectively.
Up to now 216 thousand people have died of this virus. Tragic though this figure is, and I am not belittling the pain this has caused, it does not compare with the WW figures above, or other comparable wars.

As ww2 lasted approx 6 years which is about 2190 days and had approx 80 million deaths which equates to about 36500 a day and Covid is no where near that on average it’s at with a total of 24000 in what 4 months that’s would average out at aprox 200 a day so far no where near the loss and don’t forget people have recovered from it and it’s not all negative unlike being killed at war you don’t recover from that
Yes this is a hidden enemy and it’s everywhere but it can’t in anyway be classed as anything like any war as it’s not a war against any person or regime it’s a war on a whole different level And we will get through this but also the recovery will be for years and years to come with loss of businesses higher taxes and recession like never seen before so times will be hard really hard but be thankful for your health and what you have while you have it as there are thousands taken before there time and a lot of broken families who are hurting now more than ever but they are the strongest out there as there still getting on and can’t even griev properly |

I'm glad you answered this I literally ch0ked on my coffee when I read her statement. Talk about ignorance of history!
Almost 60,000 soldiers were casualties on the 1st day of Battle of the Somme WW1 of which nearly 20,000 died.
The Somme Offensive, caused the loss of more than 1.2 million lives from both the British-French Empires and German Empire.
As sad as the death figures for covid19 are they are a drop in the ocean compared to the lives lost to wars.

What you need to realise is that the virus isn't going anywhere in the same way that HIV is still very much around. We just need to learn to live with it and yes unfortunately that means that some lives (all with underlying health conditions so far) will be lost.
Coronaviruses were first discovered in the 1930s and in 90 years there hasn't been a single vaccine for them so don't assume for a minute that there will be a miracle vaccine soon and we can all go back to living our normal precovid lives. |

Our children still live at home, not yet ready to fly the nest. I'm a firefighter, currently seconded to the Ambulance Service. My wife is a nurse in ICU. My daughter is a final year student nurse now working in ICU. My son is an NHS support worker.
Last week we had our first day off together in six weeks. We cried. We weren't together, we were using modern technology to try and be a family. We cried a lot. We have endured a torrid time, and know we must continue to do so, but it's hard.
I go to bed from a night shift in Oxford, knowing what my wife and daughter are stepping into 150 miles away. They go to bed knowing what I will face.
Our son only works daytimes, 51 out of 52 so far, and he knows full well what his family are doing, and he tries not to think of it.
We would love to sit in a cafe or bar together and catch up. But right now we can't even sit in the same county together as a family.
I see people everyday flouting the rules, but I can't do anything about it. In many ways I would be stupid to try, too many knifes around even today.
All I want to do is scream at them about how much other people are suffering, but they won't care. No one is oblivious to the situation today, ignorance is no longer an excuse. These people do it knowingly.
The tragic thing is, they don't see the effects of what they do. They don't see the households ripped apart, the routes of transmission that kill someone else's mother, someone's son, someone's friend. They just see that they have had their bit of sunshine, their coffee, their fun.
We'll keep going, we have too. we don't have the capacity to dismiss it as another generations problem.

There will be no " normal" for a long time yet.
There will soon come a time, where we have to balance a smaller amount of people dying against getting th economy going again. Without the economy, there is no NHS, no public services, no benefits system.
So all the people sticking two fingers up to the travel restrictions and those who flout the lockdown, all they are doing is delaying that return to our new kind of normal. |

Thank you.
If you read the statement above .........
It says more are lost EACH DAY to coronavirus than were lost in a war.
So there is little point in you quoting the final death toll for entire wars that extended across years.
But thanks for the input and the figures
Spanish flu killed about 50,000,000 worldwide and 228,000 alone in Britain.

I do want to add that I have no time for the whingers either ..... it's hardly difficult just not as easy as usual.
I'd call me a whinger. Me in a nice , decent sized home with a garden, being paid for not going to work, managing to do my garden for once and do odd jobs that I don't usually have time for around the house and keeping it tidier and doing some spring cleaning, talking to family and friends on up to date technology, being able to walk to the shops daily and buy nutritious food and cook it when I want and eat what I want and turning my hand and mind to new interests and exercising more so that my health is improved overall.
Compare that to someone who has lost their income and is stuck in a pokey hole with children they can't feed as they would want or keep warm or entertain 24/7 ?
Or people with physical or mental challenges ???
They are not whinging they are crying for help.

"Exactly OP.
I think that there are a lot of people who really need to wake up and realise how pathetic they're being.
There are a lot of people who would be totally fucked in the event of Nuclear fallout.
Can you imagine it?
Wouldn’t everyone be fucked in the event of a Nuclear war. Lots of Russians died because of Chernobyl. And what has nuclear fall out got to do with Covid lockdown ?????"
It was ukrainians and belarusians that suffered with chernobyl...need to learn geography...Chernobyl is located in ukraine close to Belarus..1000s died no one will say how many or what the long term.effects of radiation exposure is doing to them.. |

"I've just misquoted myself here is the original sentence.
More lives are lost each day to coronavirus than any war ever killed.
I meant daily death rates. "
I hate myself for adding to this but I want to save someone the time of coming back and quoting 'battle' figures...... those figures were exceptions not rules. |

Thank you for the clarification.
However, 80 million divided by 2190 (the number of days in the six years of the war) = just over 36,500 deaths per day or 255,000 in an average week. COVID deaths since the start of the pandemic several months ago is less than the mean average for one week of WW2. |

Can i just clarify the point of my initial post. I am NOT talking about people who have lost loved ones, front line workers, those with genuine mental health issues etc. Many of whom are NOT whinging.
Its the countless others who are devastated because they can't go for a pint to the pub or are missing "the match".....trivia compared to what's going on out there.... |

"Most people are fully supportive of the restrictions and it's generally conservative politicians who have been pushing to get it lifted, whinging about needing liberty, from remote country estates.
Polls this week want it extended until it's safer"

80 million is the established figures for total deaths attributed to the 2nd World War.
Almost all studies agree the range is between 70 - 85 million.
As the poster showed based on the length of the war that averages to far higher daily death figures in WW2 than covid19.

Maybe that would help with their mental health, you won't know that
