I don't know about you but if the internet collapsed right now I would be totally lost. So if we take a step back to pre internet and a further step back to pre television can you imagine the death toll from this pandemic would likely be in the millions just in this country alone. So can we count ourselves lucky? |

people in general were less stupid than today so if they were asked to stay in by radio or newspaper etc they would more than likely do it.
People wouldn't be desperate to go to the supermarket because they were out of necessities like chocolate (yes I've seen people shop just crisps and chocolate)
There wouldn't be 2 million Facebook pandemic experts either

Interesting I am on virgin and had problems no internet for about 15 mins no big deal.
The world ran perfectly well without the internet,there was still swinging,still clubs,friendships real and not cyber.
Plenty of news about.
Life wa better before the internet in many ways but is a sad necessity of modern living.Hate mobile phones,love privacy

People are more used to technology now..so miss it more when it's not there. |

It is a pity that people rely on the internet so much,it causes so many social problems to many.
To many telly channels to so eberyone is watching different things no common thread to link us.
Society is very sick in my few and technology is to important to people,we are all change because of it in many cases for the worst.
I know very few share my views but they will not change |

Don't forget the millions that thought the USA was being invaded by aliens 80 years ago because they heard Orson Welles reading War of the Worlds on the radio and all those muppets that believed spaghetti grew on trees thanks to Panorama in the 50's.
The internet isn't solely responsible for people being stupid....

The difference is they didn't know any better back then so the war of the worlds probably was frightening for some.

I'll go with less stupid in general and more respectful/compliant of authority like police and the other services but maybe there politicians and the like didn't all have there heads in the trough looking after themselves which caused mistrust ? |

That's because "knowledge" is instantaneous. We don't have to store knowledge the way we used to. I think we use our brains to a lesser capacity than previous generations. Which is agreeing with the dumbing down, just that it's more complex than the phrase suggests. |

It's the new generation's reliance on technology that would lead to problems. As a kid I had the 1-12 times tables drummed into me from about 5 years old.
I've been in bars/catering for over 20 years and always do stockchecks manually. Anyone under about 30 I work with can't do it without a calculator even though almost all stock is delivered in multiples of 12.
It would actually be a really interesting (and funny for some of us!) social experiment to turn the internet off for 24hrs without telling the population. Maybe sometime next year though! |

I don't have broadband haven't since around 7 years ago.
I use my mobile data and a hubthing that is a pay as you go topup, lasts a month.
And for my laptop to print, technology is over rated. But imagine putting the kids of today in front of the old dail up lol |

There's a certain irony in reading some of the comments about the evils of technology and the Internet, on a forum, on the Internet, which presumably is being accessed on technology.
I for one am very grateful that we have the technology and the Internet because it is enabling me to keep in touch with friends and family, allowing me to work from home and helping my kids get access to their education. |

Love technology and I'm glad we have it. It can be used with positive or negative intentions but isn't that down to the human using the technology not the actual technology itself.
I think I'd survive without it, quite creative and good by myself so wouldn't want it to go but if it did I think I'd make it work  |
