No it hasn't, the reason it got so bad is due to people's ignorance to it with the "it won't happen to me" attitude...
We are fully aware that the corona viruses are particularly virulent and to treat it with contempt has been a mistake; SARs, MERs, H5n1 were just a warning shot, this one is the real deal... |

Flu should be over-hyped, it kills a lot of people every year - but we have a vaccine. (if you choose to have it).
Dementia and Alzheimer's kills a lot of people (1 in 8 !!) every year and is way under-hyped. Almost not noticed by the general population.
We have no vaccine for COVID 19 so yes it needs all-the-hype that we can give it.

This guy, head of IT at ITV - he thought he was fine, next day he was dead.
It’s a killer, it’s virulent and unpredictable.

It’s not just that, Covid is so much more infectious and we have not even a partial immunity to it.
Flus are similar so we are able to resist them better. This is novel to your immune system and spreads far more easily.
I’ve got high risk parents and I’m desperately trying to keep them safe. |

"Cars are overhyped , thousands are killed in road accidents but you never hear any official figures published "
There were 27,820 killed or seriously injured casualties (KSIs) in reported road traffic accidents reported to the police, for the year ending June 2019. This compares to 26,724 in the year ending June 2018. The total number of casualties decreased by 5% to 157,630.
You can find them on ONS or Asset Publishing |

No. Its casualty rate varies, depending on the quality or not of government action and public perception is shaped by the media.
If something is so infectious that it could infect millions of people within a year, without controls, is that something that's over-hyped? Something that is going to be the cause of the biggest recession in a century?
Or would you prefer it to be a little story, with limited attention and advice on how to avoid it? |

It may seem that way because most countries have introduced lock down measures to help prevent the spread. Had that not been the case then we would probably be looking at millions dead around the world.
Also don't forget that it's still here, and won't be going away anytime soon. We're still at the beginning of this crisis, and because lockdown can't last indefinitely and we have no other way of preventing infection, we are bound to see many more people succumb to it before this is all over.
(I borrowed lots of other people's words. Sorry people.) |

I feel that the risk of death has been over hyped by the media ... it very much feels, due to the way the concentration of the media is on the deaths there’s a feel to it that getting covid-19 means you will die ... where the odds in the most case are very much not that it is the minority of people that get the virus that die. The figures being used can also be further diluted as they really only show the death rate of those that end up in hospital or have had a test for the virus. To this extent I believe there is a level of over hype. |

H5n1 sounds more like a flue virus, which would mean it wasn't a corona virus.

Generally no it's not been overhyped but, with a death rate of around 1%, the actual danger of death has been. However, left unchecked, a 1% death rate here in the UK would actually mean about 500,000 people dying.

It’s not a binary question, boomers still run things in the west , it’s a disease that affects boomers in the west , but it’s just another disease , there’s already plenty that kill much much higher numbers of children and no one cares.
11 million children die each year (30,000 per day) from mostly preventable illness . |

No
Not in the slightest.
The world we lived in is not what we will go back to straight away.
Lives have been changed forever because of this.
Ways of working in and out of hospitals have changed for the long term.
Covid wards will continue.
PPE will continue in every department
Social distancing in the community will continue.
This will not go away after lockdown ends. The disease has not disappeared.
Mutations will occur and worryingly we could be seeing one in children now.
It is still unsure whether having the virus means that you are immune from it.
Viruses are absolute fuckers, especially new ones.
Vaccines will be found, eventually.
Antibody testing will be found useful, eventually.
I do wonder what people are focusing on to think that it has been overhyped.
I would love someone to tell me.
Until eventually, as a health worker I ask people to look at this differently. Whilst you might think that its overhyped and wanting your ‘normal back’. When you rush back into meets and gangbangs and parties down the pub I’m still scared to hug my family because I don’t want to give it to them.
My ‘normal’ will Not return until vaccine or antibody testing is accurate or we have a R0 of 0.

Over-Hyped
* Regionally yes
* Nationally no
* Globally under-hyped
It has exposed just how ill-prepared we are as a species and a country to deal with "plagues". We all learned at school of the black death, and whilst the mode of transmission different and the mortality rate much higher, the idea that an infection can so rapidly spread through a population has been known for 100s of years and yet we are only now learning how to put in plans to limit transmission and effectively control a spread.....
Oh well... it'll be in text books for the next 100 years.

No, we have been very lucky in the south West, but its particularly rural so people are more spread out. We lost family member to it in Midlands in just a few days after being diagnosed. I have little idea what is ahead of us all, but think it will be different for some time. Can see places like London with population density, with travel etc being a headache to get organized. |

They would have had less casualties if they had introduced the lockdown earlier like their neighbours did. " we wont know that till years down the line. What they are saying is that it was pointless to lockdown fully as it would damage the economy and that a lockdown would stop infections for a time but when you opened it up, new infections would occur . So till years later we wont know what was the right action to take. As it will be total deaths after lockdowns have occured or not that will matter...
No one knows and that is the truth of it. And lockdown and social distancing is only going to be adered to for a certain amount of time.
This week places have been just as busy as before lock down.. locally apart from the queues you would have thought it was lifted |

The lock down was so if you did end up at hospital they would have a bed rather than say sorry, go home and die. It has worked in the sense we had the capacity to treat the sick, but over time they say we may all get it, hopefully in a milder form as some have. Still quieter than usual where we are, which is a good thing. |

It doesn't show how many have died from COVID 19 directly following a positive test. "
It shows a comparison of deaths from all causes over a 5 year average with an overlay of 2020 deaths. That upward curve is horrifying.
It also shows influenza and pneumonia as a 5 year average with an overlay of 2020 figures. That is also overlaid with a line showing Covid-19 deaths. |

That would be pointless as care home deaths have not often been tested , those tested in hospitals only have an estimated 70% accuracy. The inadequate and accuracy of testing unfortunately is another aspect of this. |

I agree but it still doesn't give an accurate number of deaths directly from COVID 19.
The rapid rise is accumulated deaths during the COVID 19 breakout.

No.
The biggest killer prior in the UK was heart disease. That took out approx 40,000 a year.
This has took out over 20,000 in 2 months.
Imagine if we had not gone into lockdown.... |

"The data on the graph only shows the accumulated amount of deaths.
It doesn't show how many have died from COVID 19 directly following a positive test.
That would be pointless as care home deaths have not often been tested , those tested in hospitals only have an estimated 70% accuracy. The inadequate and accuracy of testing unfortunately is another aspect of this.
Exactly so how can the graph be an accurate representation of correct amount of deaths due to covid.
If you think about it can only be worse than what is reported...
E.g. those tested positive plus 30 %"
Or 50% higher if you include care homes
So definitely a NO |

It's not possible to get accurate figures with:
1. lack of testing
2. False negatives
This means the figures we are seeing are an underestimate. My cousin passed away 3 weeks ago from what was obviously Covid but no mention of it on his Death Certificate |

"yes definitely
the response is absolutely insane
Sweden hasn't locked down and nothing abnormal is going on there"
So, you're suggesting that if we didn't have the UK lockdown nobody would be dying? |

Sweden hasn't locked down and nothing abnormal is going on therereally? Sweden's mortality rate from covid19 is ten times higher than Finland, four times higher than Norway and twice as high as Denmark."
In addition England has a 10 fold more population density than Sweden .
I assume the Australian outback also doesnt need the same level of lockdown? |

No disrespect but how was it obvious. People don't die from Covid most seem to have breathing difficulty but also can be caused by "normal" flu |

When ever will everyone wake up to the fact that apart from those who die it is not about death
It is far more than that I for one would refuse to treat any one who acted like a twat - thankfully I am not in healthcare to have to choose |

No I don't think it has, but the media do keep repeating the same information, which may give the impression it has been but they do that with everything, could be a by product of how slowly we are moving through the crisis coupled with learning and release of findings/information about the virus and government's next move.
It's a very upsetting sad time. |

"Binary question ..... has cv-19 been over-hyped?"
Just thought it interesting to share the 'perhaps 'preliminary' results of our little poll with everyone. The scores on the doors are:
Total = 145 posts
2 posts from me (the OP)
27 posts for Yes (over-hyped)
50 for No (not over-hyped)
66 did not answer the question (either by posting on an abstract theme or frankly getting their knickers in a twist with other post contributors)
Clearly at the moment the take away thought is 35% are saying cv-19 has been over-hyped and 65% are not. It will certainly be interesting to poll again in say 4 weeks time.
Thank you for contributing |

She was in a nursing home with flu like symptoms ( with the flu season basically over ) with the 2 nurses tested positive, it was really obvious but it was put down as temporary failure with no doctor ever examining. |

No it hasn’t been overhyped.
The Government were to blase to start with, distracted by Brexit and not taking it seriously. As a consequence more people have died than should have.
This is a dangerous disease, more should have been done to get PPE for NHS staff and Care Homes. More should have been done for anyone that has to regularly interact with the public.
The Government haven’t listened to ‘the science’, they have made political decisions and allowed too many people to die. |

The consequence of the virus isn’t over hyped. Come and see people literally drowning as their lungs fail.
The fear people are living with isn’t over hyped as lots of people are very fearful of catching the virus.
I think there are lots of people over hyping. People claiming to have had the virus; the pain the media is generating; the blame of doing too little/ too much/ the wrong thing.

Virus over hyped ? No
Over analysed ? Fuck yes
I am sick to death of the media trying to explain stuff they don't understand
Currently watching some shit on bbc news about whether we have antibodies and whether we will have immunity for about the hundredth time this week
We all know the fucking theory.
Covid 19 hasn't been around long enough to know if we have immunity
Oh I give up ...

"Remember that without lockdown and social distancing most of us wouldn't be alive today!"
I think you are over egging the pudding a little there. Given the case fatality rate is less than 1% most of us have nothing to worry about. If you are under 60 and of healthy weight, you are probably more likely to be run over by a bus than die from cv19. |

Yeah this pretty much backs up my point above ... the chances of most members of the population dieing from this is low ... but the media has hyped the chances of dieing to the point that some people think of you get the virus your going to die. This fear is driving a lot of people’s reactions to a lot of the news. |

"No
Not in the slightest.
"
Great post, 100% agree, our sentiments exactly! |

Yes, massively.
40,000 people in the UK die every year (many more suffering years of ill health) because of air pollution. Not a single vehicle has been locked down from our towns and cities anywhere.
Are they lesser deaths?
