It highlights the difficulties of the model that we use for much of our healthcare. I opened a thread at the beginning of the outbreak with similar content.
The pharmaceutical industry has goals that are at odds with a humane basis for global healthcare. It can potentially deny treatment for the majority of the world, if they don't deliver the returns that a monopolistic supplier demands - it can decide if it even wants to deliver treatments to any of the world.
Whilst little populist men behave similarly to dictators in their own countries, we face the risk of too few people committing to the common good and being true leaders, as they insist on thinking small - stealing supplies bound for one country, as they sit on planes about to depart etc.
The G7/20 member states should be aiming to change things for the benefit of all of humanity, revisiting whether the current capitalist model for the pharmaceutical industry is really the best for us all.
Patents will likely be created and enforced for upcoming vaccines. |

The countries involved in the development and manufacturing will get it first and then their closest friends...as always happens with everything.
I only hope that the UK will be willing to get a vaccine developed in EU, if it will be ready before the Oxford one. I hope they turned on mobile notifications for the e-mails this time. |

Doesn't work like. These are still businesses and the operate in very complex legal regulatory systems. You can't just open it up.
"Ensure there is no patent on the drug. Open it up to all labs and ramp up manufacture. That way you reduce the need for any discussion"
