20,000 Deaths Milestone

Burgess Hill & Birmingham

This was suggested as a good outcome with this outbreak by Sir Patrick Vallance. We've now surpassed it without including deaths outside of hospitals.

10% of ALL Covid19 deaths worldwide have occurred in the UK. Similar death rates in France (13%), Spain and Italy (11%).

I mean compared to the USA its good, given they account for nearly 27% (54,124) of deaths worldwide. But not so good compared to Germany (3% - 5,873) and Turkey (1.3% - 2,706)

Now the good outcome has been missed; for want of a better word, I wonder what the new "good" target would be 30K? 40K?

Well we are probably already above 40000 with the deaths outside hospitals.

20000 was just the best possible outcome in the Imperial College models.

I don't think they really thought it was plausible with our soft lockdown... they hoped for it.

It's very difficult to predict how things will go especially since it is not clear what the govern wants to do with the lockdown. It doesn't look like this govern will be able to make any unpopular decision.

The upper estimate was 500,000

So we are still well within the lines

Think we'll hit 40,000+ reported know. Still don't think we've fully peaked and think we'll be hit by a second wave after lockdown due to social distancing failures.

Because they aren't a densely populated country!

If you included nursing homes in the figures it must be way higher.

One of my close friends works in one and has been so upset this week, as the virus has arrived there.

How many of them are deaths caused by the virus? Apparently nobody dies from accident, cancer, or old age anymore. I dispute the number atributed to the virus!!!

"How many of them are deaths caused by the virus? Apparently nobody dies from accident, cancer, or old age anymore. I dispute the number atributed to the virus!!!"

You think they're over inflated?

The official number is when someone dies and they are positive for CovId19..

Yes some of them have other illnesses that more than likely would have killed them one day...these are dying sooner..

But there are also people dying due to CovId19 that without CovId19 would have been treatable for their underlying health issues....

And people dying because there is no cure..and they didn't have another illness..

Some might say it's only a small percentage..of the population..others that it's no worse then Flu..but CoVid19 deaths are..on top of these.. there is no medical way to not catch it..

Could lockdown have been tighter.. probably.. would we have accepted that..as a whole probably not..

I think they’re inflated figures yes.... this speculation that there are 1000’s dying at home which aren’t in the figures .... are these the ones who just fall over dead from the virus? If these people are in care homes or at home and are seriously ill why weren’t they moved to hospital? Or ...have people died like they always have and it appears more threatening to increase the figures ??

20319 hospital deaths - such a disingenuous figure - others don't matter I suppose. Keeps the numbers down though and CV19 alleviates the social care problem. The elderly really are such a huge problem aren't they !!

Why aren't they moving people to hospital...well..you are talking about people in care home...these are people with Alzheimer's and dementia..the change in location..to a ward of PPEd up nurses.. do not think that they (the actual NHS staff) know that this will be far more stressful and cause more issues...

Not surprisingly it is now predicted that more people will die from cancer than from COVID because many Trusts are refusing them the treatment that they deserve - odd that you can choose to let people die to save people from dying . . .

If there was a 'will' to treat people with cancer they could find it.

Personally I think it’s despicable putting a number on what a ‘good outcome’ would be. These are not people in a war with expected fatalities. These deaths could’ve been prevented with an earlier lockdown, more testing and more PPE.

Not only are there deaths directly from Covid-19, people have committed suicide, died from lack of treatment for existing conditions and died from not seeking medical help when they should have.

Barack Obama stated 5 years ago that we needed to prepare for a pandemic but we still have leaders who put money before lives.

This is one league table we don’t want to be at the top of.

Each year in the UK, around 40,000 deaths are attributable to exposure to outdoor air pollution.

Source: Royal College of Physicians.

Not a single media outlet posting those cumulative death figures or indeed a single vehicle placed in lock-down in our towns or cities.

Are they lesser deaths?

And if this years normal flu is similar then the number of deaths for covid will be on top of what that figure is..

Because we have this pandemic now it does it mean we will get a free pass for whatever the normal seasonal flu is..

No one here dies from a lack of clean water so that will still go on in certain parts of the globe too..

There have been studies etc and some steps in certain cities to try and cut pollution, some will say its just to raise funds but its not like the figures you've highlighted have never been addressed nationally or globally to an extent..

This whole comparison thing with other ways we leave this mortal coil is a bit bizarre, should a government have said we are going to carry on as normal and allow this pandemic to run amok because there are lots of other ways people die it would be grossly negligent..

Let alone the impact upon the NHS..

Bad news sells ...the media are loving this !

What on earth are they going to write or talk about when this is over !

Yes it's a terrible situation but they're now lumping most deaths down as Covid 19.

I do believe the figures are inflated. They have actually stated that over 90% of the dead had underlying health issues. How many of these people would have passed away this year due to their illnesses or conditions.... we'll never know !

Yes it's a shame the social media pandemic experts can't grasp the basic concept of deaths per 100000 pop when making stupid comparisons

Just watching Prof Chris Fraser (Oxford University "expert" on epidemiology) on Andrew Marr. He reckons between 3-10% of population of UK have had/have virus. Mid estimate is, therefore, about 4 000 000 people.

If we double hospital registered deaths and assume 40 000 deaths then the mortality rate comes to about 1%.

All of these are estimates....based on the data modelling we currently have. But it is in the middle ground of WHO figures for current mortality rates.

To be fair Sweden's poulation is just over 10 Million and there population is not very dense outside few main cities.

If we compare Sweden to other Scandinavian Countries like their Norwegian neighbours (who took much stricter stance) they have more % cases and higher % death rate even allowing for the population size differences.

It is hard to read too much into things at moment but i suspect if we had taken the Swedish approach we would be in much worse position and the media /press would have crucified the PM and FM's of other Nations that make up UK.
