Daily meeting Medical Officer says some restrictions will be necessary for the rest of the year. It's good that the public are finally getting to be told very clearly that restrictions aren't completely going away in 2 or 3 weeks

This announcement came from Professor Whitty, the government chief medical advisor, at the daily briefing

I wonder how many people think it will all be 'back to normal' when lockdown ends. Probably lots.

Here is a rather appropriate analogy.

.

The curve is flattening, we can start lifting restrictions now,.

this is the equivalent of saying.....

.

The parachute has slowed our rate of decent, we can take it off now

I thought it was fairly obvious this wasn't going away any time soon tbh. Write 2020 off folks.

It will very slowly be lifted. And in no way will life go back to “ normal” it will take a couple of years to recover from this. I can’t see pubs or restaurants opening before Xmas.

I didn't see the daily briefing today. It's all very well saying that some restrictions will have to stay in place but people want detail. I'm assuming he meant big groups of people gathering ie pubs. Not good for that industry

I think most people realise that we wont just go back to the old normal. But equally its unlikely that in december we will be living under the same restrictions we are now. There will be gradual reductions and re-introductions of restrictions for some time. It's pretty obvious as that is what is starting to happen in Europe

Not good for Swingers Clubs either as they will be in the same category as pubs.

I meant like immediately. If people join up in groups it will spread again.

Although I don't believe there will be a cure so we will have to live with it.

Ahh the magic word

AFTER

it's just that DURING could last quite a while

In my opinion the time period of during is inversely proportional to rate of infection which is controlled by social freedoms

Ie more severe lock down the less strain on NHS for greater time period

Hand washing had also seen a reduction in other seasonal infections.. so that is good.

I'd like to see places open but like cinemas. They could have a row inbetween people and 2 Seats each side of people. ( which is what they were doing before the closures)

As the virus isnt going away. We need to Learn to live with it. Like we have with many other things.

I find him insufferable to listen to. Did he say anything more specific than that? As in which restrictions, some of them I don't really give a shit about like spacing in supermarkets. But if he thinks we aren't meeting in any size group for 2020 then he should read a book on behavioural science "

Not really. He's been rather similar to the government ministers. Light on detail. I'd prefer the public to know something, so at least this lifts the lid on what the public can expect to happen. There are some people who think we'll only have this for a few more days and then the crisis is over.

Maybe he doesn't believe mass testing serves any purpose, in that I agree with him, I fail to see the point of testing someone when two minutes later they could contract it. It's a bit different for nhs staff but it would appear the test or the testing method isnt that accurate

I’m not sure what more detail you want a medic to give you?. It’s not as though there’s any absolutes on this or a script.

I’m not sure how you get to chief medical officer without being remotely good at your job but I still

think I’d rather listen to an epidemiologist who’s worked on the Ebola outbreak than a ‘tool’ from a swingers site.

Probability is the answer. The probability that you caught it since your last test is lower than the probability you ever caught it. Probability is what gets R1. He's wrong about testing, it's worked in germany, South Korea and singapore. Vietnam didn't test massively but achieved the same principle with aggressive contact tracing. We've failed to take advantage of either of those and that's why we're the 4th worst country in the world at this.

No you wouldn't. You pick the epidemiologist that suits your own bias. Johan Giesecke is far better than Chris Whitty and totally contradicts him. If you don't know how people get in high positions whilst being incompetent then it just shows you don't really understand how large organisations function.

I’m no fan of the way the government have conducted the response to Covid 19 but this desire for a simple answer to what’s going to happen is ridiculously naive.

It is a constantly changing situation with massive amounts of variables and to expect any sort of certainty from scientists is foolish, for once the government isn’t making a complete arse of it just to appeal to the populists.

One of the interesting phrases I hear is "when will it be over".... it won't be "over" in the usual sense.... just an acceptance that some people who haven't caught it will get ill and some might die...

Lives will be lost either way. You cannot keep the country afloat while under lockdown for prolonged periods. Someone eventually will have to make a decision.

There’s every chance that people will get out of the current tight restrictions but not to the level of pubs and restaurants reopening. Things are not getting back to normal any time soon, it’s that simple but that does not mean that people won’t be able to socialise more, that some shops etc. won’t be able to open.

There can’t be any certainty unfortunately, there is no simple answer, no silver bullet, things are going to be different for a long time, just hopefully not as restrictive as things are now.

My grandma died two weeks ago and I would give anything for the opportunity to hug her again one day, including waiting until it’s much safer than it is now.

What I want is immaterial in that situation because I’m not so selfish as to put my desire to hug over someone else’s life.

I agree but but I do think this will be the first thing lifted. And I will send my kids in. I’m sure there will be measures in place and not just “ schools open”. My sons in year 10 and missed half of his year which is crucial for his year 11 GCSEs. I am in contact with governors and hoping for extra study time etc.

that seems to have been the first thing other places have done ... and other none essential shops.

I'm feeling honestly very lost. I'm deliberately keeping myself very busy to try to not give myself time to miss things. But I'm a lifestyle swinger... as in I chose to swing in place of a relationship.. so I'm suddenly left with a huge gap a bit like having your partner ripped away... now that alone I could cope with.. but my other hobbies have all been stopped too. Even my normal work has stopped. Now mentally I'm quite resilient... but if I'm struggling at this.. I hate to think what those without my attitude will be like...

I keep counting myself as lucky as I'm locked down in a very full and busy house. And I'm volunteering for local area.. nhs and several charity help lines. ( not saintly in anyway as it's all to help me as much as it helps others)

But the prospect of social distancing for months more...well its had me crying today

"I don't think they will be able to keep pubs, clubs and other social places shut all year, think of the jobs that would be lost.

But is it worth the lives lost as a result ?

Lives will be lost either way. You cannot keep the country afloat while under lockdown for prolonged periods. Someone eventually will have to make a decision.

Think of it this way, if you have parents or grandparents which ones are you willing to risk the lives of in order for the pubs to open? its not that black and white though.. people are going to start to die through the lockdown as opposed to the virus. We can't stay shut down forever and even 6 months would cripple the country and I'm not talking just financially

I agree. It’s a grey area. I do think the first thing that will be lifted and should be is the kids going back to school. "

What's the point of going to school if there's no jobs going after it?

I'd still wait and see. You cant do that on a bus or train either but can still use them currently. And if other countries are allowing tourists then I'd imagine people will be able to go.

My daughter is desperate to get back to school but with 30 in a class I don't see how they can possibly keep them safe. Not to mention the teachers! "

Children don’t appear to get it and aren’t found to be carriers so the risk isn’t the children but adult to adult contact.

I think schools will go back first but it would surely have to be phased. You can’t have all the parents turning up at the door at primary schools. I’m not sure how staff would distance either. Time will tell.

Exactly as I said above. It won’t be “ oh schools back” teachers will be tested and it will be strictly watched.

We have to remember that Whitty is a fool.

He was supposed to be an expert but contracted coronavirus.

He seems to be flying in the face of all evidence that shows testing and contract tracing allows society to function.

It's a success in South Korea where their economy continues to grow, with shops, cafes and bars open.

Eventually even the Tory government will realise this is the way to go.

Spending vast amounts on testing will be cheaper than paying millions of salaries and dealing with the mess of a collapsed economy.

Well lock down was too late

You have to stay in unless you need to go out

You must stay at home unless you need to visit someone

You can't go to work unless you have to and can't work from home.

You must reuse single use PPE..

I keep saying it. It is a fine balancing act of social / economic effects. I'm pleased I don't have to make the decisions but things will need to be relaxed otherwise lockdown could cause more deaths and damage than Covid.

I can see also see social distancing becoming part of life to varying degrees over the next couple of years.

All industries are going to have to find ways to adapt.

Well it is a fact according to microbiologist Jorn Klein, but I'm sure you know better. About 3,371 under 18s in italy have coronavirus so your theory is that they get it but they can't spread it? How exactly to does that work from a scientific perspective?

'although the majority of younger people and children will develop symptoms little worse than flu, they could be invisible carriers of the virus – and play a key role in its spread'.

they can be. Same as adults but the majority of children seem to be getting it very mildly. Due to lack or information from china when this began... it was thought at the beginning that children didnt seem to be catching it or spreading it... sadly when the virus reached Italy and our own shores we realised that it wasnt the case.

I keep having posts taken down off Facebook, obviously I’m pissing people off with facts !

The Chancellor’s Furlough scheme up until the end of June will cost around £60 billion, if you think we spend £115 billion per annum on the NHS you can see the scale of debt the country will rack up.

The government is in disarray which is why Boris has disappeared as he’s clueless as what to do.

Hancock, Rabb, Gove and others believe the scientists and want to lock the country down until a vaccine is ready to save lives.

A vaccine might be 12 months away at least, if one actually proves to work, by that time thousands of businesses will never recover and we could have at least 10 million unemployed.

There’s loads who post night after night on here, saying the journalists are stupid asking the same questions about when the lockdown will be lifted, don’t they know people are dying !

Yes, they know people are dying, but they also know the government has got themselves in shit they can’t seem to get out off.

This virus has been portrayed as the Black Death, but 80% of people that get it have symptoms of a mild cold at worse and 91% of people that died from Covid19 had three or more pre-existing conditions.

The country is on the brink of a financial meltdown worse than the Great Depression, journalists can see it, we can see it but the government will destroy our way of life just to prove a point of keeping the R infection rate of less than 1.

The worse thing that the government had, was the massive majority that they gained at the last election, they been able to get us into this position with no opposition !

This is really scary because the nightly ‘sermon on the mount’ as well the word lockdown being used on every BBC radio station show every few minutes is like something out of 1984 !

I actually cannot believe I am living through something I studied as a book in school back in the 1980’s !

what theory. My statement was based on factual evidence which is very clear to see if you look at the figures etc... children can catch and spread it... but luckily those that are are mostly getting it mildly.

Due to lack or information from china when this began... it was thought at the beginning that children didnt seem to be catching it or spreading it... sadly when the virus reached Italy and our own shores we realised that it wasnt the case.

And that proves your theory how ?

Do you actually think that children can't be carriers and therefore spread the virus?

No not at all. I didn’t once say that. All I said was I think schools will open first. Which I think they should. "

Oh....sorry I thought you questioned someone when they said children were carriers....

It’s comments like yours that annoy me. You say children carry it and spread it like it’s FACT,, no it’s not so why say it

Yes I know. But seriously as a country do you suggest bars? Pubs ? Restaurants, open before schools? Our children’s education, future leaders! Politicians! Drs! Solicitors etc.

And that proves your theory how ? what theory. My statement was based on factual evidence which is very clear to see if you look at the figures etc... children can catch and spread it... but luckily those that are are mostly getting it mildly. "

My daughter is desperate to get back to school but with 30 in a class I don't see how they can possibly keep them safe. Not to mention the teachers!

Children are carriers and they do spread it.

Yes children are carriers like everyone else. Do you have proof they are more of a carrier than an adult ?

It's not nice but don't hold much hope in a vaccine, so have to run it's course. We can't keep in lockdown for ever. More will be dying because of lockdown soon, NHS already missing 500 appointment a day how many will die?

If the government, including medical advisers, became clearer about their plan, including any admission about the lack of one, how full or empty it may be, it would probably be better for the country. There's of course uncertainty in the population, not knowing if we have jobs, have infections, may even die. If the government clarifies its position, it helps people to gain more certainty.

People ask what the point of testing is. It helps to create a more precise understanding of the size of the current problem, as well as to track it over time. Those infected can be isolated and their former contacts traced and tested likewise. Those are better measures than just isolation for all and can be with or instead of some public social restrictions. Without testing and strict complete isolation of those infected tested people, we'll likely fail to make inroads in to reducing it towards eradication. With high rates of people lacking symptoms, the asymptomatic, testing has to be essential.

As some note, we're not faring brilliantly amongst countries of the world. This is likely because some of the approaches taken haven't been optimal. It's not to say that there aren't benefits for how things have been, just that it's looking likely that we can adopt some of the elements that have been working elsewhere.

Agree on testing, but in the news conference yesterday they admitted they hadn’t even got a test that works fully yet !

Not talking about out patient, but cancer liver heart people are waiting to be tested. If left to long it will be to late and they will die. But virus numbers will be down so that's ok

"I keep having posts taken down off Facebook, obviously I’m pissing people off with facts !

"

And the rest of the world ?

With a very small number of exceptions ..

Tell the parents of the 5 year old who died from it....and not the only one. While it seems true that children are far less symptomatic there is no scientific evidence I can find that says they cannot be spreaders....children are often super spreaders of many infections.

I do think schools may reopen sooner rather than later....but with great care!

Of course there is always the exception to the rule, I saw a report on my news feed that the french dont now believe kids do spread it much. It might be that their immune systems deals with it quicker than us oldies

I've not seen the report but children tend to behave differently than adults do. They may be infectious for less time but their behaviour may still predispose them to infect as many as adults do. Social distancing in schools can do so much but they are still learning about life and aren't as controlled as we are, as their brains haven't matured to the same level.
