see what u think to this.fact uv light or sun lamps as most of us know them kill airborn and virus on skin and clothes .fact one stage of decon when entering virus labs is to go under uv lamps . fact some of the food industry pass food under uv lamps to kil bacteria .so wud it be a good idea to have uv lamps at the entrance to every hospital or doctors or bus rail air or shiping terminal and so help to decon large numbers in places of public gathering

Uv light kills some types of bacteria. This is a virus so unlikely to much help here.

UV light would damage the skin of the people exposed to it, and potentially contribute to increase cancer risks.

UV light does destroy viruses, but it tends to be used for decontamination of equipment, rooms, or potentially large areas. Most commercial systems seem to use UVC light, which is highly effective, but also dangerous to us. There are some far-UVC products available, but they seem to be very new technology, not readily available, and not large enough to use in public places.

According to the WHO website:

"Can an ultraviolet disinfection lamp kill the new coronavirus?

UV lamps should not be used to sterilize hands or other areas of skin as UV radiation can cause skin irritation."

Which is not quite the same as saying that UV radiation doesn't kill coronavirus. Rather, it suggests that, if you were to decontaminate regularly with a high enough dose to kill coronavirus then you'd end up irritating your skin.

UV light is categorised in 3 bands; UVA, UVB and UVC. UVC wavelength light gets filtered out by the ozone layer in the atmosphere and does not make it to the earths surface. It is this UVC light that will kill off the virus. UVC light can be produced artificially and it is this light that is used for sterilisation purposes. However, it would only take 10 seconds under this light to get severe sunburn compared to a few hours for the UVA or UVB light. UVC light is too dangerous to humans to be used how you describe.

Does this have anything to do with sun and VitD ? I’ve been luckily to use private GP’s for many years and the two bits of advice that several have given me to avoid all kinds of illness is take loads of VitC, ignore RDA, like 500-1000mg per day and the 2nd is every day if possible close your eyes and look at the sun for 30 seconds to get VitD. Maybe it’s nonesense and I’ve just good immunity but other than Malaria I’ve not been ill for years, never had coughs /colds etc

Not sure what benefit looking up at the sun with your eyes closed has. The exposure for vitamin D will be through any exposed skin. Vitamin D is really needed for healthy bones and teeth, so I'm not sure this has anything to do with the virus.

The type of UV required to kill virus (UV-C) WILL do significant damage to human cells too. it can be used to safety sterilise surfaces and equipment, but would effectively cook people.

UV light can indeed destroy the virus causing Covid, however there are some serious problems using it in most settings.

- UV lamps tend to generate ozone, a gas that can be an irritant to the lungs.

- UV damages plastics & some other surfaces, causing discoloration and making them brittle.

- UV damages the eyes, potentially leading to cataracts, retina damage or worse.

- UV damages the skin and increases the risk of skin cancer.

The dosage of UV required to inactivate the sars-cov-2 virus is high enough that these are significant problems. There is also the issue of shadows when using UV to decontaminate large areas - if the light doesn't shine on a surface it won't get disinfected.

So yes, UV has a place in certain specific situations (it's common in air/water filtration for example to help kill viruses & bacteria) but it's not suitable for general disinfection.

Stick to soap & water or a mild bleach solution for that.

"The virus is hear to stay get uv at avery entrance to a building a few seconds wont hutr but will kill any virus you have got . Thats what the germ labs do"

It's about the right type of light frequency, at the right intensity level m, for sufficient duration, to inactivate the virus or other infectious agents. There's no point if it's not adequate to do the job or if it's dangerous to human health.

We can certainly use the technology that we have to effectively kill it, in the appropriate ways

Vit D has been shown to make a massive difference in how severe a case of covid (and other respiratory illnesses) is if you catch it.

They do not decontaminate "people" with UV. The only type of UV radiation that can kill viruses is UV-C and that is seriously harmful to all biological tissue. It is used to decontaminate surfaces & equipment, but not scientists.

Yes, UV-C radiation will absolutely damage and unprotected skin. In doses high enough to kill virus' it would, at best, lead you to experience what amounts to almost instant serious sunburn. It can cause irreparable damage to eyes, cause blistering and skin cancer. When UV-C radiation is used to decontaminate a room, it cannot be occupied at any point in the process. If you have ever been in one of those rooms straight after, one of the most noticeable smells is that of burnt skin as it fries all the dead skin cells that have been shed over time.

It doesn't unless you want cooked internal organs.

On a more point that was around when this was posted we were in a 2 Mtr rule.

I think it is definitely time to bring this back into force...especially for local lockdown. What you think?

Yeah I get you as I try to do the same.

But when we had the 2mtr rule the shops were only allowing a capacity on that basis.

Yesterday I had to nip into tesco for the first time in a good while and how it has changed from a couple of months back...no one at the entrance checking on numbers...no Sanitiser points on the entrance and loads of people inside.

We all managed to shop before...albeit with a little wait...so not every one will agree but with this doubling every week I think now is the time to take this back into account.

Yeah it's not so easy now but I still do the 'shop enough for three weeks' routine so I don't need to do little bits of shopping in between.

Not really noticed any lack of sanitisation facilities, but I habitually have appropriate stuff in the car anyway.

I work on the principle that the only person qualified to protect me, is me.

I take all the care I can...wear masks carry my own Sanitiser and mostly shop once a week late night...yesterdays 3.30pm shop was a exception...but it opened my eyes to how lax we have become.

Yeah I agree. It's depressing tbh.

I'm doing my bit. I'm doing more than my bit. I want us to get back to normal. But I can't take on other people's responsibility to make this go away. Even though I fucking would.

I want this to end. I'm as tired, fed up, angry, lonely, and horny as anyone FFS.

"Uv light kills some types of bacteria. This is a virus so unlikely to much help here."

UV also smashes up RNA particles (virus) but also DNA (bacteria and human skin cells) so not great as leads to skin cancers.

High intensity UV-C is only effective if short time exposure is required such as sterilising trains.

Serious human tissue damage will occur, as Trump says, you could always insert the lamp into the lungs... hmmm
