Just spent ages interviewing a truck driver ‘live from his cab in Calais’ about a lovely old lady waving at trucks from a motorway bridge. Nice but really a non story.
Where is the cutting edge journalism and report on how / why Germany are managing so much better than us? |

That's cutting edge journalism compared to what I just saw: some old boy being presented with a cushion by his nurse. Now there could have been more to the story...but the two minutes i saw made me wonder if there wasn't anything else of importance going on in the world i might worry about. |

Simple...because they MANUFACTURE stuff. Didn't need to rely on imports of PPE, ventilators, testing materials (large chemical/pharma industry). They were on it from the start... |

It's not that they manufacture stuff it's that the Pharma brand who created the test has facilities based in Germany so they have all the materials to test on scale. They have also been lucky (and wise) that they have been able to control this early. Thats pot luck though Pharma brands are based all over the globe. |

I know, a little kind of happy two minute story shouldn't be allowed on the news when there's hardly a stich of reporting on things such as the Corona virus going on |

Light-hearted stories are great. And the BBC make excellent nature and science based documentaries, which they can only do by being funded they way they are.
But they seems to employ a lot of interviewers that ask lots of weak, non-challenging questions. |

Well I guess that all news providers have been either advised to or have chosen not to report whats going on to its full extent so as to play down how bad things are elsewhere and stop people panicking. Also if the newsrooms are operating with minimal staff and the stringers are on lockdown too then maybe reliable sources have dried up? If on the other hand this is just an excuse for another bitchfest about the bbc then I expect all the usual suspects will be crawling out of the woodwork soon! |

Indeed.
As an example the previous Labour leader asked questions submitted by the public to the previous PM.

Personally I find it rather refreshing to see the occasional story like the ones today as opposed to all the 'doom and gloom' normally reported. Yes said doom and gloom is important I know, and some of it, speculative in the main in the forums, needs to be reported, but in saying that I don't need it rammed down my throat 24/7 |

Many people will get overloaded and not want non-stop covid-19 news - similarly to most forum users spending all their time in this Virus section. They are a public service broadcaster with responsibilities that include local news and probably strive to balance what is for many a worrying and depressing time. If I was elderly and isolated, possibly in a care home, light features of more heartwarming news would be an incredibly welcome relief from concerns that my friends, carers or myself may not have long before we're infected or dead, for example.
They have a broad spectrum of the public that they serve, unlike a commercial subscription channel that has a focus on $.
It's clear that they don't have to be everything to everybody as we have lots of choice available. Their output is streets ahead of the dross that you'll typically face in a market such as the USA, including provision of good radio. |

But worth noting that the BBC have an income of £3.8 Billion a year in license fee and Government contribution.
With a total of £5.3 Billion for the year 2017-2018.
So no real need to chase thge proverbial 'mighty dollar' of the private companies.

The BBC is essentially neutered. Nobody is allowed to express any real opinions which unfortunately has made watching it a dull and anodyne experience. I'd rather watch paint dry
However their natural history programming is world class |

i think this is where having a go at the news dept is an easy whip to have a go at the entire corporation...
for example... BBC local radio is brilliant at this time because it helping with stuff like volunteering and organisation,
BBC childrens dept and especially the education dept have gone into overdrive producing programming to help with stay at home and the national curriculum...
the BBC website.. yes i bet you all read it
BBC entertainment have produced a lot more podcasts all over the shop on a lot of different subjects...
and the iplayer... where programs are normally only allowed to be on the for 30 days, have brought back a whole shed load of programming to the service so people can basically watch brilliant comedy and drama....

There is always room for a personal interest story.
How many ways can you keep putting out the same stories about deaths, ppe, testing and ventilators?
I turn broadcast news off after 2 days of repeat stories, we are now in week 5 and only the numbers change the science and the stories have barely moved on.
Good one about plasma treatment a day or 2 ago but not much else.
That goes for all news including fox news lite (sky news) |

Really? What particular version of good old aunty beeb have you been watching?
Seems to me that the bbc is caught between a rock and a hard place.
So many people on here moaning about how much they have to pay for it yet as _abio explained admirably, it provides a much larger and more wide ranging service with high local content particularly in radio. Compared to sky it is relatively cheap and although it is struggling with being priced out of the game (sports in particular) by sky, bt, amazon etc it is still one of the finest broadcasters in the world. The idea behind the bbc is that it provides a universal service for a relatively low price (a bit like the nhs) and it strikes me that most people get that but the libertarians amongst you seem to feel you are cheated by having to pay for it you tight lot |

I don't always like their news reporting as editorially they have started employing a lot of right wing journalists in senior positions of late. I don't watch their children's programmes as I'm not a child and there aren't any in the house but I appreciate that there are millions who do.
I don't enjoy all of their dramas but there are some which are excellent. I only listen to a couple of their radio stations but I understand that there are lots of different tastes out there. Again, some of their documentaries aren't to my taste but a lot of them are, same with quiz shows and comedy.
I think to appreciate the BBC all you really need to understand is that not every fucking thing is about you. |

There’s a lot that I like and admire about the BBC. The editorial side of things is increasingly difficult but that applies to much of the media.
I wonder if politicians have become more cautious and savvy. They certainly haven’t forgotten how they were exposed a decade back on expenses. Both sides by the way. The incredible sense of entitlement at the time was beyond belief and they probably still feel they didn’t do anything wrong. Perhaps we just have too many - why do we need 650 MP’s ? |

But that isn't real is it? Everyone does own a TV or have access to the internet with a laptop or Mobile phone. So all the people who do not want to pay for a TV License should get rid of their TV's and Phones and Laptops?
And watch any pay service how?
You don't need a TV licence to watch stuff on your phone, laptop or on your computer screen. Unless you want to watch BBC iPlayer.
You're free to watch your pay service on any of those devices.
If your device is capable of watching any live broadcast TV you have to pay for a license."
You are kind of both right and both wrong on technicality
You can own a device (including a tv) but if you do not watch or recordd any live tv or use iplayer then can declare so and opt out of the license
For example i can have a tv for netflix no problem
However even if i don’t have a tv but i have a now tv subscription used on my phone to watch sky one live , then i would be liable for tv license
I think its correct that you dont really have the choice ... its pretty much pay for bbc or be restricted from live use of any provider |

Nothing really daring or innovative, although it wasn't always like that
I actually think it all went tits up after the Ross/Brand debacle and by trying to please everyone they're in danger of pleasing no one
They have some great stuff on bbc3..fleabag,this country, dectectorists eyc"
Sounds more like my kind of thing and the Detectorists does come highly recommended |

When it comes to general programming the BBC still comes up with a few gems - I’m thinking Race Across The World most recently. It does frustrate me how they find something that seems to work then exploit it in every way possible - I’m thinking the number of antique / auction shows here.
With regard to news - those leaning left see them as biased to the right and those to the right see them leaning to the right. The reality is they are probably somewhere in the middle...which is exactly where they should be as a National broadcaster.
Personally I have 2 main criticisms when it comes to news - the obsession to have someone reporting from whatever they’re talking about and the need for reporters to put their own spin on their stories.
All too often these reports are nothing but conjecture and personal opinion. Some editors need to realise the news is the story - not them. |

If you want news it’s a waste of time watching the BBC.
These days CNN, Al Jazeera, even Sky provides better more informed Journalism.
The BBC is no better than Fox when it comes to impartial reporting. |

The BBC has a political agenda.
They are Remainers, Climate obsessed, anti Trump and peddle too much propoganda for my tastes. They pay inflated salaries. I tune into match of the day to watch the highlights, not to listen to overpaid presenters.

So why dont you pay to watch the news you want, or better still just accept that your world view is perhaps different from others and you might not be in the majority on this. The bbc charter enshrines impartiality in its reporting of the news - if you would rather news was bland or unquestioning of government there are plenty of other places you can go - russia today, fox news, the peoples daily of north korea |

"These were the clowns paying their male presenters far more than women presenters..
And they preach equal opportunity .. hypocrisy"
So you're looking for a news station which is:
Pro-Brexit
Anti-environment
Pro-Trump
Pro-feminist
Good luck with that.

The logic being presented is that if we listen to Alex Jones and then David Icke that somehow the truth will be in between what they said. No, they both talk utter shit and there's very little to be gained by listening to either of them. If one person says it's raining, you don't need to invite another person on who thinks it isn't raining. It's either fucking raining or it's not. |

At first I thought that you were referring to men of colour not living up to expectations.
But, I do agree with your point.
When I was younger journalists used to investigate the issues behind a story. Nowadays journalists are merely required to bleat in tune with popular sentiment.

Yep. Thats why they call it a newspaper review. If the guy hung around he would have seen him interviewing a professor from oxford who is working on the tracing app. He would have seen him interview a German politician, the Swedish Deputy Prime Minister, The Scottish First minister oh and the Foriegn Secretary.

for example...

So you think a media business with offices and studios all over the country (and world) shouldn’t spend money on keeping up with their competitors? How much do you think the big investment firms and banks based in the city or docklands spend on taxis? Muppetry and whataboutery of the first order being spouted here by prople who have no knowledge of how the bbc works. |

"So you think a media business with offices and studios all over the country (and world) shouldn’t spend money on keeping up with their competitors? How much do you think the big investment firms and banks based in the city or docklands spend on taxis? Muppetry and whataboutery of the first order being spouted here by prople who have no knowledge of how the bbc works.
A lot of jobs have perks (look at the big fuck off bonuses some people get)
Yet a free newspaper is a scandal?
Exactly - complete lunacy being spouted in here for a change lol. Even my dentist has free daily newspapers, so to say that a media company like the bbc should not is frankly pathetic
Easy stick to beat it with though isnt it?
It's a good job the gmnt dont waste any money."
Hmmm....where’s Chris Grayling when you need to catch a ferry eh? |

Have you ever worked for the bbc or any other media company? Do you know how they operate on a day to day basis? Do you think that many other big companies spend money on newspapers and magazines? Do the bbc also have successful magazine publishing? Do you understand that the media is constantly looking at itself and the world around it. Do you understand that the bbc produces, film, television, radio, websites, magazines, etc. Do you see that you might be a bit out of your comfort zone when it comes to understanding their business? |

We currently have freedom of choice with the TV licence.
How do we have freedom of choice with the TV license?
Well, it's not compulsory to own a TV. If you don't own a TV, you don't have to pay for a licence.
Well, it's not compulsory to own a TV. If you don't own a TV, you don't have to pay for a licence. "
TV Licensing have for years tried to trick people. The act simply states you need a licence if you have equipment configured to receive tv signals. You don’t have to even let them in to check , they have to prove you broke the law. You can own and configure a tv so it’s not capable of receiving tv signals I.e pull the Airel lead out |

Don’t know if it’s still the case but most of the licence fee used to be spent on R4 & BBC2 etc as the better quality programmes cost so much more to make. |

"Any correlation between those who would get rid of the Been and those who would break up the NHS??"
Not here. The NHS needs a few more nurses and a few less managers but it should be protected.
The BBC though should go advertising/subscription. Most of us pay for subscription services anyway and it should be factored into those. If you want it you pay. |

Was that the 'old boy'with dementia who cuddles a picture of his dead wife, so the health care support worker got a cushion with his wife's face on it. The joy on his face was the story. Nice to see a feel good story at this time. I saw it. For that 'old boy' it was important, and maybe helps other families with dementia sufferers, which is also important. |

MAJORITY in this case was 37% of the population.
I'm not a mathematician but I'm fairly sure that 63 37.
I really hope you're right and it turns out ok but I've seen no evidence in the last 4 years to support that.
Anyway, back on topic - The BBC has really good content in several areas but making people pay for it who don't use it is wrong.

Please tell me that you are joking.. no its on their wedsite under costs 2018/2019 along with £600,000 for employees taxis . You couldn't make it up what a gray train.
Bit of a misleading story this..The guardian is the most ordered paper from the bbc.Other papers are bought but the guardian is the most popular."
Speaking of newspapers; the licence fee costs less than 43p a day - if you pay it at all. That's cheaper than all but four of the UK's newspapers - and some of them, you only get on a Sunday.
Clearly, given the range of world, UK and local content the BBC provides on television, radio and online - it is better value for money than any newspaper - and I'm sure the owners of The Sun and The Daily Mail are grateful for the BBC's business.
The BBC's output and spending are regulated and scrutinised to a far stricter level than any newspaper, too.
If you really hate the BBC because it doesn't reflect your political views and/or it's wasting money you're having to pay as a tax; then tough fucking shit!
Find something that's really worth complaining about - like why your government, despite having detailed plans for dealing with a pandemic, failed to implement them due to the financial cost of being prepared. |

Halfing the price of the product would maybe get you a dacia because its cheap and cheerful but then then you wonder why everyone starts moaning because they wanted a VW golf gti for the same money? Pay half price and you get a worse experience. Its a silly idea you are pushing and you know it. |

You will never convince the rabid Brexiteers. All we can do now is club together and try and get through the shambles it will be. That's why they have to pretend the government has dealt with Covid well. If this is a pre cursor to how Brexit will go, god help us. |

Yes but that 37% was of 80% that were eligible to vote. Those that didn’t vote can’t really complain either way. BTW I voted remain but accept the democratic result of the referendum |

Correct, however , is it fair to say whatever happens with Brexit (wether it be good, bad or indifferent ) will effect 100% of the population, of which only 37% voted for it . |
