Lockdown Until Vaccine Available

A scientist advising the government, Prof Fergus on has today told BBC Radio 4 that we will have to maintain a significant level of social distancing indefinitely until we have a vaccine available.
How do we all feel about this?
How long do we think a safe (and tested) vaccine could be made available to the public? |

Not that enamoured but much of what he says but no one can argue with these comments. It's really simple - until a vaccine, we will have many of the restrictions now in place. Add to that the length of time required to vaccine a large proportion of the population and it's impossible not to see social distancing(at least for most of us sensible ones) being a way of life for the next 2-3 years |

"BoJo and Cummings ignored scientific advice at the onset and they continue to do so which means this will be ignored as well" they didnt ignore.. there were conflicting reports as there are now. They have to decide what's best for the country. I certainly wouldn't like to have to make that decision. And its not as simple as let's all stay locked down till we can cure or vaccinate unfortunately

Same here, counting from a couple of months ago. And that would be pretty fast - apparently vaccines usually take in the order of a decade for new diseases. Of course we don't usually put this much effort into finding one.
A ray of hope though. It was widely reported (my search showed articles in the times, sky news, mirror, telegraph, guardian, metro, independent and more off the bottom of the page) that a team in Oxford has made quicker than expected progress. They seemed to reckon they had an 80% chance of success on a vaccine that would be ready in September.
Meanwhile we can reduce restrictions before then if we have access to:
* Ubiquitous testing, to find and isolate those with the disease (this is the most effective way to eliminate it).
* Serological testing, to find out who is immune so they can get on with doing stuff.
* Therapeutic treatments. These don't stop you getting covid 19 but they would reduce the severity of it or the length of time you have it, or both. If an existing drug can be re-purposed for this it's likely we could have it much sooner. |

"Increasing your immunity by increasing vitamin D and C. Stop drinking and smoking can save your life too. Just be sensible and safe. " being out and about and happy also helps your immune system. |

'16 hours ago - Coronavirus: Oxford University to begin human trials of Covid-19 vaccine next week. More than 500 people enrol to test jab following trials
There is now hope that the jab, developed by the clinical teams at the Jenner Institute and Oxford Vaccine Group, could be ready from as early as September.'

I saw this on the BBC when they asked for test subjects a week ago. I live just outside the catchment so was unable to help.
Problem is not so much the making of the vaccine it’s the period in which it needs to be evaluated to see if it works. |

The date of when a vaccine is available is a known unknown...lets hope it's at the lower end of estimates.
However, unless and until it does become available social distancing rules of some sort WILL need to be maintained. Think that much has been obvious for some time. The R number has to be kept under 1.0. Current "expert" estimate is around 0.6. |

Correct. Even if miraculously it 'works' , we won't know over how long a period until at least the 18 month stage |

Sounds eminently sensible to me.
I see that a Japanese city managed to isolate and got cases down to a handful a week.
They opened the doors and it's back - so back into isolation. |

The typical vaccine time frame may be beaten, due to the urgency and potential huge income potential from it.
It will likely be patented and the world will be held to ransom. The UK may not be early in the queue to get it of course.
We're all assuming that we will have the easy access route to it. |

It depends which country brings the most viable vaccine to market (the uk is not the only one trying to establish a vaccine) and said vaccine establishing a patent. Manufacturing will take months. Once available it can be administered fairly quickly via drop in clinics |
