Is Nadine Dorries right?

Nadine Dorries, the health minister, last night said that the UK will be in lockdown until a vaccine is made, which could be as long as 18 months. Until then, she says, “we need to find ways we can to adapt society and strike a balance between the health of the nation and the economy”.

It certainly looks like once restrictions get to be lifted nothing will change and life will not be the same until a vaccine is found. Indeed a 2nd wave will become a real risk after a partial lifting of restrictions. What she is saying is that social distancing will become a way of life until the vaccine. Those people on here who think clubs and meets will suddenly be like they used to be is either very deluded or refreshingly optimistic and if it’s the latter where do they think this virus is going to?

It's very dangerous speak, the lasting effects will go on for a long time e.g. mass gatherings, travel. But I cannot believe we will be in the current state of 'lockdown' for more than a few more weeks.

Personally, I think there will be a partial lift of restrictions but when this happens there will be a surge in new cases, this is based on predictions from respected virologists. It is what happens with things like this, and things won't go back to normal as quickly as a lot of people think it will. Anyone who thinks it will is living in cloud cockoo land...

In terms of public health it will be about balance.

Which will cause greater harm to the population.

Lockdown keeps us safe from covid but increases other risks, mental health, obesity, lack of attending for other health care.

We have a services based economy. Keep pubs and restaurants closed for 18 months and the financial fallout will devastate a generation. Everything will be open by August

@Lord Flashheart I agree with you , life wont be the same again and I do think that now people are doing work from home , big projects wont be needed like hs2 because if work can be done from home there is no need to travel with a posh briefcase to a posh office , pump the money back in to the UK

i think some things will change... for example

resturants will have less capacity in them to increase spacing....

menus will be paper so they are used once.....

limits on venues like shopping centres,

on trains a planes two seats may become 1, or you will not be able to book single seats together!

and say goodbye to the middle seats on airplanes for the time being (actually maybe thats a good thing!

the last time to come back are going to be be the mass events.... which why i honestly thing you can say goodbye to concerts and sporting venues with crowds, for a while!

I would say clubs will be the last thing to have restrictions lifted...social distancing will be here for a year or two...and what would be the point of a club with that...

The big issue is no one knows because the majority of people show little or no symptoms from the virus. So it's a total unknown figure for how many have had it and got some if not total immunity. If the figures lower then phased release with measures will happen if its higher then more relaxed if any control measures will be allowed. There will be regions that will have spikes in cases as they've had little or no exposure. It's purely guess work until either a safe vaccination is developed, the economy forces countries out of lockdown, or immunity is built. We have to remember covid 19 is from the same family of virus's as the common cold (not the flu) so chances are it could mutate. But possibly the fact the majority have some immunity thus no or few symptoms the scientists just dont know..or arent saying..

People will still want to meet for love and companionship..even those with dirty minds. The Spanish flu and aids didn't stop our carnal nature. And people will still want to go to the pub ...and work in them

good question....

I think like restaurants you are looking at "reduced capacity" at best..... i still think you are going to be looking at mass gathering limits of 50-100 at best.... so at least people can do celebrations such as weddings for example.....

They been doing more testing in Italy and they still so far away from herd immunity. Something like 40% and such a high death toll... I rather wait for a vaccine than try to allow upto 30% of our population to perish because of Covid-19

Totally agree - I don't see clubs reopening until a vaccine is made and widely distributed( this will take at least a year to vaccinate even 25% of the population). In fact , I will be surprised to see any club reopen in the next 2-3 years

Absolute nonsense, do you seriously think the Government will subsidise clubs/pubs/restaurants and workers for 1-2 years? The Government does not have those funds. The rest of the funding at the moment for companies are all loans (what a con).

I think air travel will be about pre flight health screenings like they have started in the Emirates. There will be an element of risk.

Life's risky at the best of times.

You can stay in forever and still have a domestic accident.

Look back at the Spanish flu epidemic, the virus mutated and fell away.

Things will be somewhat different for a while but an 18-month lockdown won't happen.

You seem to be extremely preoccupied about clubs being shut for the next 2-3 years. You’ve made several threads about this. Any particular reason?

It will not be sustainable to keep the world as it is for 18 months or so. I for one hope it doesn’t and that things are more “normal” by the summer. I work in aviation and seeing so much suffering of families I am friends with in this industry is devastating.

If you’re not comfortable with clubs, don’t go. Pandemic or no pandemic. Simples!

That’s true but it’s got to circulate to the filters first. So it will spend enough time hanging around.

Planes and other enclosed space type transport systems make a mockery of the 2 metre rule for one simple reason, viral load.

Anyone who is infected, especially the unaware " super spreaders " who show no symptoms, are shedding the virus continually, and the viral load ( the amount of virus in the air ) is getting more and more concentrated.

Therefore, being in a confined space with them for potentially hours at a time will massively increase the risk of everyone catching it that is confined with them.

I reckon mass transport will suffer the most, and things like "one person only" habits in lifts etc will be around for a long time.

Central

Testing, contact tracing and isolation are needed to further suppress the infection rate more effectively.

The WHO emphasised testing, testing, testing at the start of this but the UK decided it wasn't important enough.

Likewise, we had a network already established and working, of contact tracing staff around the country but government disbanded them.

We should be cautious and remain more isolated but having an emphasis upon testing and tracing contacts of infected people, with isolation and good health service ongoing support and care would be huge containment measures. We have many people now dieing at home, after infection because they are not helped, which is a scandal.

Travel all depends on whether you have had the virus or not. If I'd had it I would travel tomorrow, if allowed

It would be good to understand where we are with the antibody test kits and whether they will be on open sale

since you bought up aviation lets use that....

if you think we are going back to 100% capacity on planes then i think you are kidding yourself! the old "normal" isn't going to be the new normal!

with social distancing rules... i can absolute see 100 capacity place becoming more like 40-50% capacity at best....its going to be about limiting social interactions against trying to get some sort of economy going....

I can see 100 capacity swinging venues for example being slashed in half....

same for pubs.... same for resturants.....

places like mcdonalds greggs starbucks for example will become takeout only....

Simples!

since you bought up aviation lets use that....

if you think we are going back to 100% capacity on planes then i think you are kidding yourself! the old "normal" isn't going to be the new normal!

with social distancing rules... i can absolute see 100 capacity place becoming more like 40-50% capacity at best....its going to be about limiting social interactions against trying to get some sort of economy going....

I can see 100 capacity swinging venues for example being slashed in half....

same for pubs.... same for resturants.....

places like mcdonalds greggs starbucks for example will become takeout only...."

I cannot see the logic in slashing the capacity of slashing the capacity of a swinging club due to the nature of the activity. Unless it’s going to be all about socials and glory holes.

Easyjet have just announced the middle seats will be left empty. Fares will consequently rise by 50% assuming anybody is allowed to fly.

Absolutely. You have to be pretty deluded to think that things will be back to 'normal' by the summer. If only! Not sure where these people think the virus is going

We can't see total swinging freedom returning soon. Meets might be able to take place if one couple can prove that they have had the virus and can't pass it on. Clubs may be able to get test kits and test on the door before admission.

"Nadine Dorries, the health minister, last night said that the UK will be in lockdown until a vaccine is made, which could be as long as 18 months.

"

Frankly I find Nadine Dorries comments extremely demotivating as well as condescending … Whilst the current situation is indeed critical for the national (and global) population, for a large majority there are also issues, circumstances, expectations, desires and hopes that demand real information from UK Gov on their intentions to exit and recover from this lockdown. Personally I accept that at present this may be nothing other than an strategic outline, but no matter a plan is better than nothing or worse dialogue suggesting 18 months of continued distancing. To have a Health Minister focus solely on the 'health' aspects of CV-19 is perhaps understandable, however what is totally unacceptable is to leave that comment unaddressed and without position in a much wider national context. Frankly I am sick of political sound bites, no matter how well intended. What I am seeking is a well thought out and integrated plan for all, one that will help us to look forward and remove all this speculative and opinion based diatribe.

I think there will be a new normal. Unless completely eradicated things are going to evolve. Facemasks in the street were what tourist used to wear in London. Now I see them more and more.

"I don’t think removing the use of the middle seat from a plane is going to actually do much infection control wise.

Not with the aircon...

The plane air con has the same filters as a hospital operating theatre, or so I read. As I was thinking about a long haul flight and was concerned. It removes 99% of nasties

https://www.tripsavvy.com/air-quality-during-your-flight-54164"

But they are wearing FFP3 masks in theatres now...no drinks or food on a 14 hour flight..I'll hangfire. ..

Massive fan of clubs so I hope they survive or new ones open once the new normal is established.

Clubs could reopen very quickly if official immunity passports are issued.

Once good DIY test kits become available (and they will for commercial reasons) on the door testing will be the norm. Maybe tested on every visit or strong ID required every time for saved results.

It's not about the filters, it's about air movement in a confined space. One person coughs circulated air entering the cabin moves the air through the cabin before it enters the filters again.

So one cough or sneeze will infect many if not all rows in a single flight only people who are in a safer position are the pilots. Filters reduce contagions but doesn't eliminate them. Anyone sat near an intake vents for the aircon are at most risk.

"Passports" are not going to happen- they have virtually said that and there certainly is not going to be social 'apartheid ' where someone can enter and another can't just because they may have not had the disease. Add to that the huge uncertainty of reinfection and how long after ' recovery' a person may still I've infectious and it appears we are a long way off clubs reopening and realistically only after a vaccine has been found

30%???

Not sure where that figure was "plucked" from.

The WHO figures, worldwide are just under 2% (still unacceptable IMHO) Even in UK...where we have a massively distorted high proportion due to only (until very recently) testing those entering hospital with severe symptoms it is around 13%. As only 20% show anything like serious symptoms a decent estimate would be under 3%.

What they say one day changes the next. There will be a demand for some sort of official passport. No one even knows how long a vaccine will be effective for, or if it will protect everyone ... Far too much trust put into a vaccine solution. Test, test and retest will move things along. If people who are not immune want to travel, work, shop or swing they will know after testing that they are chancing to luck. Some clubs may not want to risk opening. Some people won't want to swing if not immune, but it is a consenting adult activity.

True. Because air is constantly circulating in an aeroplane.

Imagine the death and destruction caused by the two world wars and how people felt looking at row upon row of bombed flattened homes and factories and a generation of young people dead and buried.

Me too, like fuck am I having the vaccine that got rushed through all the real safety checks. They keep telling us it's a new virus that they know fuck all about. I'm not anti-vax, I've had BCG etc but nothing the government does inspires any confidence in me. 18 month lockdown is a joke:

1. They can't afford it

2. People won't do it

Not necessarily right. The Spanish flu was eradicated due to death or survival and the virus just died out. We are alot more advanced since then but was not as connected globally.

A vaccine is not guaranteed. They may never find one.

The Spanish flu killed approx 50 million people before it 'died ' out - that accounted for 1% of the world population. So if no vaccine is found , we are looking at nearly 60 million dead - is that the answer ?
