Here’s a startling statistic. Around 35% of critically-ill Coronavirus patients in Britain are of ethnic-minority background, even though they comprise just 14% of the population |

"I just heard on the news that a third of people critaly ill are from ethnic minority backgrounds and it is getting investigated "
Could that be because we live in a multi cultural society and most cases are in high populated city's that have large ethnic minority residents ? |

I think that would have something to do with it. |

"Two more nurses have died in Wales from ethnic minority backgrounds.
An investigation is underway. "
I did hear that government were urged to investigate it further. I know ethnic minorities are also over represented in the NHS and in the deaths of NHS staff. |

Some ethnic minorities have a higher incidence of diabetes and heart disease. All which tend to result in more severe symptoms.
Round by us it seems that some live in larger extended family groups which could exacerbate the spread.
Read this seems similar all around the world. |

I think it possibly also has to do with social conditions that ethnic minorities live in within these cities. So, more likely to experience poverty for example. Possibly also types of work they’re likely to do may mean they’re more vulnerable. Someone said there was links to vitamin D deficiency as well. |

I heard that ethnic minorities make up around 42% of NHS staff and I could be wrong but I think it said that the first ten people who died were from ethnic minority.
It's been a thing in America too |

That's not the message, it's just another reason for white people to feel guilty. |

Women should feel guilty as well I guess? I heard in China, most victims were Asian. |

Good point, blacks and Asians are pre-disposed to a range of potentially serious conditions where C19 has traction, especially where these illnesses are coupled with obesity.
Others have also mentioned the over representation in the NHS/care working. |

There's two different issues here. The NHS workers are dying from direct exposure to Covid19
Ethnic minorities are dying due to a variety of issues. The majority are socio-economic in origin. Similar to what has been seen in the states. |

I don't disagree but ethnic minorities working in the NHS are over represented, they (and the wider black/Asian population) may also be experiencing the comorbidities which make them particularly susceptible to C19, whatever their background or exposure risk. |

I work with a Nigerian guy and at the beginning he honestly believed that black people were immune to coronavirus, he kept saying that it's a European and asian problem and that Africans would be immune! |

He’s not the only one.
It was going around on social media because the virus hadn’t reached Africa at that point.
It was really stupid and dangerous for people to say so, there’s always someone out there who will believe it. |

Families of ethnic minority often have higher numbers living within the one house. Therefore proximity closer to others.
If poorer may not be able to afford as much cleaning products.
They may have jobs which still require them to go to work at this time. Therefore increasing the risk of exposure.
They might not be taking it as seriously? Note this is speculation it may not be the case.
It may be something genetic but I'm sceptical of that. |

I Africa they would generally get more sunlight so make more vit D,their darker skin reduces that in northern climes, IF of course Vit D is involved.
Men also seem more prone to dying from it, there was some thought it is due to higher numbers smoking |

Its been a similar story in parts of Asia as well. For some places, the internet is facebook so its fake news central. |

I think your point will add to the sum of the problem, but blacks and Asians are certainly genetically predisposed to certain diseases and illnesses eg Type II diabetes, hypertension, stroke, prostate cancer. These genetic features make black people particularly vulnerable to the effects of the virus. |

He since changed his tune! Now critical of the Nigerian government for not instigating a lockdown sooner.

now add those health issues to the socio-economic factors like housing, education, income & employment, language and religion.
And you're right, the over representation in the NHS does mean that some of the most vulnerable are in the worst position. |

As I said I don't disagree and I certainly don't believe working in the NHS is the predominant issue other than the increased exposure risk amongst a relatively small % of the black population. |
