What item are you still struggling to get hold of...

For me its eggs.. unless I go really early.. in fact not seen any just empty shelves for over 2 weeks now.

I have managed to get some from the lady at the bottom of the street but only 6 at a time and use more than that most days.

When making the bread dough. Instead of using water. Why not use beer. Yes beer flavour bread.

Homepride self raising flour.

It's like rocking horse poo at the moment!

However I did read up on the lack of flour in the shops.

It's not that there is a lack of it being produced it's the packaging it into the retail size that's the problem.

Over 90% of flour is sold in large quantities.

Only 4% of UK Flour production goes to all the Supermarkets, in the sized bags we know & buy.

The rest is manufactured into large capacity bags or sacks for the Bakeries in supermarkets, independent bakers and related outlets & shops.

This was covered in a TV programme a couple of weeks ago, which said the big flour mills are working 24/7, having taken on more staff to allow production to run 24/7.

One major flour mill, the biggest in the UK, is producing 110,000 bags a week, but cannot keep up with demand as people resort to home baking.

For each 150g of flour add half a teaspoon each of baking powder and bicarbonate of soda

All you need to do is add bicarb and baking powder. I googled it a while ago but can’t remember the exact quantities

White bread flour and yeast are the only things we’re struggling with. I’ve just ordered a 500g pack of yeast on eBay so only flour to source now before we’re back to making our own bread again.

We’re really fortunate with eggs. We’ve got 5 hens who are keeping us so well supplied that we’ve been giving them away to friends and neighbours

I might be missing something here, but now supermarket shelves are more or less back to normal, and bread is plentiful again, why are people still wanting flour?

MacD's said they'd stay closed till Govt says the conditions are right to open.

They also did so to keep their staff safe which to be honest, should be a far more important aspect than a Big Mac!

I ordered a 500g bag of yeast on eBay today. I know it’s a very large bag but we make a lot of bread. Hubby also got strong white flour from the local One Stop convenience store, coop brand which I find slightly odd as we couldn’t get any from coop when we tried

They did it because to mitigate their liability to litigation.

Mac d have taken a 1 billion dollar line of credit out after the virus.

Like most big firms they are protecting their bottom line and spinning it as a pr stunt.

We have two large flour mills in the town where I live and both are running 24/7, one is owned by Hovis and produces only Bread flour all of which leaves the mill in bulk tankers. The other mill is privately owned they also sell mainly in bulk, either tanker or large bags, They do not have sufficient machines to allow increased production of the size bags we look for in supermarkets, When I contacted them about this I was told that I could have 20 ton tanker load within days, I think this was very much tongue in cheek though.

I do think the lack of flour and bread flour is positive as we are starting to go back to basics and bake for ourselves. I am prepared to get shot down for this, it just brings back childhood memories of baking with my Nan

Nothing. Just quantity really. We can only buy three tins of anything. 2 tins of beans for us is a normal meal. Or tuna even... We are a family of 6 so go through a lot of food.

I'm also having to shop for my pregnant daughter who lives in her own place so I'm having to do two trips as they won't let me get anything doubled up. Meaning I'm out more than I want to be.

UHT milk.

Because we have a small fridge we always use UHT. While this is going on we are having to use fresh and replenish it daily.

Plant based UTH milks are usually easier to come by. Oatly barista is the closest to cows milk.
