92 care homes have reported cases in the last 24 hrs. I hope they all survive.

They are someones loved ones. They helped build the world we enjoy. Must be scary for them and the staff too.

It must be devastatimg for the staff who have got to know their residents over a number of years in some cases.

The fear is when it takes hold how quickly it's going to spread

We're expecting very little/none professional support from outside and are being told to put pressure on residents/families to sign DNARs so medical prodessionals can justify just leaving the residents there to die and for the staff to just have to get on with it, with, in some places, very little by the way of appropriate PPE. The outlook isn't good across the country.

How have they caught it ? , I thought care homes have been on lockdowns for ages , no visitors at all and the staff are all staying there as well .

"How have they caught it ? , I thought care homes have been on lockdowns for ages , no visitors at all and the staff are all staying there as well . "

Exactly we've been on lock down for 4 weeks.

Any symptons for the virus would have shown after 10 days if someone had it.

So whos spreading it around all these care homes when they have been on tighter lock down rules than most?

Its not airborne so rule that out.

The elderly cant just suddenly contract it out of nothing.

So who is the super spreader passing it around care homes?

South Wales

There was a Care Home Manager on the news yesterday and the News Reporter said to her something along the lines of “it must of been awful watching these residents die alone” and the Care Home Lady said “Oh some have had family in, their family wanted to be with them at the end”.

I think that could be a contributory factor right there.

All of the staff have lives outside of work, plus there will be medical professionals and other external agencies who are in and out of care homes regularly. It only takes one contact to bring it in, even a door handle or plastic packaging can be the contact point.

Staff go home at the end of their shifts. They may live with someone who is also out working. Staff may go into care homes and not display symptoms. It is so easy to spread so if one person gets the virus it will spread quick.

No , I’ve seen at least 3 homes on the tv , where staff have moved in full time to look after the people in the homes ,

It's exactly the time to be asking these questions and apply some critical thinking.

There are 1000s of care homes in UK. Most staff are unable to move in.

Sadly the issue is that a person can have coronovirus but show no or very little symptoms so it's easy for a staff member or delivery driver to spread its still all unknown.

This exactly, the care workers will be coming and going, deliveries being made, cleaners coming in and out possibly maintenance and repairs, lockdown doesn’t mean the place is sealed up, some movement in and out is still required.

Coronovirus also appears to be able to survive several hours outside the body meaning it can survive in the air suspended in moisture droplets you exhale, sneeze or cough out (sneezing and coughing omit larger droplets breathing also omits moisture ever breathed on a cold window) an infected person only has to walk down a corridor to spread it. As care homes have mostly hot and moist atmosphere (19-21C being the most comfortable) it can probably survive the longest in this atmosphere which is created in care homes for patients comfort.

Good point and probably little natural movement of air through ventilation.

It is very shocking. People dying in their homes of the virus are also not counted. We've stopped listening to the figures (deaths and confirmed cases) as they're not a true reflection of what is happening.

This..

The figures are being massively under reported, its probably a couple of or several thousand more in care homes and the community..

Guy on 5live just now saying that the Ons are going to be releasing figures on Thursday..

He mentioned an increase of 60% in deaths above what would be the average, I didn't catch the time frame he was referring to..

For whatever reason the care sector be that in homes or at home looks to be in dire straits and rightly some staff are feeling let down and scared..

Thoughts are with them..

ONS stats released today (to 3rd April) cover deaths in community and in care homes.

They suggest the "actual" number of deaths should be around 10-15% higher than the daily reported "hospital" deaths.

Someone stated categorically that only elderly and people with underlying conditions at the same time as the WHO was saying anyone could die from it.

I think there would be a lot less casualties if people truly understood the nature of this virus. Too much minimalising.

In Spain, the deceased (from probable C19) in care homes etc have to be removed by specially trained teams, with full PPE etc, the article was taken out of context, the authorities were called by concerned relatives, and they found deceased in their beds. Once teams are called, due to high numbers, it did take them a while to get there. Homes there only had skeleton staff also, due to infection or self-isolation. People were not left to die alone uncared for.

It’s got to be very difficult putting a finger on the number of deaths. How many very ill people picked up the covid being treated in hospital? How many also would swab positive for mrsa?

People die in the UK all the time.

This is so new it’s hard to determine what’s going on with any certainty. Of all these deaths, how many perfectly fit and well people contracted it out of nowhere and ended up dead. No comorbidities? The few cases we see in the press, one assumes, are exceptions rather than the rule. Like the hysterical don’t take ibuprofen news. The press just muddy the waters for ad click revenue.

I think we are getting caught up somewhere between a medical emergency, and a flap. That’s just my opinion, I’m not asserting it as fact, and I know many will disagree. At the moment we are hypersensitive to any mention of the new C word.

If the figures and initial data from the source, China, were massaged (something we can assume is fact - I wouldn’t trust my government let alone one that doesn’t allow its citizens to search tianenmen square massscre online) then every sum done subsequently was based on erroneous data. The early models, the flipping from herd immunity to total lockdown based on new epidemiology advice, was all wrong given the original data was unreliable.

How many more people than normal have died? After all the uk does have a death rate around 60k annually. How many over this will we be by 2021. My bet, not too many over...

I don’t trust the news on this right now; they say anything to get clicks. A vaccine is either ready by September or 18 months away depending which paper you read on Sunday.

I think there may be a seasonal bump but many of those would have died this year anyway. I don’t expect the annual figure to be massively different. Just an opinion.

How many more people than normal have died? After all the uk does have a death rate around 60k annually. How many over this will we be by 2021. My bet, not too many over...

50-60 % increase so far in comparison according to figures on the news for this period in comparison to previous years going back to 2005

Gudo but you can watch it on bbc2 right now if you wanted

"92 care homes have reported cases in the last 24 hrs. I hope they all survive.

They are someones loved ones. They helped build the world we enjoy. Must be scary for them and the staff too.

"

This is terrible I have a couple of friends who work in care homes and an aunt living in one,she is confused does not really know what is happening as she is locked in her room all day it is terrible. Not only the deaths but the mental stress and damage to both staff and residents is a tradgedy just as much as hospital deaths

This is the forgotten horror story. Old people locked in their rooms like prisoners, many not even fully aware what’s going on. It’s not fair and not right and any decent person should be a little concerned at this.

Some care homes are now understaffed because carers are refusing to work/self isolating. I am worried that we may find people dying in care because they were locked up and forgotten about, as happened in Spain.

They are also sending patients directly to us from hospital wards with Covid positive patients in them, without testing them first. We are trying to isolate as far as we practically can but we cannot by law lock residents in their rooms. Some suffer from dementia and have no concept of isolation plus you have the ones, just like wider society, who feel the rules don't apply to them and decline to follow instructions, thus putting themselves and others at risk. Symptomatic residents have not been tested, despite what you may hear on the news.

As for moving in, it's a job.It pays my bills. When my shift is finished, I come home, as a single parent I have no other choice.

We are fortunate at the moment to have a decent level of PPE but who knows how long that will last

Careworkers do not lock folk up and forget about them. We are there to care and we work endlessly to look after and protect them. It is not easy but they are never forgotten about. I was quite angry to think that was what some people were thinking. You have no idea.

I second this. The only people they're being forgotten by is the government. Those of us who care for the elderly do so for a reason and treat them as if they were one of our own

Northampton Somewhere

The news is heartbreaking tonight, for the residents, their relatives and the staff who care for them. I'm sure they said there's cases in 2000 homes.

They don't stand a chance really

I work in care and staff are coming and going.

We shut out respite service as it was high risk but we will be deployed elsewhere.

Most care staff have very little PPE.

I've been glued to the news on this, I was deeply shocked to hear how staff have been left with little support.

I saw the interviews with senior officials speaking for the care home sector and staff.

You brave souls need proper recognition in a time of emergency, which this clearly is.

I watched channel 4 news tonight with a report on this and it appears that care homes have been cajoled in to take covid patients from the hospitals...bed blockers. But the care homes have had enough as they cant get the require PPE that they need for the patients.

The company's the government told them to contact for PPE had all shut down for easter...you couldn't fecking write it!

In the middle of a pandemic we will have 4 days off. ffs

saw some stats for care homes in the EU.

They have a death rate of 45% to 57 % in such establishments . Unfortunately there are 3 such places in my village. .

I don't know what the problem is, most will die in homes get over it. Care homes are built and run for profit 1st people 2nd, we have let this go on for year's turning a blind eye to it . Care homes should be run by the state like the nhs, but no one had the balls to privatised it.
