Any body like to comment on the link between the BCG and countries that have used it and lower Covid death rates

"Any body like to comment on the link between the BCG and countries that have used it and lower Covid death rates "

Would be useful if you'd provide some evidence to the theory.

I had a BCG jab when at school. That was a few decades ago.

Are you saying the UK has a lower death rate than other countries?

A

Virologist on tv now. Says there is a correlation between having had the jab and milder symptoms of CV. More tests being done.

Also saying it could be a year at least before we get a vaccine.

That would be handy if it's true I had the bcg done when I was in school. We were the only year to ever get it in our school which always seemed a bit weird.

I have had a BCG. I can distinctly remember people running round punching each other on the bastard thing.

Doubt it lessens this virus though.

It was given to most kids at school but was stopped in the 80's because the benefits were reduced.

My guess is you were in the final year it was given.

If you were literally the only year group then there was likely a case, or potential case, related to someone in your year group

It was standard in Scotland until it was replaced in 2005 with a programme that sees high risk children get it as babies instead

It’ll be interesting to see the full data in time on this one

If there is fewer cases in populations that still have a large vaccination programme then it’ll be a case of working out if it’s because of the vaccine or because of another factor (as obviously there are reasons why some places have a full vaccine programme and some don’t)

It ran til 2005 in the UK.

Which given it started in 1953 would mean many of those that have died after testing positive will have had it.

From what I've read, countries who still give the vaccine as part of their standard set of vaccines seem to have a lower death and/or infection rate, which I think is apparently a rate 6 times less than countries that don't give it anymore.

Saying that me and my ex husband come from a country that still gives the vaccine to everyone, his British girlfriend and her son got it, I think the son got it first and the worst, he's 15 so def no bcg, but my ex husband, who lives in the same house didn't get it at all. And when we were married he was so susceptible to anything, if anyone got sick, he was guaranteed to get it, I mean he even had pneumonia in the middle of a South African summer in his 20s, so I don't think he's got the best immune system. so may be something to it, and a booster to the BCG is all we might need, or my ex was just really lucky to not get it

But it is all still maybes and theories.... If it does work, the plus side is that this is a vaccine that has been used safely in humans for years, so we may hopefully not have to wait 12+ months for a safe vaccine.... So fingers crossed

I didn't need the BCG vaccination as I'm naturally immune.... I'm still staying in. I've been in since 10/03.... My 13 old is asthmatic and was showing symptoms. He's fine now. But it's definitely a worry still as my husband is at work, never stopped working and could bring the virus home

The only interesting part of the link is the bit about needing less hype and more evidence.....

There's not much in the way of science or facts behind it.. could be about as much use as drinking vodka in Ukraine?

Pretty sure I was in the last or last but one yeargroup to get it at school. From what I have been reading there might be a link, but its going to be impossible to know for a very long time. I think its always been regarded that BCG gives you a general immune system kick, maybe that has something to do with it, purely speculation.

Yeah I googled it, was called a heaf test, I remember a lot of my Asian friends didn't have to have it, think persons of asian origins and/or persons of color are more vulnerable to tb and are vaccinated as babies.

"Also saying it could be a year at least before we get a vaccine."

I think we would be very very lucky if a vaccine was produced that quickly. No other vaccine has ever been produced that quickly...

When they date a year that’s if they can produce one and then test it sufficiently to use it at the moment they can not even produce one let alone test it.

When there's a robust amount of evidence for it, alongside the assessment of any risks and confounding factors, it's worthy of consideration.

I'm assuming that its production level could be scaled up but until then, it risks depriving some who may need it for its original purpose from getting life saving treatment, if stocks are limited. Worst case, richer areas seize stock, like Trump with this virus, whilst poorer nations get children stricken with another deadly disease.

I find this potential link very interesting. Back in my lab days i worked on a project where I tested whether using BCG as an adjuvant would was enhance the immune response to the actual thing you wanted to vaccinate with and preliminary results showed it could. Somehow seemed to make the immune system re-act better.

I got the BCG vaccine myself as a teenager back when it was routinely offered. But given we're Asian, my own kids were vaccinated as babies given they might be exposed to TB through visitors from the Indian sub-continent.

You probably had been previously exposed, but were asymptomatic and your immune system either suppressed it or fought it off. When I went for the ‘daisy test’, my result was slightly raised, indicating that I had been previously exposed, so I was told. However, the result wasn’t severe enough for me not to have the vaccine - to my dismay at the time!

"And TB.....a droplet bourne infection, which is totally treatable, is still killing far more people than Covid19 every day."

Apart from that's not true, is it?

TB killed 1.5 million people in 2018. Assuming those deaths were spread evenly throughout the year (given it is an established virus that does not seem unreasonable) that is 4,100 deaths per day.

Corona killed about 5,500 people yesterday. And likely could be higher if other countries are under-reporting like we are here in the UK.

I know my sister had the BCG vaccine, as she has a dimple in her arse as a result. I remember I don't think I had is as the heaf test (if I'm remembering my vaccines right) showed I didn't need the BCG. I've not seen anything about if it is the *vaccine* itself that means people getting less symptoms of Covid-19 or if you would still have lesser symptoms if you were shown not to need the BCG vacc in the first place (via the Heaf test).
