We live in a small village and everyone is doing the good deeds and staying isolated. Now there is a holiday cottage 2 doors down from us. The owners have turned up from Southampton, we are near Middlesbrough. Either side if them are elderly couples. So dilemma is, do we report them. Are we being snitches etc for doing so?
Any help is appreciated |

If you know for sure they have travelled from Southampton - call the local police.

It sounds like they think they are excluded from the rules that everyone else is abiding by.
They are being selfish and oblivious to the risk they are posing to those around them. Report them |

Unfortunately YOU now have the moral dilemma as a result of posting in this chat room. Perhaps you would do well to make sure that all your suspicions are indeed correct and that unquestionable evidence back's up any subsequent assertion you wish to make.... |

Absolutely.
That's a job for the authorities.

They've turned up very recently? I suppose really they shouldn't but but seeing as they have they shoulstay in for 14 days just in case. If they don't do that and you see them popping to the shops potentially spreading anything they've brought up with them then, yeah, I think I'd report.
Rules are rules. |

Putting people’s lives at risk isn't at all trivial.
You shouldn't feel guilty or uncomfortable about this.

They may feel safer in their village, mental health reasons etc.
One elderly couple pose very little threat to you.
The last thing we need now is a police state where people are turning against each other and reporting minor situations.
It's important for us to realise what is risk and what is not at the moment.

I wouldn't assume from the OP that the people who have moved in are elderly but she did say both houses adjoining are elderly people.
But, regardless, they are wrong for doing it. |

Ah yes. I see I read that wrong. Still I feel it poses little threat in the scheme of things if everyone is still isolating. It's probably more risky going to the shop than having a couple decide to change their location.
I'm sure the police have far more pressing things to be dealing with regarding lock down instructions. |

Stupid question. I don't know if you can get COVID-19 again once you have caught it. I am assuming you can't because the what the hell is herd immunity about. If you are immune, can you still pass it on?
Because if we are going to have an increasing population of people who are immune to the virus do they need to be keeping away from everyone. Just asking... |

They shouldn't be able to be infectious, but if they touch a surface that has some virus on it then they could spread it onto something or someone but if they wash their hands before touching say shopping for an old person then no they aren't a risk to others |

I’d advise against reporting them. (As long as they’re not now doing something that is putting others at extreme risk)
The police are busy, won’t send anyone to speak to them as it then risks the cops getting it, and it’s a waste of time them investigating it. I’d try not to worry and concentrate on staying safe and positive. Good luck |

I'm not comfortable with how we are blithely allowing ourselves to be turned into a police state, watching and reporting on our neighbours.
If those in power are going against their own advice and lying/trying to justify breaking the rules they want us to keep...hmmmm...don't know if I'm honest.

I do get your point, I hate being told what to do and how to behave, but if people behaved like responsible members of the society that cares and nurtures them, then there would be no need for enforcement. |

I agree with this I think
I dont need to virtue signal become all shouty and condemn them to death
I think they did wrong
I have stayed away I'd have preferred it if they had too
Now in answer to the OP
What good can come from reporting them ?
You will get extra brownie points on social media that's for certain
However
Risk wise they pose no more than they did at home maybe even less now their journey is over
If the police are informed 2 things
One they will be taking precious resources away from more important matters (open to debate )
Two if the police did go to visit then ABSOLUTELY contamination risk increases
And that would be tragic
Be proud you're not breaking any of the rules or pushing your luck be proud there is absolutely no risks you have taken at that absolutely you cannot be infected or infect others
DON'T report them but DO tell social media you have |

"Report them.
They have put the elderly neighbours at risk!
If they have a legitimate reason for being there then the police are best placed to advise"
And of course the elderly neighbor's they live next to at home dont count ?
The more densely populated neighbourhood they live it was not more risky to take their daily walk ?
I think very few understand statistical and actual risk
If I was doing a risk assessment here I'm not sure there would be much in it
Certainly not sure it's worth risking 2 police and their families lives ? |

Maybe one of them has it and they have a vulnerable person or front line worker in the same house so have decided to remove themselves, could even have asked the cops if it was ok, as long as they keep away from everyone for 14 days cant see its anyones business.

This..
Op, its a dilemma for you clearly..
Perhaps approach them and simply ask?
If you word it that your keeping an eye on the elderly neighbours and your curious why they have showed up now..
If they are having to be away from their home as some have stated they simply may not have anywhere else to go..
Until you ask its all supposition.. |

I was not aware of the current law where I'm obligated to watch the movements and report anything against guidelines
In that case if it is law the op does not need to ask the forum he must report it |

It did not help when the lockdown announced that people started rushing around the country and indeed the world spreading as they went

They were wrong to go
Now
Ok quick risk maths
Let's assume they have it
Both of them
How exactly are the elderly neighbours sticking to the rules going to catch it ?
Now
2 police turn up the bad couple do have it
The police cannot avoid contact
The police get it there wives get it
If we are strictly discussing spread prevention
Not involving the police
If we need to punish despite the risks report is correct
I'd prefer not to risk the situation further
What if the wife of the policeman was your daughter and she dies because of this ? |

So do i which makes me think they havr gone out for the day as we live near the coast. We seem ti have been attacked by a few peeps on here but when you live in a popular tourist area this is a real dilemma especial when i would not normally be bothered what others got upto as long as they weren't harming anyone else god knows i have my own secrets but would never harm or risk harming others x |

Im not stupid if i did report it it would not be through 999 as no it is not an emergency as i have already said we live un an arra that is popular wuth tourist bring near the coast whitby and the northyorkshire moors and the risk is if one tourist (second home owner) thinks its ok then others will to |

My mother of 85 lives alone and it's a 50 mile round trip for me to see her. On either side of her the two houses are second homes. Before all this started the people who owned those houses often came up and stayed, and often used to help my mother getting shopping in and other things. Now she feels isolated, alone and scarred. Personally, as long as they keep 2 meters away, I would welcome those second home owners being next door to help keep an eye on my elderly mother and maybe help buying essential supplies.
I would say that before you go running to the local constabulary to dob these people, in you find out how the elderly people you're concerned about feel about them being there. They may actually be quite grateful to have them close, but not too close, by. |

If they had just come up and were being sensible and staying in, I would be unsure about reporting them.
If it appears that they are going out for day trips, this greatly increases putting people at risk. In this case, I do think you should report them.
Check your local police website, I believe you can report online if you choose to do so. |

Wisest comment here in my opinion. Talk to them maybe? +2m away, you never know what the story is, I'd find out first, why move from Southhampton? it is not as bad there as it is in Middlesborough. Makes no sense to move - must be another reason, to be closer to family maybe? ask 'em. Be kind.

They will have been to the store near their first home, then will almost certainly go to the store near their second home. That is how it can spread. Not cool. |

Sir
Imo absolute sense
If strict social distancing is adhered to there is little issue
I am vastly more concerned virus wise about people being too close in shops buses still operating and many many many businesses open and operating without good hand hygiene or social distancing
I hope your mother is in good spirits and someone can be close by

Report them. The rules around visiting holiday homes/second homes is clear. As I explained to my hubby who wanted to go away in the caravan somewhere quiet, it's not just about isolating or social distancing. If we all clear off to quieter places and get sick it places a lot of strain on potentially limited medical resources.

But if you leave London for a second home and then get sick, you have actually reduced the strain on London hospitals which are the overloaded ones. |

Here
Rules is rules they ARE murdering scum rule breakers
Hang them high and long
Look they did wrong
If everyone did it it would be messy
They haven't it isn't
Allow the police to get along their job and not indirect valuable resources

"If it was your parents infected and died because of them what would you feel ?
Report them please
They may actually be quite grateful to have them close, but not too close, by."
This is good sense. |

Part of the reason for non essential travel is to limit the risk of potential road accidents, which would put more pressure on the nhs and emergency services. We don't know in this situation why these people have turned up to their holiday home. Do what you think you should OP. |

The annual statistics illustrate more hospital admissions from cooking DIY and home incidents that driving
It's no coincidence that a e administrations rocket at bank holidays and it's not from travel
But hey ho let's continue finger wagging
Rules is rules despite facts
They did wrong
The specific risk THEY pose is minimal or even less than their previous locations
If everyone had broken the rules it would be messy
We NEED rules
It's done no harm done the police are busy

I agree Samiss. It isn’t finger wagging. My life is as important as theirs and their rights are no greater than mine.
I would report them and leave it to the police to deal with it. No matter how small a risk it is they shouldn’t do it and the rules are there for all, not just those that want to adhere. We would be in a sorry state if we all decided to do our own thing. |

"We live in a small village and everyone is doing the good deeds and staying isolated. Now there is a holiday cottage 2 doors down from us. The owners have turned up from Southampton, we are near Middlesbrough. Either side if them are elderly couples. So dilemma is, do we report them. Are we being snitches etc for doing so?
Any help is appreciated "

"I'm not comfortable with how we are blithely allowing ourselves to be turned into a police state, watching and reporting on our neighbours.
If those in power are going against their own advice and lying/trying to justify breaking the rules they want us to keep...hmmmm...don't know if I'm honest.
"
Plus good luck living next door to them afterwards, when you've snitched on them instantly. |

No, you're not snitching. You're keeping you and your community safe, so please report this.
You are ultimately doing the errant holiday homers a favour as well... even if they can't see it.
