See a lot of people keeping talking about a full lock down to stop this horrible virus, I have still had to work every day since the supposed lock down began, seems to me there are a lot more people still working than most people realise. |

Longer hours still in the office. Almost everyone else is working from home though but we needed someone in the office and I volunteered. Girlfriend is working fulltime from home.
What I don't understand is why building sites seem to still be working and also a local quarry. I'm not seeing how these are essential? |

My company makes some things that are required for essential services to keep going but the majority of what we produce is almost certainly not, most of the workforce is pretty unhappy about being there to say the least. |

The Government hasn't made any distinction between essential and non-essential work.
If you can work from home, then you should do.
If you can't, then go to work, where your employer should maintain safe working practises, especially around social distancing. |

Reading in a well respected trade journal a lot of the large companies are still insisting on enforcing time penalty clauses, hence the pressure being passed down to the lower levels of(mostly self employed) workers? If the government pressures the larger companies to give everyone a break I'm pretty sure the majority would prefer to stay home or operate safer working practices? As usual the profit motive rules and the government cave in to their sponsors? Sad days. |

Yep, on a building site. Where it is deemed ok providing you wash your hands regularly, don’t touch your face and keep 2 metres clear of anyone else. The HSE have stopped all site visits as they think they’re too dangerous for their inspectors apparently. Work that one out. |

Exactly this, people keep mentioning essential work. But they haven’t said only essential businesses should still be open have they ? As long as social distancing can be maintained in the workplace then there’s no reason why businesses should be closed right ? Unless obviously you are a customer facing retail business that they said must close. |

You do realize that the profit ‘you make for the company’ is the reason they are able to keep you in employment and pay your wages ? The government purposely didn’t say that all businesses must close as they wanted where possible to keep the economy going |

Still working full time and extra
Job safe know I’m lucky
BUT my company full pay for
14 days off if suspect CV
12 weeks off full pay if u on shielding list
12 weeks off full pay if u live with someone in shielding list
As a result usual piss takers off 14 days (3 admitted nothing wrong)
1 came back of sick on half pay as been off that long then went off 12 weeks full pay on shielding
List us endless as a result still busy and never worked so hard as on a few in and told we need to go the extra mile as difficult times
I know I’m lucky as safe hub and shouldn’t complain but just feel done over by lazy piss takers on team

Where possible we all must work, the economy will go into meltdown otherwise. We must all think of the bigger picture for the future. It’s not just a personal battle for survival, this thing can potentially ruin the future for you and generations after you. Everything has a ‘knock on’ effect. Once businesses start collapsing one by one, it’ll be very difficult to stop.

Nope fake news. The word essential is in relation to the travel to work. It means work from home if you can, only TRAVEL to work if the trip is essential, as in you can’t work from home. |

"There is nothing in the government guidelines about essential businesses being the only ones open.
Work from home if you can, if not, go to work but observe social distancing.
I think people are reading the information wrong. I believe many on here think you should only be working still if it’s essential. That’s not what was said
Have said exactly the same from day 1.
There are a couple of radio adds running in the south that say essential work only, I'm sure I've heard it on the tv too.
I'm still working where I'm able following guidelines, but finding it harder to get required items so I can work, also having to defend myself to others for going to work.
Nope fake news. The word essential is in relation to the travel to work. It means work from home if you can, only TRAVEL to work if the trip is essential, as in you can’t work from home. "
many are interpreting this differently... and wrongly. |

I'm still working full time 6 days a week and 7 days are there if I want them
Suppliers to butchers and all the big supermarkets and wholesalers
All increased orders due to the amount of fuckwits bulk buying food that's going to be binned as they have no chance of eating it as they have no more room in their freezers?? |

I’m not sure how many people are still bulk buying now, the supermarkets shelves seem back to usual now fully stocked again. Remember there’s no eating out and takeaways are also hugely down so there’s much more home cooking going on. Coupled with the fact a lot of people have much more time at home I think people are cooking more from scratch than they used to. All this probably makes up for the increased demand you are experiencing |

Yes and this is massive problem but the media aren't highlighting the number of non essential workers who are still being forced to go to work but there companies. I'm lucky as I'm in a job where I can currently work from home but given the number of facebook adverts for all sorts of products its clear many are still working, amongst others, in warehouses and distribution. |

You will find a lot of companies still working as they provide the nhs and other emergency services with a product even if it’s just one product like a bin for example or a component for an item that another company builds for the NHS, so if the company is happy to make money and not worry over the health risk of their employees they can do so, they may also be concerned about the NHS not getting the supplies they need of course. On the flip side there are probably jobs where people can work but decided to take the Furlough thinking it would be a nice paid break not thinking long term that the business could go under. I know of a company bringing their employees back in next week as they have been Furloughed for 3 weeks, kind of thought this a little crazy if we are supposed to be at the peak. |

I'm still working full time in my business it's not essential but it's allowed under government guidelines. 3 staff have been furloghed and me and one other are operating and being kept reasonably busy.
It means the other 3 have a better chance of the business still being there when they return. |

I've gone from 45 hours down to 30 per week. An 80% furlough would have been financially much better off for us, but I still trudge in daily.
I agree that there seems to be a lot more people working than we realise. |

Restrictions ? ALL warehouses can still remain open if they are able to follow social distancing rules. There is no rule that you can only stay open if your classed as essential work |

And this is the point. So many non essential people are working, and many reports that companies such as Amazon and M&S warehouse staff aren't able to stay 2m apart. Another example is contruction, people come from all over the country to work on sites its a perfect way for it to spread (source Construction news article - yep I was bored!)
The point is without government action on this the lock down is being undermined. |

Still working fulltime in a job which is not essential, the compnay will not furlough unless the government forces it to.
Most of the time employees are well more than 2 metres apart but its not always possible and there are still deliveries coming in and other bods occasionaly turning up looking for things to be made or repaired and there seems no attempt to stop travellers from moving around as they still come in looking for scrap.
After nearly 3 weeks in proximity of work colleagues you hope that no one is being completely stupid but there is suspicion that one is going regularly to see a girlfriend and another is meeting up with mates.
This is when folk can start to turn on each other.
I am in the fortunate position where i could just not go in and i could survive for a few months however lets say i had done so when lockdown was implemented it would now be almost 3 weeks, when do i go back? There is no apparent exit strategy, its looking like many months, do i go back then? Would there still be a job?
This is where the Government are failing big time.
If they had said 3 weeks ago that non essential work had to close for 3 weeks then i think we would have been further towards the end of lockdown. |

I think people are missing the point of the ‘furlough’. It’s a job retention scheme. Designed to keep people in work who otherwise would be losing their jobs completely. So if a company is going to make a member of staff redundant, the government are saying don’t and we will cover their wages (80% of) for three months.
The government are never going to simply tell every single non essential business to close and cover 80% of the entire countries employees
They don’t want to completely shut down the UK economy as this would be catastrophic. Hence why the only businesses they are advising should not currently open are ones where customers will be coming into direct contact with people. |

Yeah I understand all the government guidelines. I’m intrigued though. You say u don’t feel you are an essential worker. That’s the reason u suggest u shouldn’t be working, no mention of due to the fact you are being made to break social distancing rules
U do realize that non essential workers have not been asked to stop work don’t you ? |
