Just been reading some of the Spanish press this morning and picked up a few examples of what lockdown means there.
1. A couple were fined in a Torrevieja supermarket for shopping together. The rules state that you are only allowed to go shopping alone. Also you are only allowed to visit the supermarket that is closest to your home. Police are checking ID and till receipts and handing out fines for violations.
2. In a small town near Valencia a man was fined 600€ for shopping for non essentials. They checked his receipt and he had only bought soft drinks, chocolate and sausages.
3. No more than one adult is allowed to be in a car other than in exceptional circumstances. Children must sit in the back.
4. Benidorm is closed. And I mean closed. Over the Easter period police will seal off every entrance into the town. Only essential services will be allowed through.
Now that really is Lockdown.  |

The problem seems to be that despite a much more severe lockdown in Spain and for a longer period the results seem to be no different than here.
Yet Sen still not locked down but much less transmission.
How are out "leaders" meant to know what works best?
I can't see our lockdown changing much either way....but i do see it lasting a MINIMUM of another month!! |

5. A man was shot dead in the Philippines. Ostensibly for not wearing a mask but if you read a bit further into it you see that he threatened police after being told off - so you could argue that he was shot for threatening the police. |

Spain reached its peak and is going down. This may happen in 2 weeks in UK or not. If it doesn't happen (I'm sure it won't) we will know for sure that our "lockdown" is ridiculous. But it will also be too late to avoid many thousands of deaths. |

Have you ever been? if so you would know that the townships dont have balconies most only have one room and i can assure you cape town in winter is no fun.

My parents live in turkey and if your over 60 your not allowed out at all even for food. They have to have it delivered by a friend.
But hey at least they have beautiful surroundings and a large pool and each other so not too bad. |

We were in Capetown for the first 2 weeks of March this year and were lucky to get back home when we did.
Ater taking a tour around langa the oldest township in Capetown my heart goes out to all of the family's there. Many have 10+ crammed into a single room which is no more than a hut cobbled together from corregrated iron and similar left overs.
Thers no benefits in south africa for those of working age 18-60 during normal times let alone now. Many rely on selling fruit, furniture, trinkets on the streets and this has all been stopped. With nothing set from thier government in place to help with this.

Such opulent wealth alongside such desperate poverty.
I recently worked in Buenos Aires and on the drive from the airport there was an area where tarpaulin was stretched between derelict cars to make "homes". In contrast I stayed in a 5 star hotel, hot tub on the top floor and all expenses paid.... life is really cruel for some at the best of times  |

Really!
There is much more to Spain than Benidorm & Marbella, and even there it isn't "endless" sunshine at this time of year.
It's currently pissing down in Galicia (that is north west Spain) and forecast to get most of the country in the next few hours.
All have balconies? On the costa's mostly yes, but get into the inland towns and cities and there are thousands upon thousands that don't. |

We are to soft in this country,I would like to see over Easter road blocks and heavy fines for people trying to get to country and seaside,use the army if needed.It is our softness that is costing lives

Was talking to a chap this morning on another forum who has family in SA he said deaths from other causes have rocketed since lockdown and are far more than from the virus, it's easy for many to call for stricter measures when they have space ina garden etc, try living in a township or a high rise in this country with young kids. It's quite simple if you dont want to catch it then stay in, if you need to go out for exercise or to relieve serious stress then with sensible precautions that's fine, local council have closed of a local wood that people use to walk their dogs, they now have to walk elsewhere so increasing the density of people in that area |

South Africa?? I read the OP’s post and I’m talking about Spain. Nowhere did they mention Cape Town, so I have no idea what you’re on about. |

Anyone thought that lockdown might cause just amount the same if deaths just confined to one area. New York City is the world hotspot for a reason. There has to be a mixture of approach

Because we can still buy non essentials as long as it’s in our weekly shop.
Also lockdown have had a real issue with mental health issues. Suicide rates have went up. I’ve seen a few people really having issues on some Facebook groups who are struggling right now. |

There are millions of Spaniards who don't have balconies and live in difficult circumstances. |

Now I totally agree with the current measures
I think the fact buses are running means we could do more simple measures to actively slow the spread
I do not think people should be allowed to travel to holiday hot spots and I do think gatherings of any size irresponsible
However we are innocent
Humans are not on lock down for punishment
This trend maybe virtue signaling to make life as un comfortable as possible does not sit right
We Are not trying to wipe out the virus via containment
Mental health is vitally important
We are surely all trying to deal with this with as little suffering as practicable
A very very very fine balance is required here which of course we will not get quite right
It goes like this
There is no vaccine
Of 100 people
80 should recover at home
17 will recover with hospital treatment
3 will die 1 to 2 would die naturally with next 9 months
That seems to be the current stats
If there was a 100 percent lockdown within 1 month it would be gone
However it currently appears that less than 2 percent of the UK would have had it
So any reduction in lockdown means we begin again
Whilst infection remains in the world and we are less than 50 percent infected we will be subjected to an exponential curve
Thus
Our NHS has capacity for x
We need to have x (20 % of infections) being treated just below capacity until
An number of us have had it and are hopefully immune
It seems the NHS can cope with 30 000 cases per month
That should mean 300 000 become infected not needing hospital
At that rate 30 million divided by 300 000 is 100 months in an isolated state
If we make rules stricter we dont work near capacity and the 100 is prolonged
If we are more lax the NHS is overwhelmed more than necessary die and we come out of lockdown quicker
Yes I did say 100 months
That's based upon the current data
Hopefully it will only be 14 and a vaccination will be developed
It matters not how strict we are and how much we can slow the spread
This will always remain
Whilst more than 60 percent have no immunity
And the virus exists in an animal or human somewhere in the world
Removing the restrictions will always continue with an exponential re increase
So yes let's promote no alcohol no plants no chocolate no teddy bear and absolutely no jogging
For 18 -100 months
Or
Please touch nothing another could have
Wash hands
Stay long way away from people if you must
Keep minimum 2 3 meters away
Stay out of crowded shops
Dont pick stuff up and put it down
Wash stuff from shops
Dont use buses
Dont mix with friends
Dont touch cash
Exercise in the least busy area you can find at the least busy time
Basically
Treat all humans you encounter as having a disease that will kill you
Dont go to any tourist spot
Protect the NHS
But also let's be a tad careful on getting pleasurabley irate and needing others to suffer perhaps beyond what could be beneficial
It's a balance a fine one at that with a few unknowns

I think there are 2 points people are missing. One we do not have enough police to enforce an effective lockdown in the style of Italy or Spain. Two other countries in northern Europe have similar restrictions to the UK in place.
Also as someone else has already observed, Italy and Spain have still suffered huge numbers of deaths despite the strict restrictions |

Child abuse has apparently dropped dramatically due to children not being in school. Hence nobody to pick up on cases i.e teachers who raise red flags.
