The middle class begging bowel

Am getting a bit sick of reading people asking what am I going to get from the government am losing out how can I live on this.

Greed at its worst we are all going to get use to living on the basics.

The ones at the bottom might get a little more but the ones at the top or in the middle are going to have to get use to having a lot less.

I say this out of no political grudge but out of a matter of fact easy jobs and making easy money in the long run are a thing of the past if your making a good living out of goods and services people can do with out your going to have to get use of living on the bread line and making do with what you have.

Am sure the greedy selfish and bitter at there loss will be the first on here to attack the points I have just made all I can say is I truly hope you keep food on the table a roof over your head and good health.

Times are going to be hard and that's all we can hope for at the moment.

No, but is there any need to start picking on one group in society? Or we could just pull together?

I stick with the threads that are right for me but sadly do agree that a good number of people will be forced to struggle from now.

It's important that we don't get pulled in by the divide and conquer ideology, looking out for it and staying resolved to hold respect and love for all.

The welfare state should be there for everyone when they need it regardless of class. The one good thing about this mess is that some people who have previously not had dealings with the benefits system now realise that living on benefits is not quite the easy life they thought it was.

Yes and hopefully it will break down the divide of the “them and us”.

Them = the virus

Us = a concerted effort to all work together to defeat the Them

We will be fine, high earning, choose to work, in a sector unaffected, will even see growth, debt free , investments/pensions hammered but it’s only money there’s much more important things.

Very easy to say when you have enough. People who don’t have enough will be hit hardest, as always because this government ideologically despises poor people. You get what you vote for

Have you done all those jobs?? Most of the people in "easy jobs" have put in years of hard work and long hours to get where they are. Why don't you do these easy jobs? Probably because you would find the sacrifice too much. Alot easier being a whinger than doing a hard days work.

There is some complete bollox spoken on here at times, that I do wonder if people actually have brains and use them before they post !

Firstly the NHS is the 7th largest employer in the world, not the UK, that’s scary stuff when you think of the money needed to fund the thing !

Yes, the staff work for the NHS pay tax and NI but it’s not self generating, if all the private sector ‘scum’ stopped paying taxes the NHS would fall over in a few months.

I work in a construction/developer related industry and let me tell you it’s not all champagne and caviar, it can be a hand to mouth existence at times !

A healthy economy needs a mix of private and public sector contributing to the system, if your are PAYE the more you earn the more you contribute, simple as that.

Before I finish, it’s worth noting that the last Labour government filled up the NHS with lots of middle and upper management, have a look at your local NHS Trust and see how many staff (not doctors and nurses) are on 50K plus, the numbers are staggering !

I would say I’m middle class I’m one of the forgotten key workers. And I’m pissed off there have been no financial help for people like me and there are hundreds.

While your there in your ivory tower...... I earn 17k a year....I expose myself, my work colleagues, service users and my own family daily at this current time.

Should I contract this virus I would get ssp which means my bills wouldn’t get paid. I am fortunate to have worked hard to pay my mortgage off and had family help.

However you say this is effecting ‘lower’ class can you tell me how?

A family living near me on benefits have just received a monthly bonus while this situation is going on, they are also getting extra child benefit and vouchers for school meals.

That same family are getting £640 more per month than me, me who’s going to work crying because I’m scared of contracting the virus and passing it on to my mother who’s in heart failure or a service user I take care off, I’m scared if I get it I would die.

So what were you saying about the middle class people?.

"The welfare state should be there for everyone when they need it regardless of class. The one good thing about this mess is that some people who have previously not had dealings with the benefits system now realise that living on benefits is not quite the easy life they thought it was.

Amen to this. It'll make interesting reading in the Daily Mail!

Least someone gets it "

"Am getting a bit sick of reading people asking what am I going to get from the government am losing out how can I live on this.

Great segregation Post OP.

"

I agree. So interested to know who are the ones at the top then? The ones who have shed blood sweat and tears to start a successful business? The ones who have worked 24/7 to make their businesses work? The ones who went to uni and studied hard for qualifications to get themselves a good career? Those ones?

"I would say I’m middle class I’m one of the forgotten key workers.

So often the case. People who don’t work being better off than those who do. Or should I say too often the case. "

Isnt that more about the abysmal levels of pay in this country?

What do you get if you dont work £94 a week?

I feel uneasy blaming other people who are hardly loaded when more deserving targets get off Scot free.Soon as the tories got in They started blaming 'scroungers'.

I hate these them and us post.

I was born in relative poverty, parents on the dole the 1980s and grew up on a rough council estate. At the same time I was blessed with kind and decent parents who taught me respect, hard work and to care for your fellow man from an early age.

Everything I have today be it our house, car, my job / career etc both me and my wife have worked bloody hard for many years to achieve and we are still working hard to continue to progress in our fields. I'm sorry if that means I earn more / have more than someone who has stepped into a little to no experience needed, min wage, entry level job. I have worked my way up at 17 yrs old I was a trolley porter at Asda on weekends so I had a little money and could go to college to do my A Levels. Prior to that as a young teenager I had a paper round whilst at school just to have a little money in my pocket and a decent pair of trainers on my feet. (those Sunday papers were as heavy as hell! lol).

A strong work effort will take anybody a long way.

People who earn more also pay out significantly more tax and the last time I looked my tax is what pays for the benefits system, toward the NHS and so on not the governments special magic money tree.

Stay safe (raitnbow)

A town near you

What do you say to the self employed who grew up on the bread line themselves and pulled themselves up and now/did employ others, have finance to pay on business equipment and mortgages to pay, not to mention insurances wages etc etc. I work for one such individual and he stands to lose everything if things dont turn a corner real soon.

I wouldnt say you were middle class on 17k a year"

What would you say that is then ? Lower? For a single person paying full rent council tax bills food, very short disposal income from that. I earn not much more and I’m the same. I could work less and probably get equivalent on benefits but I’m lucky enough my kids are older and I can work full time plus more most months.

It’s not easy and if I had a partner to share bills with yes it would be easier 40k coming into my house hold as opposed to 20k.

"The welfare state should be there for everyone when they need it regardless of class. The one good thing about this mess is that some people who have previously not had dealings with the benefits system now realise that living on benefits is not quite the easy life they thought it was."
. Yesterday was my 19th year of joining the DWP under one of it previous names.Yes the benefits system is there to help people get back on their feet when for whatever reason they find themselves out of work.Over the years I have seen people come into a Jobcentre not knowing what to do with regards to what they can claim or if they can claim and I have helped as best as I can.Universal Credit is 6 benefits rolled into one a one cap fits all. However the reality is everyone has a different set of circumstances therefore a one cap fits all doesn’t really work.In time hopefully it will get better with some tweaking but the reality is Universal Credit is here to stay as too much money has been spent on it.

"I would say I’m middle class I’m one of the forgotten key workers.

I wouldnt say you were middle class on 17k a year

What would you say that is then ? Lower? For a single person paying full rent council tax bills food, very short disposal income from that. I earn not much more and I’m the same. I could work less and probably get equivalent on benefits but I’m lucky enough my kids are older and I can work full time plus more most months.

It’s not easy and if I had a partner to share bills with yes it would be easier 40k coming into my house hold as opposed to 20k. "

I suppose you cant really assess someone's class by income alone but 17k?How can people cope on that?

I just think rather than look at benefits they need to ensure it actually pays to work.

I dont know how people cope who have to pay for child care etc

It’s madness because if I work above 17k which I do I get no help (very minimal ) but if I work about 12k I get much more support from government. Lots abuse the system and I don’t blame them in a way. 17-18k for a non skilled worker is an ok wage which most get by on.

I work some weeks 60 hrs and make my money up that way by getting mega pay for weekends and evenings. It’s bloody hard but Id rather do it than rely on others. I do wish at times I had someone to share bills with and rent etc, life would be so much easier.

They need to make it more worthwhile to work which means increased wages.

Who’s they ? I work above minimum wage and many don’t. So if I work maximum of 40 hrs per week minimum wage I’d earn 17k. I work overtime etc which probably pushes mine up to 20k but the I pay tax an NI. I’m a single mum no one to share bills or rent or council tax. Just me. I work my arse off, I could cut my hours and probably get the same as the housing would support my rent. But why should I, I’m able to work my kids aren’t young. There’s so many out there who just think “ oh well it’s not worth it”

The gmnt?Labour propeosed to increase the minimum wage to £10.General levels of pay needs to improve.I read someone that real wages havent improved here since 2015.

I don't have an issue with benefits but they should make it worthwhile for people to go out to work.

Ok I’ve just gone on that universal credit thing to

See what I’d get and put myself as a single mother with one dependant (other is 23) i put myself as earning £400 pcm. It came up as I’d get £1600 every 4 weeks in benefits!!! No wonder people think it’s not worth working! Where did you get your £94 a week figure from?

"I would say I’m middle class I’m one of the forgotten key workers.

Or decreased benefits!

So that's £1600 for you both to live on?"

That’s 24 k!! On benifits. That’s a lot I earn less working 60 hrs

"Am getting a bit sick of reading people asking what am I going to get from the government am losing out how can I live on this.

"

I'm certainly not going to attack the points you mad because to be perfectly honest, I haven't a fucking notion what you're trying to say

"Have you done all those jobs?? Most of the people in "easy jobs" have put in years of hard work and long hours to get where they are. Why don't you do these easy jobs? Probably because you would find the sacrifice too much. Alot easier being a whinger than doing a hard days work.

I did say the selfish greedy and bitter would have a go at me.

Such a sad and narrow minded person. The only one who is selfish and bitter is you I'm afraid. I'm sticking up for all working people who contribute to society. No matter rich or poor skilled or unskilled. It takes all sorts to make a country as great and diverse as ours. So take a look at yourself your sad sad little man.

Am tall and handsome spent the last few years having lots of sex.

Some of it was called child tax credit so not sure. Thing is, and I’m really not being argumentative here. With regards to the original post a lot depends on where you live. This government are giving 80% of salaries to PAYE employees but up to £2500. If I still lived in Manchester I could survive on that. I couldn’t survive on that now where I live. In effect it will be a lot of the what you call higher earners who will be worse off probably. I couldn’t pay the mortgage, bills etc on that amount, whereas if I still lived up north I could. Luckily I’m self employed and it hasn’t affected my business so I’m fortunate in that respect but I’d lose everything if I wasn’t.

"Oh, another them and us, divide and conquer type post. What happened to being in it together and not judging your fellow human?

Those still working who aren't NHS have already been judged as underclass scumbags on here. "

By whom?

All key workers are much appreciated.

As for the underclass, that came about through the benefit system (not sure when though).

I apologise. The £400pcm I put that I was earning was included in that previous figure! It is £1244 every 4 weeks universal credit. Still a lot though.

Or decreased benefits!

Absolutely no way you’d get that

Which?

£1600 "

Sorry. I just commented above. It was £1244. Not £1600

Because loads of people were on the radio the other day saying how can I live on £94 a week

That’s SSP

I'm not an expert I was going by what I heard.

So as a single man with no kids what would I get?

According to Google as a single man with no kids I'd get £320 a month

Im presuming that doesnt include housing benefit but I'm no expert.

I'd struggle to live on that.

I apologise. The £400pcm I put that I was earning was included in that previous figure! It is £1244 every 4 weeks universal credit. Still a lot though. "

£620 a month for 2 people?

So often the case. People who don’t work being better off than those who do. Or should I say too often the case.

Isnt that more about the abysmal levels of pay in this country?

What do you get if you dont work £94 a week?

I feel uneasy blaming other people who are hardly loaded when more deserving targets get off Scot free.Soon as the tories got in They started blaming 'scroungers'."

Why do you think work houses were built?

I did it hypothetically. I just made out I earned £400 a month to see what it came up with. It asked if I got child support etc from other parent and I just left that blank. Was just interested to see.

I’ve always worked say 16 hrs 2 children and got approximately about £8k a year In tax credit an working tax. So add the housing element of approx £40 a week that’s £2k that’s 10k.

I apologise. The £400pcm I put that I was earning was included in that previous figure! It is £1244 every 4 weeks universal credit. Still a lot though.

£620 a month for 2 people?

I don’t know how they work it out. I just put one dependant and her age.

I’ve always worked say 16 hrs 2 children and got approximately about £8k a year In tax credit an working tax. So add the housing element of approx £40 a week that’s £2k that’s 10k. "

Would it depend on location etc? It did ask for my mortgage/rent payments.

"I would say I’m middle class I’m one of the forgotten key workers.

Or decreased benefits!

Because loads of people were on the radio the other day saying how can I live on £94 a week

That’s SSP

I'm not an expert I was going by what I heard.

So as a single man with no kids what would I get?

According to Google as a single man with no kids I'd get £320 a month

"Am getting a bit sick of reading people asking what am I going to get from the government am losing out how can I live on this.

"

Well then. Don't support the middle class. They shall then be forced to continue working to survive. Therefore not staying at home. Therefore maintaining infection levels and as a result extending the lockdown period which will make poor even poorer.

What the conservative government has done very well is to convince the poor that they owe their lot in life to their neighbours who don't pay their share and not the captains of industry who never paid them a fair wage.

For so long as you are boxing at shadows things shall never change.

Or decreased benefits!

Because loads of people were on the radio the other day saying how can I live on £94 a week

That’s SSP

I'm not an expert I was going by what I heard.

So as a single man with no kids what would I get?

Would it depend on location etc? It did ask for my mortgage/rent payments.

Only on council tax. Are you private or council or mortgage? Pm if you want x

Mortgage. I’m not trying to claim I was just interested to see as I was sure it must be more than £94 a week x

What is more than £94? Rent? Wages ? Sorry I’ve scrolled back x

Benefits x

Universal credit single man.no kids £320 a month

£80 a week.

I assume that’s if someone doesn’t work at all. I think it also tops up low salaries. If someone’s not working due to illness/disability then there are other things they can claim also. Like I said I’ve no idea as I’ve always worked. I was just interested to see what it would come up as.

Or decreased benefits!

Because loads of people were on the radio the other day saying how can I live on £94 a week

That’s SSP

I'm not an expert I was going by what I heard.

So as a single man with no kids what would I get?

I dont know..I've never not worked but thats the figure its bringing up.

I'm assuming that's if you dont work.

Disability and that are different I guess?

Yes disability benefits are different and they’re not means tested. "

Yes they are means tested as they are now taken into pip.

New ESA is means tested now as it is part of Universal Credit

Old ESA it depended on if it was income based or contribution based.

PIP is not an out of work benefit and is not means tested

Oh, and there is no child benefit bonus at the moment. That’s a myth.

I totally agree. However. Your PIP payment is means tested on how you are able to work. Is it not ?

No. There’s no means testing of Pip. You can be a millionaire and claim it if you meet the criteria.

There are different levels of PIP depending on the severity your health and disability.

And I find the CSA have A lot to answer for. Say for instance. My friend “Tracy” is in the same boat as me. But her ex husband gives her 2k a month child care. But she still gets exactly the same allowance from the government as it’s not means tested. She uses hers for “pocket money “. Our government is so wrong

That’s what I was trying to say. Surely if your a millionaire you don’t need to claim PIP?? Surely

Don’t blame the government or Tracy for that one.

The reason that rule was changed is because so many non-resident parents don’t pay their child support.

My father was due to pay £64 a week when I was a child. It was included in benefit calculations, but he never paid a penny.

That is why that rule is that way. The people who get 2k a month are far, far fewer than the people who get nothing

That’s not means testing, means tested benefit means they depend on your other income or savings

David Cameron claimed it for his son so millionaire families do claim it

I receive £120 a month csa for 2 kids and have done for 10 years. That amounts to £30 per week. Now bear in mind my kids dad is a director of a multi million pound ltd company. But CSA can’t investigate. So yes everyone else has to pay for his kids. Makes me mad.

Don’t get me wrong, the government should kick the CSA into being fit for purpose

They absolutely shouldn’t count maintenance as income for benefit purposes until such times as it’s fit for purpose

The benefits calculators as about maintenance as some local authorities count it as income when it comes to council tax reductions.

Or decreased benefits!

Because loads of people were on the radio the other day saying how can I live on £94 a week

That’s SSP

I'm not an expert I was going by what I heard.

So as a single man with no kids what would I get?

I dont know..I've never not worked but thats the figure its bringing up.

I'm assuming that's if you dont work.

Disability and that are different I guess?

Yes disability benefits are different and they’re not means tested.

Yes they are means tested as they are now taken into pip.

They’re not means tested. Unless something has changed very recently.

No I’ll kind of agree but they know what’s going in and out of your bank. Otherwise they wouldn’t ask the question “ do you receive maintenance payments “

Maintenance payments are a totally different thing though. I’m talking about disability benefits. They’re not means tested x"

Yes ok I’ll agree. I apologise.

Income based disability benefits are means tested.

Contribution based ESA isn't, but ESA claimed with UC or old style inccome based ESA is absolutely means tested.

Why so ? Are you ok in your own world? That’s fine but don’t be so oblivious.

Tax credits are/were a completely different thing.

I have no experience of them. I only know ESA and PIP as I had to wade through them when my late husband was unwell.

The income based ESA counted my salary, the contribution based one didn't. PIP didn't.

My salary and no kids meant no dealings with tax credits.

No, if you read what I actually said it was the opposite of that.

There was no tax credits while he was claiming ESA because of my salary.

Exactly you need to add the 300 to 400 (depending on area) housing benefit you would get then add another 100 approx discounted off your council tax so a single man over 30 would get i.e approx 700 to 800 universal credit Inc the council tax discount.

Also the lady saying 1600 is not to far away.

I manage a team who work with hard to reach, multiple barrier clients age 30 to 65 most of whom have never done a day's work in thier life. The biggest challenge is because most have a family there benfits per month total package is easily worth 1000s per month.

That's before you add all the extra benefits on top like PIP.

I have families on 30k + per year in benefits on my books. The husband has disability for depression the wife has disability for depression but hers is converted into a brand new car every 2-3 years just add fuel. They claim DLA on each of the children for ADHD and similar. They are seriously experts at it!

They know exactly how to play Doctors, Teachers and the benefits system the ones they fear are social workers and the police!

It's the kids I feel sorry for apart from the 60 inch tvs and Playstations in every room you see on the house visits they never get attention from the parents apart from when they play up and behave badly. Once they are 5, 6 years old they get kicked out onto the streets to run ferral at all hours.

Don't believe me go to a website called turn2us.org and use the benefit calculator and play about with different family examples.

Then look up PIP and child PIP/DLA rates and add a Disability claim onto each member of the household.

Then you will realise the challenge my team has trying to get say the father of such a household to take a min wage warehouse job at tesco cos he's now 50 no qualifications and he has never worked a day in his life so he doesn't really have much choice in the job market.

People need to understand and know what they are talking about before throwing opinions around on this website.

Our benefits system is very generous if you compare it to other countries, including European countries do some research you will be shocked.

I've just come back from South Africa recently you know how much benefits a single able person aged 18 to 60 gets?? Nothing!

As I work for a council I have lots of employers on our books and loads of jobs to offer clients finding the jobs that's easy getting people from our caseloads to take said jobs no that is the real trick.

Now I want to add that the above is a representation of the worst examples of people to who use benefits as a lifestyle choice. It in no way way reflects the vast majority of hard working people whom for various reasons rightly need to access the benefits system before they can get back on their feet workwise or healthwise.

Stay safe

The government's own figures for fraud on disability benefits is 0.5%

So the "fact" that there are millions of people scamming PIP and disability benefits is absolute nonsense and has been debunked by the likes of the Rowntree foundation time and time again.

A very small few may scam it, but the fact is that there are millions of pounds allocated for disability benefits that go unclaimed every year. Again the governments own figures tell you so.

Comments like "a free car" just buy into cliche's. IF someone is viewed by PIP decision makers to be so disabled, physically or mentally, that they cannot make or plan a journey alone and qualify for the higher rate of Mobility PIP they can use that to pay for a mobility car. IT's not free, they pay for it for the money they are entitled (and bear in mind PIP is NOT an out of work benefit)

100% as I said use the benefit calculator at turn2us for a 2 adult 3 children under 16 household. Add up housing benefit, child benefit, Tax credit, 80% council tax discount. Now look up the higher rate for PIP for each of the adults then look up the DLA rate for each child. Add the whole package together.

All I'm saying is we have a very good benefits package compared to most countries on this planet so for people like the guy who didn't know 94 was SSP then thought a single man only gets 320 a month in benefits when that just 1 component of the package.

Sorry it frustrates me especially when in another post he talks about wages going up min wage has been rising relatively quickly in the last few years. In fact min wage has risen 20% in the last 10 years whilst wages above min wage have stagnated and even went back over.

The old a little bit of knowledge is dangerous adage.

According to Google as a single man with no kids I'd get £320 a month

Im presuming that doesnt include housing benefit but I'm no expert.

I'd struggle to live on that.

"The government's own figures for fraud on disability benefits is 0.5%

IT's not free, they pay for it for the money they are entitled (and bear in mind PIP is NOT an out of work benefit)"

Your right but I never said free car I said 1 adults PIP is converted into a car.

Let's just say there's certain estates, pockets of people whom live like the example I laid out. I'm at the coal face so to speak so that 0.5% is still many hundreds of families that make up our projects case loads.

The problem is the small percentage who have abused the system for so long has meant the Tories came along and instead of using a precision hammer to target those abusing the system they took a sledgehammer to it. This has lead to tons of people who are vulnerable, and do need PIP, ESA and a mobility car having it took off them and then they spend a year going through hell with the stress of appeals and tribunals to fight for it back. I know of Cases where within a month of winning a tribunal they get called back for a new medical and so the merry-go-round continues.

80% in my personal experience of PIP and Esa tribunals get over turned. How much does it cost to have the 3 people sometimes made up doctor, benefits expert and judge they have to hear each case.

In our area before covid19 tribunals were now taking a year due to the backlog. The whole process has cost way way more money than had they just awarded the benefits to all applicants and accepted a small percentage will take advantage.

My point was to give an example albiet an extreme end of the spectrum example of the level and volume of benefits our country has available.

I was simply adding the 0.5% to give a figure to the extremeness of your example.

As someone who works in this field you must know that giving extreme examples simply fuels the myth that everyone on disability benefits is a con artist. The “free car” thing comes up on here all the time.

We agree completely on the tribunal thing. There are so many things I could say about that, but people simply wouldn’t believe if it they were told.

16 rooms. 3 independent panel members. At least half had DWP representatives. Year long wait for the appeal. Sitting there for two hours not a single person left complaining that they’d lost.

I was there with someone who at 20 is so disabled they can’t read, can’t write, sometimes know their name, has no sense of time or safety. Yet it got to appeal stage...

Focusing on the tiny number of people who scam a system is what makes it publicly palatable that people like him get called for repeated reviews.

Giving extreme examples as if they are extremely common places simply assists in the divide and conquer. When this pandemic is over that divisive attitude held by government will come back out in force.

This is the time to say “No, a tiny number of people scam, there is in fact far more error than fraud” rather than to highlight those few scammers.

"We will be fine, high earning, choose to work, in a sector unaffected, will even see growth, debt free , investments/pensions hammered but it’s only money there’s much more important things.

Very easy to say when you have enough. People who don’t have enough will be hit hardest, as always because this government ideologically despises poor people. You get what you vote for "

They do despise us usually but benefits have gone up by £20 a week! Not much i know but to us it's like 40 cigs, or 5 bottles of cider.

Seriously though the rent allowance of UC has gone up by £80 a week also.

Bet this gov is gutted after shrinking welfare right down to nothing.

Oh one shitty thing they have done now though is they are able to sanction disabled people so i've got a idea where the cuts will be coming from next.

"I would say I’m middle class I’m one of the forgotten key workers.

So often the case. People who don’t work being better off than those who do. Or should I say too often the case.

Isnt that more about the abysmal levels of pay in this country?

What do you get if you dont work £94 a week?

I feel uneasy blaming other people who are hardly loaded when more deserving targets get off Scot free.Soon as the tories got in They started blaming 'scroungers'.

Why do you think work houses were built?

Cameron's strivers v scivers.

"I think this situation has proved making money doesn't make you worthy we have seen our key workers work there arses off for us non essentials while we sit in fear and they put their lives literally on the line for us be meek and be grateful and don't look down your nose at anyone we are all in this together but some are way more in this than you and don't forget that when this shit is over "

The irony is, with this crisis, individuals in professions that many in society look down upon in regards to status are now vital. The cleaners, supermarket workers & food delivery employees jobs..

The CEO and director are now beneath them all in importance.
