Seen Alistair Campbell on tv earlier and he stated that there are still planes carrying thousands every day to london airports ,which there is no social distancing....then they scatter through the underground. Surely we should stop all but repatriation flights now is it makes a mockery of the police picking on a few getting a little sun or stopping for a minute to catch the breath on a park bench.

I live under the approach to the local airport. Still hearing the occasional plane, but the traffic has really dropped off. Only a few per day - rather than several every hour |

That would make sense...but he stated carrying thousand of passengers per day, so he's either telling porkies or as I said it seems madness if true. And tbh I doubt he'd be telling porkies on national tv... |

most fundamental aspects |
I’d be very surprised if it were thousands of people.
There are still scheduled passenger planes flying but as has been said, most are carrying cargo. Heathrow saw a 143% increase in cargo traffic last week.
One flight that was apparently still showing last week was to Kuala Lumpur. That would have been a pointless journey for anyone not on a Malaysian passport, as no one from outside the country has been permitted in for weeks.

Not sure if it's true but the channel tunnel is still running too. I keep hearing light aircraft late at night.
They should only be open for essential goods and medical reasons.
Also Wuhan is starting opening up. I love the chinese people, but the goverment suck. I say keep that city locked down until the rest of the world can recover. Shutdown all meat market vendors and exports.

I’m just pointing out that scheduled aircraft need not be carrying passengers.

We have a close friend who is a long haul pilot for BA, he has flown once in the past month and that was a repatriation flight. He’s had his wage cut by 50% and is basically “on call” if needed.
So I know 100% BA arnt flying international flights |

Around the 19th/20th March it was estimated that there were around 1 million Britains stranded abroad. That’s a hell of a lot of planes to bring them a

What the fact that there appears to be passenger flights landing here and all the passengers get is advice to self isolate for 14 days and be on your way. Ok if that's not a issue for you... |

yeah... one problem...
define "repatriation" flight....
for example.... lets say there are a fair amount of people at the moment stuck in australia and new zealand
do you want the govt to organise all the flights out from there to the uk... or do you still want them to try and get home lets say on flights via hong kong, or singapore, or dubai/abu dhabi
and thats what is happening!!
its a mixture of both to try and get as many people back as possible....
not every flight can be a direct flight for distance, or operational reasons (commercial flights still try to use as few planes as they can to get back as many people as possible) |

I imagine some of the increase in freight tonnage is accounted for by the lack of long haul passenger flights most of which would be carrying some freight in addition to its passengers.

We have a duty to repatriate our citizens, thus preventing foreign governments having to overload their health services with our people who may catch the virus there and need treatment
Most uk people would prefer tourists here to be in their home land too and some would be angry if they could not get treatment themselves, whilst a sicker tourist did etc.
It's also humane that if someone is at tisk, that we invest effort to remove the risks, especially if they may get to lose their life. Most won't be ill but could easily get so. Returning them whilst ill is much more expensive. After death carries too high a cost, especially for grieving families. Many are stranded for absolutely no fault of their own.
When we stop being a country without humanitarian compassion, we should all give up and live in shame. |

Remember too that even standard passenger flights carry a considerable load of commercial freight, in addition to our baggage, pushchairs etc. It's income that the airlines love and supports the profitability of our flights. That freight still needs to get to/from the uk somehow and pigeons can't handle much. It's obviously faster than sea freight and ideal for time urgent goods.
Most people flying now would face entry restrictions at their destinations and likely can't purchase travel insurance that covers this virus. |

As I said I posted this off the back of what Alistair Campbell said today..he didn't mention repatriation flights...I did as I would have expected a fair few to be them.
But are they all repatriation flights...I dont know. But what should not happen is if they are coming home from all over the world, then travelling through the underground with just the advice to self isolate for 14 days...ffs it's not do-able when you are using public transport from the airport.
That was my questioning
And also posting to see if we have ongoing passenger flights on a regular basis. And judging by some of the posts on this thread it seems we do. |

I watched a local news report from New Zealand about a kiwi arriving from Gatwick who staying in London for sometime, contracting bad case of Covid-19. She said she had generally good health so was surprised to find herself in hospital for breathing difficulties. She claimed to contracted Covid-19 from the poor hygiene in Gatwick where she said noone wore masks or gloves, no hand sanitizer were available. But sounds like to me most of uk take this approach as i rarely see in my area people wearing ppe out and about. No idea if she, herself wore ppe during her journey back to new Zealand. I think she left uk a month ago |

Interesting.
I wonder whether wearing mask is advised in the UK or Europe.
In my current place, during this lockdown, no one is allowed to be out without wearing face mask - you wont be allowed to enter shops or if the police see you, they won't allow you to get our of the car, regardless if you are symptomatic or not.
(maybe this should be under different thread, not sure). |

What's the answer, there's over 300,000 of them coming in from abroad. What do we do, put them in internment camps for 14 days ???
At one point it was over a million british passport holders that somehow managed to get home including myself before the shit hit the fan big time. I wasn't ill or anything. Surely that would have cost a lot of money for nothing. Honestly some keyboard warriors comments on here make me chuckle as to what they are suggesting. |
