Essential items!

Southport / Ellesmere Port

A friend of mine went into a convenience store in Wigan today to buy a newspaper and the woman behind the counter refused to sell it to him because it isn't an "essential item!" - the implication was that he had to purchase an item of food too.

I'd have argued that news is a pretty essential item right now. Some crazy madness happening out there right now.

I guess they should have said it was toilet roll not a newspaper

Probably wouldn't be far off the truth anyway as they're fill of shite

I would of argued that. What is classed as not essential to someone could be clased as essential to someone else. It's rediculous to refuse the sale. I wouldn't shop there again.

'essential' is an adjective, just like these words

pretty

Wealthy

slow

plain

muscular

repulsive

These are subjective, which means it is the individual who decides whether such adjectives apply.

Is it for the shop keeper to decide for your friend whether somebody is 'pretty' or 'plain'? Of course not. Therefore it is not for the shop keeper to decide whether a newspaper is essential for your friend.

Just a bit silly on behalf of the shopkeeper

There's no rules on what you can or can't buy in shops ie anything an "essential" shop sells, you can buy it, within any guidelines set by the store eg only 2 of certain items.

Why are stores advertising easter eggs?

There is a story how a woman at boots had her lipstick removed from her shopping basket.

Please can someone explain how this prevents the spread of COVID-19?

It doesn't! If Boots is allowed to be open, you can buy what the heck you like. There is no Government list of essential items of shopping, just a list of essential retailers.

One question that I'm pondering over, if your fridge packs up and you need a replacement within the hour, where do you get one?

I'd say that was pretty essential, but it's not possible to visit an electrical store to buy one.

*For those who scour the forums to nit pick the posts of others, I am aware you can't plug in a fridge immediately after getting it home. However the 1-4 hour wait is far better than delivery within 2 working days!

"Chocolate bar"

Yes, but, totally essential

"Phone charger"

And then, if you'd been a teenager, literally universe ending catastrophe without it.

So I'd say you were good for essential item shopping .

Thank you.

So what about the advice that we should only shop once a week? Apparently there were people in Swindon waiting outside the superstores beating up people with full trolleys...

So how does one go out once a week but only buy provisions for a couple of days?

Places like AO.com are still trading, you'd have to try and get one online, I'd imagine.

I witnessed an argument between parts dealer and a breakdown recovery service man whose van needed new breakpads. They said he wasn't a key worker.

The parts deliberately people weren't busy or understocked. So why?

Firstly the recovery person might need to help a key worker.

Secondly if that van had caused an accident because of faulty breaks that would be more work for our emergency services.

Again, in theory you can buy what you want, unless shops have restrictions due to the panic buying. We're in isolation and lucky to get an online booking slot fortnightly, so we're just making do. The problem comes when individuals are shopping for multiple households eg friends or family in isolation, as well as their own. Such people might legitimately need more than two packs of loo roll but instead have to either go to multiple shops or go back on different days, which makes a mockery of trying to minimise going out! My brother is now shopping for my disabled pal, who I'd been shopping for before I was ill. He's not been able to get a supermarket slot since I've been in isolation (nearly a week) and still is struggling. He's physically very disabled and can't shop unaided - he'd need a supermarket worker to accompany him to get things off shelves. But because normally his parents do his shopping (in their 70s), he's never used online delivery before and they aren't taking new customer registration! It's a good job my brother a) works for a supermarket but one that doesn't do deliveries and b) is a generous guy and will help my friends!

In my happy place

I went to buy a toaster today as mine broke. But I went to b and m to get it and picked up some bleach, shower gel, and mini eggs.

People were buying garden stuff with their tins, cheese and household goods. All calm.

If that was me I would have kept my money and walked to the next shop. Can small businesses really afford to be that picky about their income at a time like this.

Tried to buy a replacement electric shower today .. found the one I wanted in B&Q... reopened but essential lines on click and collect... tried to order but while it showed 3 on aisle 47 it wasn’t available to click and collect! I called the store who told me there were 7000 essential lines available on click and collect and the shower wasn’t... I then explained that I’d picked an item at random and that I could have clicked and collected 5ltr of jasmine white emulsion..... “We don’t decide what’s essential” was the answer

Some items might be essential for mental health wellbeing. Reading a newspaper keeps someone occupied. The shopkeeper was just chancing it, should have just sold it to him.

Easter eggs aren’t essential to live, they’re unrestricted. The Easter Bunny is needed to cheer up spirits this year.

Trouble is there are no hardset rules set by the government for the retailers, everything is a "guideline" so they are making their own rules up as they go along, preventing browsing is good social distancing, so is allowing people to order online what they need in order to keep them at home

I would have said that I popped in to buy toilet rolls but they didn't have any, hence I politely settle on a newspaper with vital news in instead.

However, I agree if they are open during this very sad time then a sale is a sale. Would they rather be sending all the newspapers back tomorrow.

Stay safe everyone!
