Thank you all, in advance |

I was going to do all of 66 (bearing in mind it has been renumbered in parts) but my friend did not have the time so we only saw bits of it. It's a slow road so allow plenty of time.
I remember pulling off the road in Winslow Arizona (Eagles fans will know) You have gotta see Universal Studios in LA.
66 really ends at an uninspiring cross roads in LA. The Santa Monica pier thing was an advertising ploy to get people to go to the beach. It worked!

" I've heard most of it isn't great there's loads of tv programs on the mother road. Have a look at those and pick out a few hot spots |

We managed long sections of R66 from Chicago to Indianapolis ..it was actually a quiet road and having hired a Dodge Challenger with a Hemi we managed to reach its 146 mph limiter which was awesome but route 66 was underwhelming to be honest |

Yes I guess it is where you stop off and visit on route that can make the difference
We have travelled a lot of America but haven't completed route 66, so 2 weeks time we set off |

We bought our route 66 fridge magnet on Santa Monica pier. Does that mean we have to take it off?
LA was ok. We enjoyed Universal and even got free tickets for the Jay Lenno show. Nice to see some of the things we'd only seen on the movies and TV. But that was pretty much it.
We wouldn't rush back. |

Well that is the whole of route 66 completed with a few extra days to cover monument valley, Las Vegas and other stops.
If anyone wants detailed information on this route from someone who has completed the whole journey then feel free to message me.
Word of advice for anyone travelling to the USA right now, work out your spending budget then double it as prices are crazy high
Whether it be rooms, fuel, food or drink. |

Just some advice we are not doing route 66 but we are doing new York / LA for 3 weeks in October everything is paid for so only fuel and food and spending money is 10 grand enough and looking at around 300 to 400 miles a day is that possible |

300 to 400 per day is what we did. We had a Chevy Camaro but, i would suggest, you will need to travel the interstates to do that distance as Route 66 is a far slower road.
Watch out in the big sky states (Texas, Oaklahoma) for "Bears in the air". In Texas we followed a State Trooper driving at 2mph less that the limit for 124 miles. When he turned off there must have been 400 cars stacked up behind us. Do not overtake State Troopers!! |

Re fridge magnet. Just cross out Route 66 and write Santa Monica. |

My mate set the satnav to no tolls after an embarrassing tripple drive through on one. The nav later told us to turn off the Oaklahoma City interstate.
"In 26 miles turn left" it said. As we turned left it said "In 109 miles ..."
The road was dead straight and there was absolutely nothing on it. We travelled for over 30 minutes at well over 100mph. Much faster than the interstate... |

you wont have to do 300 - 400 miles a day if you are taking 3 weeks, we done it in 16 days around 150 - 200 miles a day
I will look out our route and pass it to you if you wish.
We stayed at higher class hotels mainly Hilton for the quality and points you occur.
Fuel is pretty crazy, around $2.99 in Missouri rising in price the further west you go, Santa Monica is around $6.50 we drove a mid-size Honda SUV averaging 28 mpg
Every state you visit is full of homeless on the streets at night especially if down town.
Food prices are sky high, and dont drink red bull as you will be paying $5 a tin lol.
Santa Monica is also full of homeless and people looking to take your cash.
We got sick of tipping for utter crap service.
We travel the U.S. regular and only done this trip simply to say we have done route 66, I can list a number of far better road drives but if its booked, just enjoy the trip.
Take a detour when you reach Gallup New Mexico and drive to Monument Valley, you can also visit 4-corners at same time
Kingman is crap, travel an hour and half longer and stay in vegas a couple of nights
£10k will cover the trip, we were under $400 in fuel for 3400 miles
self park where possible in hotels as valet parking can be as much as $70 per night in Chicago although I see you are driving from New York.
any further questions just ask away, hope your not flying into Newark airport as its utter crap in the United airlines section

if you are driving a Hertz hire car, there is a device fitted on the screen that takes care of Toll fees, you simply drive through |

It was not Hertz. We had to cough up green backs. |

Just had a further $12 deduction as late toll charges sent to Hertz, it won't break the bank balance though |
