"Less than a week to go and she decides she wants a new outfit. See this been a rush thing lol" it looks like we ordered our outfits too late (online) they are on the slow boat from China so we may need to improvise if we can’t find anything local on Marketplace, typical but I know we will still have lots fun regardless.

"Not us as its nothing to do with wgw...." is it not? I must admit I also thought all the music and events over the weekend were all set up and related to the Whitby Goth Weekend ? Pray tell .
| |||
"Nope, its a bunch of wannabees trying to take over, uts been going on for a few years. The only official wgw events are the market at the leisure centre and the stalls in the brunswick centre, and the djs at the Abbey wharf.." gotcha, I bet not a lot of people know that. So not even Little A and the gathering they pull is in the list of official venues ? I notice Little A had a controversial planning app accepted this year to extend the outdoor/beer garden/conservatory opening hours , it should be good

"It's a long stagger back from the brewery if you've had a few...lol My mate just told me that the brewery is small and it will be outside. "We're going because we love the macabre, the clothing and going to listen to some new music and we've never been before. I know lots of people who like the gothic style but are more in to metal, than goth music Goth isn't just the music, it's the literature, architecture, clothing all sorts of things " Ok but that does not make you/them Goth though. Just means you/they have some Alternative tendencies. As I said though this is Whitby Goth Weekend, not Whitby Alternative Weekend. Bikers seem to go to and some of them dress Goth for the weekend does not make them Goth. I know what Goth is thanks, been on the scene 20+ years. And sadly its no longer Whitby Goth Weekend.
| |||
"So, can bikers not be goths as well? We've been going for nearly 20 years, don't dress full time goth because of our jobs, we're also bikers, but we've supported wgw, and still do, yeah it has changed, like every thing else, it's about accepting that, unfortunately... You've also got people coming in that think they can do it better, then realise they can't!!!" It's changed for the worse. Goths start going to Whitby 1994 because its cheap, out of season and quiet. Local photographers start going to Whitby to take pictures of the goths (not always consensually). Non-goths start going to Whitby in fancy dress to be photographed by the photographers that have come to photograph the goths. Non-goths start coming to Whitby to look at the fancy dressers who have come to be photographed. It's now avalanched out of control. Whitby used to be cheap, out of season and now its anything but.
| |||
"Whitby has never been cheap out of season, its a coastal holiday town that appeals all year round, and we've been in all seasons. It has been the photographers that have turned it into a big circus though, hence the proper goths dissappear into the pubs out of the way during the day.." No, prices were ok 15 years ago. Until about 2011, Halloween weekend wasn't a thing. Most 'pretty postcard towns' are heaving now, as Autumn is a popular time to go away. This was not the case through most of the 2000's.
"We're going because we love the macabre, the clothing and going to listen to some new music and we've never been before. I know lots of people who like the gothic style but are more in to metal, than goth music Goth isn't just the music, it's the literature, architecture, clothing all sorts of things Ok but that does not make you/them Goth though. Bikers seem to go to and some of them dress Goth for the weekend does not make them Goth. I know what Goth is thanks, been on the scene 20+ years. And sadly its no longer Whitby Goth Weekend." That's a real gatekeeper attitude. If you love the goth scene as much as you're trying to make out then why not encourage people rather who might have an interest rather than just come on a forum and rant about it trying to prove how you're more goth than someone else is? I see that you've blocked us on here for some reason. Perhaps because we don't have a shrine to Robert Smith in our house? If you'd like to tell us exactly what we should be doing in your very specific rulebook we'll be sure to adhere before daring to set foot in the town of Whitby
| |||
"I knew, I just knew that you would call me a 'gatekeeper'. Its the same song always sing by similar people. I have been called it before by Goths, weekend Goths and fancy dressers and you know what, good. Some things need gate keeping otherwise you loose them. In the 2000's, many Goth clubs had a dress code. For financial reasons, many clubs dropped this, this lead to an increase in normal coming into the clubs, some of the men would leer inappropriately at the Goth girls and it lead to a few incidents. In the case of Whitby, its turned what was a Goth Music Festival, into a badly dressed, unorganised assembly. It's the reason to why the UK's main Goth Weekend isn't a Goth Weekend anymore and you have to go to Germany now. I mostly blame the Steampunks. They created a false representation that it was about peacocking about in some elaborate costume. Which is actually quite insulting. I never saw what I wore as some 'costume' and I was subjected to a lot abuse and discrimination for it. So I don't appreciate them ridiculing my scene as some costume event. A lot of people I knew felt this way. Anyway, the Steampunks brought photographers, with them more people to spot Goths, which brought more photographers, which then brought bus loads of people, some in fancy dress, which brought more photographers, until its avalanched out of control. The Steampunks have thier own weekend now but the damage has already been done. People no longer know its a Goth Music Festival. Being Goths is about being who you are, all the time, we don't technically need Whitby to be who we are. As it was an extension of what many of us did at home. I never wore anything that I would not do in Whitby. I just saw it as an excuse to see bands, 5 nights of clubs and markets and Goths. That's the difference, many people who go to Whitby would never do that in thier home town. Which is why they went to Whitby, they were worried about ridicule and knew in Whitby they wouldn't stand out. It's called Cosplay. It's a shame they just couldn't go to thier local Comic Con. At least the Germans don't have that annoying trait of trying to join in like some village d*unk at the local fair. They leave them to get on with it. Leipzig just lacks Whitby's charm though." Unfortunately whitby stopped being a goth music festival when the organiser was forced out of the spa. Other parties have tried to make a quick killing out of it by hiking the prices, but they've since realised they can't do it, hence they are only doing the music festival once a year. At least the original organiser is still doing her bit, even if it is back to basics like it used to be. The goth scene in the UK will never be like it was in the late 70s and early 80s, but the older generation will try to keep it going as we remember the beginning..

" I think the organiser was part to blame for loosing the main venue as she became difficult. Some may argue she deserved knocking down back to Earth. The irony is that they are now in a venue that was previously used for fringe events. I supported it as it was the main event, I never liked the bands and the Bram Stoke Film Festival had much better ones. I believe Tomorrows Ghost also has better ones. I miss what it was, 5 days of clubs, markets, all in a lovely old town. It will never be as good. The Goth scene in the Uk has really gone to shit in the last 10 years, clubs closing due to gentrification. My local scene is half the size it was. I always thought there would be more when I got older, not less but there is just so little choice today in most things.

But your attitude is that you don't want any new people? My wife and I have recently become interested in the aesthetic of it, and the music so we are going to goth festival to explore it, but you're so elitist about it and you're the one who is deciding on your mind who is allowed to attend? What qualifies as someone who is allowed to attend in your mind, and why should your opinion be the one that counts? " Most of the people I know who are long term attendees, even the organiser herself don't like the direction its taken. You might be Alternative however there are a lot of people who now go who certainly aren't Goth. Its become a place to just go for normals at Halloween.
