Hi guys

We are thinking of doing the same, and yes looking at lebcoin seems to be a lot to choose from. Does any one know what else is needed ie insurance / french mot etc etc. and also storage places near to cap.

Thanks in advance

Try Gardiennage. There is an excellent one at Bessans, and they will happily deliver and return to/from your pitch. They are getting used to UK caravans now, and have stopped putting the door up against the nearest tree!

Those thinking of buying a van here consider the following:

1. You need to register the van with a French address. Caravans are treated like cars in the UK.

2. Insurance - do not insurer the caravan with an English company as there is no road risk cover.

3. Barca ask ur Spanish car insurance to cover it. They may require you to convert it to Spanish plate.

With regards to service etc - have been trying to find a specialist caravan service to do full gas/fridge/electric checks anyone know one?

All the above is absolutely true. However, I got the feeling that on this thread, people were more interested in having a van for holiday use only, it being stored whilst not on a pitch and being delivered to and collected from the site when required.

In that case all you need is insurance for 'off road use' as the storage guys will have their own insurance for towing.

We got some very cheap insurance from a company suggested to us by the Caravan Club.

Forgot to say that we had details of a Brit who serviced vans all over France, during his holidays.

We'll try to dig out his number

Thanks to both contributors I will check it out. I tried a guy who advertised in the caravan club En Route mag, but he wouldn't come to agde . Having been in the insurance industry & seen claims for gas explosions its worth paying a bit each year for safety.

i'm sure most storage places also sell caravans and must have something simular to trade plates to move stock and /or buy vans .my guess is they will have cover for towing .we have contacted a storage site for confirmation and will post on here .

Interesting thread as we seem to have more trips to Agde each year and beginning to think we ought to get a van and site it there, but we were wondering if any of the static mobile homes ever come up for sale? Or does Rene Oltra make people by new ones?

There are new modules advertised for sale just outside their site but they are from 20,000 euro upwards.

our understanding is there are used mobile homes for sale via Oltra. However, if your wanting a new plot you have to buy a New Mobile from keops (spelling maybe wrong). As of 2014 prices started from 27,000€.

Kheops Universal at Villeneuve Les Beziers to sort the spelling out.

If you can find a site with caravan, static or otherwise for sale, you have to go via Mr Oltra to sort the sale out. We have seen people getting very stung, thinking they have bought a caravan to discover they have not by the rules of Monsieur Oltra

There are also rules for renting a new site and putting a home on it. ( You never own the land by the way) If you have never camped before, you need at least three visits before you are eligible. You then need to go to reception and ask for their list of permanent available sites. We will spot you after that, as you will be the people walking around with two pieces of paper, inspecting various plots. Good Luck.

By the way, there are, as far as we know, only two members on here who are permanent residents on the camp site. We look forward to the views of any others.

Confused.com. How can Mr oltra stop someone selling thier touring caravan.? I think there is confusion here.we are not on about permanent pitches.we are on about us buying a van and pitching it week by week. There is absolutely no way he can stop me going up to someone and buying a van off people.when they take thier van off site to go home.the van can then go anywhere. Including our storage company's place. Fact!

We would suggest that the people from Caerphilly just carry on and do their own thing, as they are now complete experts in buying and storing a French Caravan in France. Leaving aside their social and linguistic failings, we are sure that everyone who has tried to help wishes them the best of luck in their future endeavours.

yes thats all true thanks we phoned the gardienneage and they said there was no problem even without papers.(though we will be buying with papers)their insurance covers it. total towing is less than 50 klm a year.

oltra said they can take anything up to 8 meters. i've been doing a lot of research lol .le boncoin.fr is a very good site a bit like gumtree .

Flights are usually £30/40 from Bristol to beziers bus to site €2.60 then tow both ways buy storage Co € 40 then price of pitch. The pitch varies during the season. But we will save a lot over the years.compared to apartments

You can get a van for around 800 to 1000 in tidy condition with awning cheaper at the end of season.

small vans are €175 per year big twin axle vans are €300 for gardienage then each tow to site is €20.the prices vary but that's the average.x
