I'm sure people do drag caravans in and out, but all I recall seeing there were camper vans of various types.
The road in is seriously hairy, make sure your motor has got some balls and that you are totally confident. It's basically a loose dirt STEEP track for a good mile or so, with a couple of serious hairpins, looks like it possibly gets washed out during the winter months. If you go too fast, you'll probably regret it when you try to stop. Once you leave the main tarmac road, you ARE going all the way down - even if you decide you have got the directions wrong and it looks like something from The Hills Have Eyes or the Manson Family retreat.
Check it out on Google Earth, though the marker is somewhere on the hill for some reason. You'll see the road nearby.
Put it this way, I've ridden my motorbike off-road all over the world and that road gave me a twitch or two (but no, I didn't drop it, on the way in or out, Yay me!!)
The site itself is dark and cool till the sun gets onto it, the river is fantastic and the scenery wonderful and peaceful.
Once the sun starts to set, the quiet starts to border ever-so-slightly on the gloomy.
I had a visit from wild boar in the middle of the night as I lay in my hammock, which was great. Not so welcome were other two-legged creatures, but that's because I don't like waking upon hearing a twig snap, wondering who the fuck is sneaking about, immediately going into Rambo mode and grabbing my Ka-bar. Anyone who doesn't announce themselves as they approach, yet can see in that pitch black wood without a torch isn't a friendly neighbour coming to bring a nice cup of tea, in my experience!
I didn't have any problems, no-one bothered me, but I had the distinct impression people were about who weren't legit campers. I don't know the locale, but I think they rely on the remote location rather than a nice secure fence. It's not the kind of place you can see the boundary of the site. That,to me, puts me on edge, knowing how any location with a reputation for naughty goings-on will attract mouth-breathers from miles around with their dicks in their hands, looking for action.
I found the place to be OK, but of course, being a single chap, got royally fleeced for the privilege of sleeping with one eye open. Make sure you stock up on supplies, you don't want to be held up by bandits in the site shop either.
Maybe it was just the end of the season, but no-one seemed to be socialising, people were definitely keeping themselves to themselves and were hardly able to respond to a cheery good morning wave, let alone talk about the weather(and the Ka-bar was safely stowed by then!)
It seems to be popular with gay men and "bohemian" types - hand-painted VW campers fit in just great.
Of course, as a couple, your experience may be different to mine. Certainly worth a look in, just for the scenery, if you dare to tackle the access road.
