near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack! |
I`ve stayed in a few hotels since I`ve been on the scene and I`ve been in some worth staying in again and some I would avoid like the plague! This is my views:-
Jury`s Inn, Plymouth - Horrible! No parking, overlooked by the shops across the road if you`re in a room at the front, Used by coach trips so breakfast can bedlam! But OK for the city centre and the Barbican.
Comfort Hotel, Plymouth - Horrible! Worn out, tatty building which is suffering from concrete cancer. Threadbare carpets, poor decoration, inedible breakfast and a pig to find. Slightly further out from the city centre. Good points are it`s cheap but it needs to be, good parking and great views across Plymouth Sound if you have the right rooms.
Copthorne Hotel Plymouth - My choice of hotel when staying in Plymouth. Parking is limited, chargable if you use the underground car park and the building is dated. The television in the rooms need upgrading (may have now been done) and there`s no free Wi-Fi (may also have been sorted by now). But it`s a former 4* downgraded to 3* due to being "dated". Great buffet breakfast. Easy walking distance from the railway station and right on the end of the main shopping precinct. A bit pricier than most but I think it`s worth it.
Premier Inne Walsall - If you cant stay at Chams then this is the closest hotel. Free parking outside and good breakfast in the pub next door the next day! Not far from Jn 10 of the M6. A good `un!
Also good for Chams is
Quality Inn Express Walsall - Also just off the M6 at Jn 10 but just a little further away than the previous listing. Breakfast is more minimal but you can get a hot one at least! Good free parking! A bit pricier than the Premier but a good choice.
Travelodge Hatfield Central - Good road access and a short taxi ride away from the East Coast mainline station of Hatfield. Has it`s own bar and resteraunt. Reasoable parking. Shopping area a short walk away. Rooms are the usual Travelodge standard.
Travelodge Mansfield - Badly understaffed! Arrived early to find no-one on reception so couldn`t check in. Only when it was the start on check in time did anyone turn up to the desk only to find a whole gaggle of people waiting including two ladies who had already checked in the previous day but could not get back to their room because the door was locked! Adequate parking and food next door in the Ben and Gerrys
Will add more as I think of them. |

I like the bristol hotel in bristol. Really comfortable, car park, great breakfast and close to shopping and bars.
Stayed in many premier inns and never had a bad experience.
Ibis hotels are worse than travel lodge but twice as expensive.
Jurys Birmingham loved it.
Queens hotel Brighton lovely. Pricey but worth it. On the sea front massive room.
Thistle Brighton really good too.
Jurys Brighton good but a little out of the way.

Avoid Travelodges at all cost!
Dirty, dated, rude staff and no toiletries or breakfasts.
Premier Inn are much better as are Holiday Inn Express.
I travel with work a lot, I tend to go for independent hotels if in a large town as there are some gems to be found.

Jury's Edinburgh- good hotel in a great location, right in city centre.
Future Inn - Cardiff -great for Cardiff Bay.....but not as wonderful as St David's, best hotel ever!
As for Jury's Plymouth...ask for top floor overlooking Barbican. Great views and no noise. Can't guarantee what fun you will have....if it was as good as mine ....truly exceptional! |

Palce Hotel Manchester. Formally the old Refuge Insurance building. Fantastic foyer and a room layout that rminds you of walking around Chams! The room I had was huge - TWO double beds and a bathroom that was as big as the average Travelodge room! Look at my profile pics if you don`t believe me! It`s a stone`s throw away from Oxford Road station but not that far from Piccadilly that a walk wouldn`t suffice! Parking is the only bugbear having to use the nearby NCP. Breakfast is a bit average though.
A good choice for a bit of fun! |

Etap - only in a pinch.
Rooms are tiny, they do sleep 3 but its a bunk bed with a double underneath and a single top bunk.
They only let three people in a room at a time and are vigilant!
In Sheffield the Garrison is good. Motel style rooms accessed from outside (no need to pass reception) and only £55 including breakfast. |
