No, not in the slightest, running a website of this sort with this many members takes time and effort, as well as other running costs, so should therefore not be free.
Also having a cost is more off-putting to fake profile users and shows people with genuine interests in the scenes that this website caters for. |

Anyone meeting right now are complete idiots, but besides that, unless you walk to a meet, it’s going to cost money in fuel, fab is only £5 a month FFS, so I really can’t see how that’s a valid argument.
Fab members who meet, deserve to be outed ,most would think twice if they knew there’s a chance their families and friends could find out what they’re upto. |

i think parking on the street and in town centres especially should be free, we've paid our road tax they want us to shop in town how should we have to pay cmon |

I actually think it’s very good value for money
Far better run than many other sites that charge way more!!
Plus it’s actually cheaper if you pay yearly, but I advise you pay the fiver and see what you think |

Indeed. Call it £30 a year, assume 1/5 users pay for it, and assume there's 5x the number of online users in total. That's roughly 100k users, which would be around 20,000 supporters. Assume that's way over the top and half it to be sure, that's £300,000 per year, excluding revenue from advertising.
As far as I know there's no paid staff - it's all volunteers, so for all intents and purposes it's a one man band. I don't think there's a dev team either, and from what I've seen over the past few years not much active development either.
So then, the biggest cost will be hosting the site, which will absolutely not be cheap when you have to account for 20k+ concurrent users. That'll need multiple webservers, a load balancer, database servers, and hopefully cache servers as well.
My client is a company that serves similar numbers, sometimes higher, though with fewer actions performed as part of their journey, and they scale between 6 and 10 webservers, 4 database servers, and 3 cache servers. Obviously I can't divulge the costs, but I priced it up on DigitalOcean earlier and it's thousands of pounds every month as a very conservative estimate.
So no. No it should absolutely not be free. |
