I think when people reach a certain age, say 70 they should be given the choice of euthanasia. I'd never like to live longer than that. What age do you think qualifies? No offence to anyone who disagrees with me.

You say that now but i think at 70, you'll be happy with kids, grandkids and just hoping you're about for as many of the important days as you can for them.

I do agree with euthanasia for terminal illness. We do the humane thing and put animals in pain down. We, as homans, should have the choice not to be in pain anymore.

no my hubbys 70 and is fitter than what i am, and im 20 years younger than him. i do agree that we should all be given the choice of euthanasia when we want to though. you also see some people in their eighties they dont look that old and they are still fit and with all their facaulties.

I am just thinking of several people I personally know over the age of 90 who are mentally and physically fit and more active than many people half their age. Uli it's a pretty good idea. I'm glad you said 'choice' though as there are a great many people of seventy plus who we simply need on the planet a little longer.

I'd like to have the choice to die peacefully instead of being kept alive by Doctors whose hands are forced by well intentioned societies whilst my body slowly rotted and crumbled while i was still living in it.

Everyone is different. Seventy would be a bit young for me but a bit old for others. Yeah ... seventy...... go on..... i'll make my first choice then.

i think the reason this thread is in bad taste to some people is they have people fighting to stay alive who r much older and they want to live. i understand where you are coming from but my grandmother is 91 can do everything for herself and has more brains than anyone i know. she would laugh at you if you asked her to die and say why would i, she sees my children has great great grandchildren who she watches as part of a rota so her mum can work we would all be lost without her. that is why your thread is slightly upseting for people

I feel what you are saying Uli. I went through it with my dad for years. My freind is going through it with her mother now. Both were in mid eighties. They have NO quality of life and fortunes are being spent on operations and keeping them alive when they just don't want it.

I reckon I will be about eighty five when i want to go. Maybe earlier.

So with the current retirement age rapidly rising, you may not even have retired, yet alone had any time for yourself, apart from the odd holiday.

There's always the chance of euthanasia, it's just not in the UK atm, meaning there's elsewhere. Think it will come, and those with terrible medical conditions should have the option.

I quite agree with you - and i think it is more about fear of becoming old, being less desirable, less capable, less popular etc. And there I feel there are so many riches in later life (admittedly not for everybody but then some people are unfortunate throughout their entire life) that I believe ageing equals maturing and that equals another, not necessarily less happy part of life.

My dad is 74 and he's still out on his bike every weekend. He's a bit of a hells angel, he's fitter than I am, and is probably more social and active too...

the only thing is starting to go is his memory, if that went completely he would probably accept euthanasia if it was available, but by that time it would be the power of attorney of his family, and we could never do it!

Trouble is, there are some families would, given the opportunity, to get their hands on the inheritance early. Whether that was the wish of the patient or not. Which is why euthanasia could never work.

I would like to be able to choose when to end my life.

When I can no longer eat and enjoy food orally, then it is probably the time for me to go, as food forms a big part of life's enjoyment for me.

Why does there have to be an ahe for it? I work with disabled people and I some times think if I was in the state of some I would want to be able to kill myself. I know some people that are running around at 80 like they are in their 40's. It just all depemds on the person and their situation.

Anyone has the choice to sign a non-resuss form that is as near to this as you can get at the moment.

I agree though that this should be an option for people who are living in pain but it would need to be restricted to an option taken only by the person themselves.

I think if at the age of 70 i had lost the ability to feed myself, recognise my family and wipe my own arse i would want to be dead, and would merrily throw myself off a cliff.

So yes, why not give people a choice if they want. A living will if you had a degenerative disease, where if you reached a certain point, if you said i dont want to live, i wish to die, where you would be assisted.

Well, when you mature a little, maybe get a wife, have children, have grandchildren who will no doubt love you and you will love them, please give me a call when you reach 70 and I will take your life for you. Your wife and children and grandchildren will be so happy to know that you'd rather die than spend any more if your life loving them. Your hypothetical lack of consideration for others is shocking to us. If you want to die at 70, stay single and don't have children. Your attitude along along with yourself will not be missed. In fact, we think 30 is old enough for euthanasia in your case.

I would not see it as a disease (or is it catching?) Yes, it is very hard on loved ones (my mam has it) but it could be seen as a blessing for those who have it.

Although my mam cannot get around anymore (she was a very very active woman) she still thinks she has done things, or was too tired to do things and often apologises cos she has nothing to give us as she was too busy to get to the shops (where she walked by the way)!

In the end if you want to kill ypurself you will find a way. I have had a few friends that have killed themselve because of depression. So in the end it all doesn't matter unless you can't do it yourself

I think anyone of right mind should have the choice of euthanasia regardless of age. I know I have already stipulated that I don't wish to be resuscitated or artificially kept alive. I've made that decision so my children don't have to worry about 'pulling the plug' if it comes to it.

"I think when people reach a certain age, say 70 they should be given the choice of euthanasia. I'd never like to live longer than that. What age do you think qualifies? No offence to anyone who disagrees with me. "

I think all 25 year olds who say 'dude' should be sent to hard labour camps. But no offence meant.

I think all people who don't like twenty five year olds using the word dude should have their fingers nails pulled out with pliers.

"Well, when you mature a little, maybe get a wife, have children, have grandchildren who will no doubt love you and you will love them, please give me a call when you reach 70 and I will take your life for you.

"

That was quite a nasty response really to a question that I put forward. It was just asking for other peoples opinions. With an attitude like that maybe some families should actually be able to decide.

If a choice is to be offered as to whether someone wants to live or die then it should be offered across the board irrespective of age. By putting a 70+ age restriction on it you are basically telling people of that age that they are no longer useful and can check out if they want to.

Personally, I believe ALL life to be sacrosanct and everyone should be kept alive if they don't want to die, if it's medically possible.

Bet you change your mind when you get to that age - the elderly still have so much to offer"

I agree, its only your outer shell that changes, your still the same person as you were in your 40s 50s, I only know this as ive asked people that age!! B.x

Can you clarify as to whether that choice is offered automatically when someone hits 70, or only if that person asks for it?

I love my family and i wouldnt put them through the heartache of telling them i wanted to die!....how would young children be able to rationalise that?....in fact dont answer...you obviously know this guy to know 'he DOES love family' (although where this is stated ,only you must know)
