It can vary from individual to individual - for some it's a deeply symbolic thing that's as significant to the person wearing it and the one who gave it as a wedding ring - for others it's purely a symbol of submission during a given scene or moment in time.
For others still it's meaningless and something to be taken on and off at will.

It is the deeper structure of symbolism I’m interested in, not the collar.
