We will never move to tablets and phones only, typing is far faster on a real keyboard. Hate using a phone to send messages or use the forum here as it's so slow. |

Quite right can’t beat a proper keyboard to send emails etc and chatting in the chat rooms on a laptop |

Being a software engineer Desktop and Laptop are still essential for what I do.
iPad and smartphone are essential bits of tech and when i travel i have both to hand, but nothing replaces Desktop/Laptop power and Operating Systems, they all just compliment each other. |

If you are just flicking through FAB then a phone is probably all you need but there are a billion things that you can't do with a mobile phone.
Just in my interest . . .
- FTP.
- Full Website building and maintenance.
- Photo-processing (no not just the occasional filter lol)
- Company accounts.
- Update your car satnav.
- Graphic Design.
- High end gaming.
- Professional Movie editing.
- Database Processing.
- Full Office Level Word Processing.
- Digital Pen and Ink.
- Vinyl T-Shirt Processing and Design.
- Any Serious Astronomy.
- . . .
Nope. The Mobile phone isn't there quite yet.

Desktops are too multi purpose and can be made very well so its doubtful, tablets and phones are still going to get much better no doubt about that and some tasks will definitely be delegated to them but PCs and Laptops are just too useful |

I don't think it's true that laptops are obsolete in most households. For editing documents and photos no tablet or phone will ever be better than the combo of a large screen and keyboard. Desktops on the other hand are probably in decline, except for gamers, simply because they're not mobile and take up more space. Love my laptop! |

Laptop always to hand for anything involved on the net like banking, booking holidays or anything important. Much better if your shopping also with multiple pages open.
Gaming is still a big thing and serious gamers will have high end PC built, our daughter has had a desktop setup for a while, helping her no end with education, learning the way around the net, keeping in touch with her school friends, she is getting more involved with gaming while most of her friends play on there tablets and the graphics and screen play are terrible, she is playing the same online and full graphics, large curved screen with still able to Social with her friends.
That's our take on laptop desktop, be a while before there gone. |

I use a desktop for producing music, writing lyrics, stories. I play games and use it as my tv as I don't watch terrestrial or sky/virgin etc.
Yes, phones/tablets etc have the same functions but desktops are superior for many reasons. |

"Remember when you used to have a computer desk in your home with a tower for your desktop, mouse and keyboard? "
I find it odd than in many offices in the UK people still “sit” even when being given the offer of standing desk or risers , if you’re offered and refuse there no claim anymore ... in other countries we often dint get the choice anymore , you stand |

I find it odd people have a desk and are expected to turn up at an office for set times... in an age when you’re never turned off due to work e-mails and the ability to work from anywhere... give people a chance? |

It is going to be a while yet before laptops are replaced by portable devices.
I love using my laptop to edit my photos, play the odd games (mainly Final Fantasy ) and watch movies.
I will be looking forward to the day mobile devices can help me do the things I do on my laptop quite easily... |

Hmm, standing all day at a desk with arthritis in the knee and sciatica, yep that would be really useful, |

Never replace my desktop except with another, try editing portraits on a ipad or even a laptop, screen estate is a big positive, as is a good graphics card fast processor loads of memory and about 12 terabytes of disk space. |

Nope an tablet will never have the computing power or speed of a laptop let alone a desktop.
I do a lot of picture editing and it’s a nightmare doing it on a iPad pro compared to my MacBook. |

For basic web browsing a Tab is fine, but I find them limited, so for anything more I always use my lappy.
My kids both have tablets gathering dust on a shelf, they are always using their laptops, while watching youtube on their phone with something else on their TV..... and who said kids can't multitask. |

This
Nearly always use laptop on here.
Some of the longer posts I do in the forum would take me a week to type on a tablet or phone. |

I think that's a very sweeping statement that in my opinion is far from being true just yet.
I work from a laptop daily and use a PC daily as well. As others have said phones and tablets are fine for browsing but as soon as you want to do anything like work or gaming they don't cut it. |

Laptop every day. Wouldn't be without one. Probably usurped the traditional desktop pc these days but couldn't go to just using tablets and phones. The flexibility and ease of use of the laptop means it can probably never be properly superseded by the smaller devices. Thought I saw an article a week or so back that suggested there was actually a resurgence in laptops and PCs...
As others have said though, it is partly horses for courses. Agree that a tablet or phone is ideal for browsing while sat in front of the telly or on a bus or train or plane etc. But for real work, nope. |

Well, at the moment out of all currently available input methods typing is far faster than anything else so It seems doubtful that we'd use anything else.
The only way that I could go faster would be through having a mind control interface to a computer and that would be a hard no as I wouldn't want to be using slack or skype with work colleagues and suddenly get distracted with naughty thoughts. |

For everyday web browsing, emails and similar apps then it’s the iPad for me every time, it’s so handy and it’s instantly on and ready, no need to boot up etc but there are some things you just can’t do on a tablet like photo editing, booking complex holidays, even a Moonpig card needs to be on a PC/laptop (for me anyway) so basically we need both |

Now this is interesting and I am in both camps.
At home very rarely use laptop even tablet has become obsolete with the Niger screen phones.
However at work we’re we have had introduction of tablets I much prefer desk top and wish we had got laptops instead of tablets which are totally shite for the job. |

Don’t think laptops and desktops will become obsolete anytime soon. I use a desktop pc at home mainly for gaming. Also some things are easier to do on a desktop or laptop pc due to having a physical keyboard or multiple monitors. |
