When you send the thanks but no thanks message and the person replies that its a shame.....who is it a shame for?

There are loads of people on here that a person can make a connection with so why is it a shame when one person says no.

Is one reading too much into a simple reply?

I think it’s just a way of them saying they were interested and are disappointed that you’re not. Take it as a compliment.
