Over the years on and off here the thing that still fined the hardest to understand is the social class attitude of so many on here.

If I see well educated this means uppercase

Professional this means middleclass.

Is it just me that thinks this is a sad state of the UK in this day and age.

Plus some well most of the biggest snobs on here are not very good looking at all or that bright

Well educated really doesn't mean upper class.

I think that much like people like tall folk or short, fat, slim or average, some people like those who they think of as similar to them (professional) and that's okay. As long as they aren't offensive about others, if that's who they want to meet, fair play to them.

Will admit we use professional and are what you would call middle class. We have no problems meeting others, however we like to meet and have a social in nice restaurants. And some have felt really uncomfortable in those restaurants. When people can’t relax the play is terrible. So normally we like to meet people similar to ourselves.

We love it when someone describes themselves as being professional people

1. Quite a few of them incorrectly spell Professional (usually 2 F's)

2. Are they saying they are Professional at being a person.

It used to mean

It’s a more ‘classy’ thing which is perceptive.

You can be classy regardless of wealth and education.

People are allowed to like what they like, dislike what they like, set whatever standards they like and ‘swing’ in whatever way enhances their life. We are well educated people with good jobs that we have worked hard to get and succeed at. We would never put anyone down but we set standards that work for us and are damn unapologetic about it. That doesn’t make us any kind of ‘class’ or snobs, it makes us people living this lifestyle the way we want. As long as we aren’t derogatory to anyone it shouldn’t really matter.

I suggest you get over it OP.... do what you want with whoever you want in whatever way you want...

I think part of the issue is that Fab is both a reflection of society but also quite small and the usual filters we find to keep ourselves in our class bubble, where we live, the jobs we do, who we hang out with, are out the window. It is part of what I like about Fab, but here and there you do see snobbery.

Dont really care how people think of me, I was born and brought up on a council estate, didnt do too well at School but got a very good job, worked hard and put away into a pension as well as other savings from an early age.

Have just retired and can live well until my private pension matures at 55

regardless of how people may look or appear, treat with respect and be polite,

People’s intelligence and ability to hold interesting conversations isn’t based on where they are in the class and economic structure. I have had brilliant conversations about philosophy, culture and politics with farm labourers, care assistants and posties. I have talked to solicitors and architects who struggle to say anything interesting at all.

Being wealthy does not portray your class...

Your class is defined by your attitude and attributes, how you carry yourself.

I have two degrees, yet I come from a working class background. I worked hard at my education

I raised my son on a council house estate, he went to University and is now living in Edinburgh working directly with one of the most prestigious names in the gaming industry as a scripter.

He dresses like a hipster and speaks eloquently and carries himself with confidence, looks far removed from a council housing estate as you can get.

So no, class is something you either have, or you don't regardless of background and bank balance.

And it is not only the wealthy who can carve out prestigious careers. That comes from education, sheer grit and determination.

Not that I think this is particularly important, I recently had to do a study on this. The London school of Economics published this recently where they now recognise seven class levels of society. There is a calculator you can play with. I have a couple of degrees, a few post grad certificates and diplomas, and my profession is one that allows me to sign the back of your passport photos should the situation ever call for it.

I'm from an unashamedly working class background, so I don't know what Fab class that would put me into!

One of my favourite FBs left school at 16 to take a minimum wage job in a bank, later moving onto a call centre.

He was smart as a whip, and as the kids say "woke" to an extent that put me to shame.

He really helped me to question my own values and to find more balance in my life when I desperately needed it and I feel blessed to have known him.

I'm not concerned with someone's qualifications or their profession. I am interested in their intelligence, eloquence, imagination and thoughtfulness, and that comes across (or more frequently the lack of it comes across) in messages.

I am as certain as I can be that ALL societies have class divisions. Modern Liberalism , ML's. have decided that this ought not to be so.

ML's have also decided that diverity is advantageous when all who look honestly will see that this is not so.

The UK has this odd class division based very largely on speaking voice. It is not easy to be sure whether other socieies have such a division. You have to speak the language to be sure !

Part of what makes is the ice breakers is our hive mind understanding that as kids of working class parents, even though we are both now professionals, we are still the same working class kids... I've sat down for foòd with heads of state and the like, but I'm a working class kid. For some people on here I have to explain - class is a state of mind, not the numbers on your p60 or the letters after your name....

And plenty of stupid wealthy people.

Some of the poorest can be snobs in ways that don't involve money.

Class can be defined in so many ways. Profession. Income. Culture. Educaction.

Probably spot on with this. Nowadays, a lot of the "Social Class" is probably more related to individuals behaviour/mannerism more than anything.

I don't live in the UK so I don't understand the classist society you have. In Ireland, I think class might be defined by education,... which often determines what sort of job you have, how much you earn, where you live etc. And of course most of us like to socialise with "people like us".

I'm an educated man, with a number of careers behind me, with a vocational profession, a socialist, and grew up in poverty. I've no idea what class I would be slotted into if I lived in UK.

I just like good people, who are honest, true to themselves and can make me giggle. I'm not looking for a relationship, I'm looking for NSA sex, so if I fancy somebody, they make me laugh and seem like a decent person, then I don't care if they are a cleaner or a barrister.

We've been on Fab since it's inception and I've never seen any nastiness regarding social class. There's occasional snobbery, grammar nazi's and smart arses but nothing hurtful and condescending.

Where class is concerned though, it's not straightforward. I've known many a person fall from grace and lose everything, finding themselves working 12 hour security shifts and living hand to mouth. Similarly, I've known people come from nothing, worked hard, engaged a shed load of self belief and become very successful, enjoying a good life. Yes, people from certain classes can display stereotypical behaviours but it's not an exact science and too many presumptions can be made.

We are in Liverpool where some of the hardest working people are also the poorest people, but would give you the shirt off their backs if you needed it. THIS is what I mean by good people and is far more attractive to me than someone with a Cambridge education, speaks the Queens English and has a good tailor!

1. Quite a few of them incorrectly spell Professional (usually 2 F's)

2. Are they saying they are Professional at being a person.

It used to mean

To be honest, I've never seen that definition. As far as I'm concerned a profession is something you attain through university education and registering with a professional board (who will have a code of conduct).

I can correlate the two definitions but I'm being pedantic.

"I just like good people, who are honest, true to themselves and can make me giggle. I'm not looking for a relationship, I'm looking for NSA sex, so if I fancy somebody, they make me laugh and seem like a decent person, then I don't care if they are a cleaner or a barrister.

We've been on Fab since it's inception and I've never seen any nastiness regarding social class. There's occasional snobbery, grammar nazi's and smart arses but nothing hurtful and condescending.

I'm educated, and educate others.

Funnily enough, most of the people I've met who wanted to talk about benefits, botox and barking dogs have been those who own businesses and consider their taste in wine important....

My wine cellar and collection is very important to me...

Everyone should know one good book, one artist and one composer..

I enjoy good food, wine and company. We are all different..

I've tasted decent wine. It's just wine and ultimately of little consequence.

Honestly, I couldn't give a shit what books, composers or artists other people know - it doesn't make their life experiences any more or less valid.

I find plenty of interesting things to discuss with the "uneducated" but less with those who think that getting a certificate for reading some books/papers makes them somehow "better" than others.

They really aren't. Just because you've got a bachelor's degree, doesn't mean you aren't a cliche or a bore.

In agreement on that one. I like to mix with people of my ilk. I am sure nobody would deny me that simple pleasure

I've marked enough dissertations for know that just because you've got a degree, it doesn't mean that you've ever had an original thought....

Also, gogglebox is the ultimate in the dumbing down of society. A programme where we watch other people as they watch telly?

It is OK to enjoy a programme where you can switch off your brain and have a laugh, especially if you have a job wherein you have to keep alert, engage the neurons and be responsible, in many cases, for the lives of others.

Anyone seen In Bruges? There's going to be a war between the whites and the blacks.... Reminds me of that for some reason.

No wars to be had. Educated from working and vica versa. Just need to look hard enough or ask the question. People often presume I'm posh just because I'm educated to a half decent standard.

Anyway... Surely the most intelligent person would be the one who realises there is no difference between the classes there is only difference betwwen the person

Good topic though! Saw they've recently added it to Netflix so had to rewatch it! Such a slow burner made by really strong acting perfomances! Literally one of my fav movies ever. Think it's Peter Dinklage in that scene as well.

Oh and just to clarify if there is a class war I'm in with the working class...

What should be remembered is that any categorising/labelling is simply a short cut in providing info of people who fit into those groups :

A professional - someone who adheres to a code of conduct and has degree level education.

Upper class - a member of aristocracy

Yeah it's a really good movie! Watched it the other week and was impressed.

The guard and six shooter are also by the same director. I recommend both if you've not seen. The Guard has Brendan Gleeson in it again as well
