Same with girls.

I have mixed feelings about being called a girl it can be acceptable or patronising depending on circumstance.

Possibly same with lad

Yes absolutely, although my late Nan called me it but that is different. From a potential sex partner it is a big turn off!

We have ‘lads’ weekends away on dive trips etc. Most of us are over 40!

What should we say, Man weekend away?

Out of interest.. what aspects of appearance and manner do you think quantifies being a lad?

It's all subjective of course - but I hear lad and think cheeky, youthful, attractive, masculine... *shrug*

To me I think of ‘jack-the-lad’, that is a very cheeky and confident persona

Seeing as I never go to parties, that will have to remain one of life's great unknowns.

In the NE, the use of lads and lasses has no link to age. You're a lad or a lass from birth 'til the day that you die. The big boss tried to stop the use of what she thought was 'sexist and demeaning language' but had to back down as it was her ignorance of the dialect. It's a very inclusive language, the NE dialect.
