Some people use it to describe their occupation.Some others do because they think it gives them a head start in the attraction game. Frequently it is misspelt which I find amusing.

It’s code for works in an office (probably in a suit) in that description. In theory they’ve studied specifically for the job so there’s possibly a mild hint of class snobbery implied.

"professional" has long been used in dating and contact ads to mean someone who has a profession. It usually means someone wants to meet people who work, and in jobs that are not manual labour.

The dictionary definition states "professional" relates to work that requires special training or education. As that encompasses a wide variety of jobs, I believe the controversy comes from people not actually stating what they want by using the word 'professional'.

Either it means a job the you need a specific degree for ie doctor/lawyer or specific training/education for

Or it can mean that your paid to do a sport/hobby type job ie professional sportsman as opposed to amateur (not paid) sportsman

Sometimes we like to have a social at a nice restaurant or similar and have met people who felt very uncomfortable in that situation. It’s a little heads up for everyone. It’s not people thinking they are better than anyone else. It’s people with a different lifestyle and just wanting people to feel relaxed, as when relaxed the fun is better.
