I've been a wanker for many years but I find that the skin where it attaches to the head of my dick has become very thin and makes wanking painful. I use baby oil to make it less likely to split and bleed. Am I just getting old?

I don't know the reason but until you can get to see your GP about it use something that has liquid paraffin in it rather than baby oil. Double base cream for instance

Best see your GP - that piece of skin you described is called "frenulum".
