Something happened a few weeks ago that made me think: it's also something that happens on every thread on here and it got me thinking over a bottle and half of SA red Merlot lastnight.
Why do we value the opinions of strangers more than the people who love us?
Is it because you know that they are telling you the truth. What would they gain from lying? Friends and family can sit on the fence for fear of hurting your feelings and having to pick up the pieces whereas, a stranger can say whatever they like and not have to worry about how they are perceived as they will never meet you again.
Not every stranger is a polite person; there are some people who will lie in order to gain a reaction, or chance of getting in their bed, and friends tell friends compliments to massage their egos and give them little boosts.
We all do it, friends tell us things and it goes in one ear and out the other, a stranger says the same thing and you take note, maybe blush, smile, straighten up with more confidence, go and check the mirror or hide and never wear that item again.
So why do we value strangers response more than friends?

No stranger has ever commented negatively on something I was wearing. |

Before someone can insult me first I must value their opinion , for example I wouldn’t listen to any bad comments from A stranger but if sat my mum said the same thing, it may sink in. |

We all want to be liked loved desired that's human nature,
As for the compliments on this site anyway people will blow smoke up your arse, par for the course in some cases ie "you are the best looking couple on fab" which we are cough cough
And of course the negative stuff ie a post on the forum earlier stating some ladys and couples are fat and ugly, so why should they have criteria,
Its all bullshit don't listen to any of it, the loved ones in your life and their opinions are all that matters |

I think a stranger in the street and a stranger on a sex site can not be equated together when looking at comments both positive and negative as there is very clearly an agenda, assumed rightly or wrongly and I say that because not everyone on here speaks with same forked tongue, but it is often assumed based upon experience or constant hearsay. |

I don't.
However, sometimes people you know might not feel able to be totally honest. It's easier to give honest answers online.

Completely agree with you on this.
Ultimately, we would expect friends, partners and families to tell us the truth and while they may do this.
I think it takes someone incredibly confident and self-assured to be able to openly and honestly say that they don’t value the positive opinion of a stranger though and when reading through forums, it does strike me that most apart from the obvious regular poster do value other fabbers affirmation. |

Is this then why many seem to look for and value a stranger's opinion? |
