Can my boss suddenly tell me the trousers I have been wearing for the last 7 months aren’t suitable and give me a written warning? She said they look to much like leggings! When I started she pointed it out and I said they were trousers... no more said about them until now sorry about the boring post but can’t rant anywhere else as she seems to have spy’s everywhere |

Where I work I would be telling someone what the problem is first and give them time to change/make improvements if no change then give a verbal warning followed by a written warning. What does it say in your contract about work attire? In my eyes your boss is way over the line |

That’s what I thought! Think she’s got it in for me since I played her at her own game and she didn’t like it |

Where you work should have a disciplinary procedure to follow, going straight to a written warning is unusual as verbal would normally be the first course of action so sounds like they've overstepped the mark. |

States black trousers, mine are black trousers but a soft material, more comfortable as it’s lots of physical work but apparently they look like leggings! We should get a verbal then a written but I never got a verbal as when she mentioned it before she never asked me to get new ones she just rolled her eyes at me, got called in today and said I have to get new ones and it’s a written warning |

Suppose it’ll ultimately boil down to what’s in your contract. She might skew it to say the conversation you had before was a verbal warning and given you’ve done it again, this justifies a written warning. Will be hard for you to prove otherwise if she’s on the hunt to cull staff. Just cast your eye over the dress policy again and apologise in writing if you like your job. A written evidence trail is like gold at an unfair dismissal hearing and HR hate it. If you don’t give a shit, go in again in your leggings and when she pipes up, take em off, shove the gusset of them in her face and then sit back down at your computer (or whatever it is you do). When security come to remove you, just claim sexual harassment when they’re dragging you out with your snickers around your chin. She’ll hate being a boss then. |

Even if it was a verbal warning there would be a written record of it being given. |

All depends what yr company policy says about dress code and presentation... but I’d argue the point that you av being wearing them for 7 months and have had no previous information or concerns from management about them and that it now fall falls into the realms of a working practice, which they should of notified that they were now unacceptable and by giving u this notice that should of been it, not a warning if there had been no issue b4 ... |

I had a verbal warning once many years ago. Since it's part of a process they sent me a letter telling me I'd had a verbal.
Ask to see your file...to get a written she would have at least had to have put something abput a verbal in there.
If not sue for millions and take us all out for a bevvy. |

Everything has to be documented. Otherwise you could clam that you are been victimised/unfairly treated/ been bullied by you manager. Don't let them get away with it. Take the fight to them |

Can you find another pair where you bought them and take a pic of the label which clearly states they are trousers and not leggings?
Also, does your dress code state the specific style of trouser? If it doesn’t, I would suggest this is a matter of personal choice and certainly not a disciplinary offence. A quiet chat as suggested above should have been sufficient.
Sounds like overkill to me. |

Iv just looked through both handbooks and neither even say black trousers!! Just says a uniform will be provided, we get our tunics but just got told black trousers, no leggings or jeans but doesn’t state a specific style and the handbooks don’t even say black trousers so I will take this with me tomorrow |

Well firstly is there a dress code?
Then...verbal warnings usually before written.
Then...should have been told before warning to get a chance.
So I suggest a grievance is appropriate and that would involve an informal chat firstly to agree what is correct and proper. ACAS if that doesn’t work or agreement not reached. |

There has to be a disciplinary process followed. Many now do not include a verbal warning except as a verbal written warning. To go straight to written warning with no previous documentation is normally for gross misconduct. This doesnt appear to be that. Ask for a copy of the disciplinary procedure and the documentation of the verbal warning. If u have a union ask their as advice too. Ask to speak to HR with your queries |

Are you not in a union? If not get in one that covers you're employment type, there's loads on the net, research them. I wouldn't stand for that without questioning it, sounds like she's testing you to see what you're initial reaction is before piling in. Nip that in the bud before it gets worse. |
