How short dress/skirts are acceptable/or not working in office.

Your opinion please?

I think it depends on how short you mean. Mid thigh? I'd say that's fine, just about covering your bum? Nice to look at but I'd guess not appropriate.

I don't work in an office but mid thigh is as short as I go at work xx

We have a girl at work who wears incredibly short skirts. I pretty much get a view of her pants every day. She is not showing off - I think she is genuinely unaware of what she is doing.

Short is fine with me but then we are a pretty laid back office.

I'd say this falls firmly into the "nobody else's fucking business" category. If the style, cut, fabric, whatever is suitably "business" for the particular workplace's dress code and intimate areas are covered then it's nobody's business but the skirt wearer's if it's an inch above the ankle or an inch below the bum cheeks. If you arbitrarily decide it's 'too short' that's a you problem.

It is still true that if a woman wants to be taken seriously at work she needs to dress in a business like way.

Mind you I wouldn't take a man seriously if he turned up in tiny shorts.

Depends on the workplace. Personally I'd stick to a couple of inches above the knee, and make sure my modesty was intact in case of accidental slippage.

The suspenders would show and people would get the wrong idea. I prefer tights, or holdups plus shorts so flashing is impossible.

I think you've hit the nail on the head when you say "people wouldn't get the wrong idea". You only need to read the forums for a couple of days to realise (if you'll didn't already) that a good proportion of men think women dress for their pleasure, even at work. A short skirt and/or stockings in the workplace would mean that quite a few men would think a woman was 'up for it's whatever 'it' is.

Quite. I dress for myself. I'm at work to work. I want to be taken seriously as a professional, not looked at as a sex object.

Even in public for Fab purposes, to be honest, my face is up here, I'm a person, etc (I'm much more open to sexual stuff in that context, but more flirty knowing look rather than flashing my genitals).

Depends on the nature of the job and the environment you work in. I’m not an advocate of dressing provocatively in the work place, that leaves said person open to any manner of unwanted/uncalled for comments etc (from both Male and female)

I would think most employers have a dress code in the workplace policy. Short skirts/split sides/low cut tops ... I would say are a no no.

Or it's a nice colour or a comfortable fabric that they don't realise is unsuitable?

Best not to assume that people are trying to turn you on at work. Could end badly for everyone.

In new Zealand men working at the airport wear sarongs. I watched passengers getting off a flight. Everybody was wearing a sarong, and flip-flops. Different cultures.

Not the usual legs/arse/cleavage on show situation but I worked in a call centre a few years ago, it was really warm so I wore cold shoulder (cut out at the shoulders) top with leggings. The style of top was racer back and it was a deep cut and I was told I had to go home and change because “too much of my back was on show and it was distracting others”. Not my boobs or legs or anything, my back and shoulders! What was more frustrating is that guys were walking round in shorts (most of them above the knee) or with vest style tops and that was ok. I don’t have a problem following rules and procedures but I feel like my manager at the time just didn’t want to have to hide his ogling so made a fuss

Or am I completely off the mark and should I have thought about those areas being on show before leaving for work that morning? lol

Like I said, it was a proper scorcher and I was covered up from the chest down tbf!

Manchester (she/her)

My priorities when getting dressed.

I pick an item (today I'm wearing a green sleeveless top). How do I create an outfit (trousers/ jacket etc). Is everything clean and ironed? Is it appropriate to the situation? Is it appropriate for the weather or adjustable depending on climate control? What shoes work with it that suit the amount of walking I need to do? Is it too fiddly for the occasion? Makeup. Jewellery and accessories. Does it make me feel nice (in myself for myself)? Check for potential of wardrobe malfunction.

Then, if I'm trying to impress someone, I'll care what they might think. Only if I'm meeting for the potential of sex do I want those thoughts to be sexual.

You could always not stare or just appreciate someone making an effort to look nice rather than assuming she is on the pull.

It shouldn't just be the responsibility of a woman to think about how her choice of clothing might be considered.

I'm a Manager of a team of men and I'd be disappointed if I got a complaint from the ladies in another office about this tbh.

Yes but women need to think about this every day.

When our kids were in secondary school a note was sent home asking that parents stopped their daughters wearing short skirts and low cut tops to school as it distracted the male pupils and staff. No note was sent home advising the male pupils that behaving inappropriately towards women due to what they were wearing was unacceptable.

If they'd asked that all pupils stick to school uniform by wearing clothes that covered certain parts of their body it would have been preferable. God knows how the males coped at pe time when it was required that they all wore shorts.

Why can't guys just deal with their own thoughts and feelings and let us dress comfortably?

What's your opinion on topless calendars in engineering workshops?

"As women we're so often tasked with dealing with the burden of male attraction from a worryingly young age. In all situations.

Why can't guys just deal with their own thoughts and feelings and let us dress comfortably?

This"

I honestly, I could rant about this for days. As a Male who's perfectly capable of looking at an attractive woman and enjoying the small pleasure this affords me without wolf whostling, making lewd comments, leering, gawping, drooling, assuming they're 'up for it' or approaching them to make uncomfortable and unwanted attempts to chat them up - and all this while STILL being able to do a day's work without being dangerously distracted... I just don't understand what on earth is wrong with 90% of my fellow penis owners that stops them comprehending very, very basic principles of civilised behaviour.

"I might get criticism for this but..... I think alot of women enjoy the attention.... Why else wear something unsuitable..

Unsuitable for who or what?

See my example... Boobs popping out in engineering workshop.. No need

If I worked in an engineering work shop I'd cover up for sure because I'd want to be taken seriously by all my colleagues.

Well where I work not allowed to be on display where women might see them!

Sexist lol

I see plenty on my travels to various sites.. We actually send them to our customers at Christmas lol

It is fewer than 90% in my experience to be fair to the men I've worked with. However the number of guys who do behave the way you describe make it necessary for women to consider what they wear to work quite carefully

We had a girl at the airport that used to wear a skirt that just covered her arse, till she got to the check in desk and boarding gate. She got fed up with all the lewd comments, being treated like a piece of meat.
