Panic attacks
Jump to: Newest in thread
I don’t deal with them very well so watching this with interest. I do try and take myself out of the situation but like you I often get them after the fact so it’s not an option to remove yourself from the stress, just have to let them pass I suppose. Hope you get it under control, it’s horrible x |

I had a big one yesterday at the hospital and after. Finally when i was calm i had a walk centred my thoughts and it calmed me and i heard the birds sing and sitting watching the world go by.
Kind of nice.

"They come out of nowhere and never really leave. I get them when the stress is gone how do everyone else deal with them? Iwfy x ."
Do you get propper panic attacks?
I've had them where I freeze and can't talk for 12 hours and am living in terror.
I worked on my mental Health to prevent getting them.
If you get a real panic attack there is nothing you can do to stop it or for yourself out.
So I am perscribed beta blockers but will obtain benzodiazepine if I can if I am having a panic attack.
I think I would ask for paramedic to come with a vallium or xanax if possible.
Otherwise the best you can do is beta blockers. |

From what I've read and heard from a close member of family, panic attacks happen because of something from the past triggers it, you might not be aware of what that is, but in certain situations when they do come on, it's normally some trigger from way back.. Their horrible, I have them too |

I did an all nighter once and the next day I was on a course.
I kept awake by drinking shed loads of coffee.
That evening about 9pm I had a panic attack... indescribable fear...felt awful....was immobilised |

I've only had one years ago, but something that might help is accupuncture. I know it sounds way out there, but whenever I am really stressed i book in. Often feel much lighter and floaty.
If you go down this route, check they are registered with British accupuncture council though. |

I would advise anyone that has panic attacks to Google grounding strategies. They take a bit of practice (practice when feeling OK so you know what to do) but they are a game changer. |

Suffered with these for years but got through them in the end. It was having a state of mind to control it if you don’t have it then try to train your mind it doesn’t happen overnight but you can do it. Think positive and knock them out the park, the important thing for you to understand is you are not alone, well done you for posting this xx btw mindgym is a very good site ?? |

If people want to know what it feels like they should swallow a 2 grams of and wait for it to kick in.
People might doubt it but we had the same feeling without overdosing on drugs.
Some idiots will say "what the fucks up there's nothing wrong with you"
....but actually you can't hear more than 1 word or answer simple questions.
Luckily I don't get panic attacks frequently anymore.
Sometimes it's happened to me in rooms full of strangers and I am too terrified to stand up. |

BASICLY it's my autism/anxiety elevating my heart rate untill it can't stop rapidly beating and then my brain goes funny.
So I treated the anxiety and learned to manage it via routines. |

Practice meditation as much as possible.
Look up grounding and practice this. When you feel a panic attach coming on, ground yourself, concentrate on what you can feel (earth beneath your feet, feel if the wind, a hand on your arm, whatever works), what you can hear, focus on your breath, feel yourself breathing in (a hard breath through the nose helps get more oxygen in) abs let the breath flow out, focus on that. |

Grounding will help you too. Classic signs of not being grounded are feeling light and floaty, being ditzy and clumsy and forgetful. |

I used to get them very, very bad and two things have helped me enormously:
One was meditation and breathing exercises. One soothes your mind, the other teaches you control of your breathing, so if there’s an attack coming, you know how to get your breathing regulated fast.
The other thing is, with each attack thinking very consciously about the course of said attack.
How did it start? How did it feel at the very beginning? What was I thinking about? What was the point where the panic tipped and I felt out of control? etc.
Eventually you learn to recognise the situations where an attack could happen and also learn that it IS all in your mind. You’re fine. Physically you are fine and that was the most crucial thing to recognise when I was getting them.
I still have heightened anxiety sometimes but very very rarely does it progress to a panic attack.
I hope it all helps a little x |

At the immediate moment of panic retreating to a quiet spot and doing something that requires hyoerfocus, like lego. I've got self-sooth box with lego minis and a pack of cards and fidget toys. Being autistic, it kind of comes with the territory. Playing solitaire on my phone also helps.
Mindfulness has helped reduce the number of panic attacks, along with a low dose of fluoxetine. |

I use distraction techniques and controlled breathing.
I know it sometimes feels like you are about to die but nobody has ever died from a panic attack. |

EFT = Emotional Freedom Technique is great for things like
Panic attacks
Weight loss
Phobias
Anxiety
Depression
Stopping smoking
etc
You can learn the basics of EFT in about 10 minutes. EFT is easy to learn and do. It costs nothing to do. |

There are apps that will help you identify triggers, journal, & talk you through a panic attack in real time.
Work on managing stress levels in general. Find something that captures your full attention and do it often. Could be gardening, photography, playing a musical instrument, anything but find something that helps you focus on a task rather than letting the anxious thoughts build up. Practise calmness when you can.
Hate to say it but balanced diet, good sleep routine and regular excersize all help me stay on a more even footing to start off with. |

Find your triggers, keep a journal of when and where it happens, what you were doing... Find the connections.
Google grounding techniques, a good one is 5 things...
5 things you can see
4 things you can hear..so on to number 1
Try to meditate, build a safe space in your mind you can go to when you close your eyes.
Look at places like mind gym.
Also look into positive cbt as it can help |

Paramedic here.....we don't carry Xanax.....we do carry diazepam ( Valium) but would never use it, or any drugs, for an acute anxiety attack.
We would identify and remove any triggers....then coach respirations.
The old paper bag technique does work for some....or if you're a smoker go for a day!
All the mindful, meditation suggestions are very useful
Plenty of YouTube videos.....find one which works for you |
