"So...various options available & wondering what makes a mooncup the preferred choice for some?"
I've started using it recently and won't go back to pads or tampons. I can use it before the period starts so don't have to keep checking myself and worry about leaks. Don't have to think about having spare pads or tampons with me when out or at work. Don't have to empty as often as I used to need to change.
Also you'd be surprised how many places don't have bins for disposing of used hygiene products. That's another headache out of the way.
Oh, and I can sleep in any position I like without worrying about a leak.

The other thing that I like is that I don't have to keep buying things every month. If you look after it it's meant to last for years.

"Interested in trying these but suffer from very heavy periods. Any advice? " I've heard they are really good even if you have a heavy flow. I haven't used one personally though so I cant say for sure.

I'd advice to have some practice of putting it in and taking it out before your monthly starts. Put it in, wear it for an hour or so and take out. It can be tricky till you get the knack of it and you'll also know if you need to trim it's "tail" and by how much.

I’ve thought about getting one, but was worried incase I get any ‘flo’ on my fingers or hand when taking out to empty and reinserting it.
Has this been a problem to anyone? |

Yes, I get some on my fingers during heavier days when the cup is nearly full. I've been using it for 2 cycles now and not sure if more practice will make a difference.
Having said so it's just a bit of it on the fingers, not a blood bath. A wipe with loo paper removes enough of if for nobody to notice when you come out of the cubicle to wash your hands in public toilets (if that's what you're worried about).

Thanks for the advice. That’s what I was worried about to be honest. I might have to invest and see how I get on

Chances are you wont need to empty too often out and about ive used mine for 4 months now and only had to empty it outside of a house once. Yes it can sometimes be a little messy but not a huge deal. Honestly so happy i got mine xx |

"I’ve always wandered about these. Tampons are rubbish when it comes to the unexpected “leak” and I’d seen these... how do they feel inside and are they something that doesn’t overflow?? "
The recommendation is to change after no longer than 12 hours.
Once you learn to insert it correctly it forms a suction seal (use a finger to squeeze it in on one side first and sort of twist when removing else it’s... ouch!) and I’ve never had mine leak. You can’t feel it once it’s in either - if you’re very aware of it, it’s not in properly. |

"After reading this thread I might give one a go.
After you've emptied it to you need to wash it before putting it in again? "
Ideally you would but it’s fine to give it a wipe down if you’re in public. It catches everything if properly inserted so it’s not covered if that makes sense! |

How difficult is it to learn? Daughter tried one but couldn't get it in properly..... |

There are different ways and it’s not too difficult. Takes a couple of goes maybe. There are actually YouTube videos!
I tend to push against one side so it’s flat then pull the sides into the middle. It forms a sort of point then a slight twist once it’s in and off you go! |

I loved my mooncup and had it for about 4 years before my hysterectomy. It can take a bit of getting used to and patience is key when you first try. If you find it tricky just give yourself a break and try again later. The stalk will probably need cutting back and I removed mine completely. Eventually I got so used to it I couldn't feel when it was in until it needed emptying when it felt a bit heavier inside me. I once went to the sexual health clinic and gave the nurse who examined me a shock because I forgot it was in! She was intrigued and got me to explain it to the other staff!
In public loos I just poured the contents down the loo and gave it a quick wipe with toilet roll.
When my period was finished I boiled it for 10 mins and put it away in it's little bag. I usually boiled it again before I started using it again.
I'm also sure it helped with period pains.
If in doubt, have a look at the website and give it a go.
Mrs K.

Is it dry to sit on. Even with tampons I find that sometimes it’s sat wrong. The thought of a moon cup is quite scary on the basis - I wear super tampons and they still over flow regardless of an hour wear. Not that I’m heavy at all.. top half is barely covered but the bottom half is clear wet. It’s also sometimes awkward to sit on or walk with... so what I’m saying is - is it comfortable and do you feel it’s something you can freely use ? |

My sister has always suffered with very heavy periods. She would have to use a tampon & double up on pads & would still flood, sounds like some kind of slasher movie when she describes it! She started using a cup a few years ago & absolutely swears by it, as others have said she has to empty it more often but says it catches everything & was surprised by the volume of liquid it can hold. |

Appreciate all the contributions to this thread ladies (& of course we can't overlook the initial curious gent whose emoji looked somewhat perplexed)!
Always interesting & useful to hear first hand experiences so I hope the discussion has helped some of you |

If it's in correctly you don't feel it whether you're walking or sitting. It doesn't go as deep as tampon either so everything is collected into the cup.
I wore a pad as well as mooncup first couple of days till I got the confidence that there won't be embarrassing surprises.

I love my mooncup. I have used one for a couple of years now and i cut the stem a bit more the longer i had it until now i am confident to have no stem, i just pinch the base to remove. The longer stem was making my stream a bit wayward but not now. I may get a little bit of spotting on the first day and after a bowel movement (sorry for tmi but i nearly gave up before i realised this). Much more comfortable for me that any other option, much less hassle and i think i get far less period pain since i have used one. Its also nice not to have to go to the shop every month and much better for when the flow is very light. |
