"So let's say I have my Google account signed into laptop. Can they see the photos backed up to Google? Let's say I go onto Facebook? They can't see conversation or posts can they? Let's say I use an app on mobile phone on their WiFi. Surely they can't see what app I'm using? I completely get the web history element as that's a URL from an ip address. It's the other stuff that freaks me. " Best way is to ask them what they can see on your laptop.

"This is just one of the many monitoring services out that and it doesn't matter where you are, as soon as you have an internet connection, it can upload data." Oh fuck..... "How much can an employer see on a work laptop? I'd never log on here but my employer also owns the IT firm who supply the laptops. How does it work? If I'm on the work WiFi on my phone can they see what sites I am on? If on the work laptop at home would they see what sites the laptop visits?? Like I said nothing major to hide but I worry that firms install key logging software etc and just monitor everything. Does that go on???? " Depends who you work for?

" I use to work in IT before doing what I do no; we use to use a program called Active Trac - this would sit quietly, undetected in the background and monitor EVERYTHING the user does. It would monitor keystrokes, conversations, periodically do screen grabs, know what websites you've been on and for how long, auto record the screen if prohibited websites were visited, see productivity of the user and do mass reporting once a week. Very useful.

"Many companies allow you to use their equipment for some casual use during breaks/lunch but all must still be within bounds of company policy so some news, bit of gmail/hotmail correspondence is fine and is protected by that services SSL baring any client side monitoring tools but should really aim to stick to is work assets are for work and not personal things. Not many will know or have read in their contract, usually anything done on a work computer/laptop, in work time or not, is the intellectual propery of the employer unless otherwise agreed." This is correct and what people need to understand - along with fair usage, so a bit of Facebook is likely to be allowed etc, but comes down to quite simply you there to work, and if they think you are simply sitting there just facebooking all day long, it isn’t about the site you have accessed but more the case you Simply not doing any work, and using their bandwidth for your gain not theirs. Not many will know or have read in their contract, usually anything done on a work computer/laptop, in work time or not, is the intellectual propery of the employer unless otherwise agreed. However the view that VPN,SSL will save you when you sat on someone else’s WiFi - especially an enterprise company one, it won’t. Not only does the IPR statement above stand, but technically the way to think about it is you in prison and sending your letters via the prisons post service, it may eventually end up being delivered by Royal Mail, bit before that I can in essence open that letter, read it, before sealing the letter up. Simple answer if you don’t want your company, or a stranger not having access to your information, don’t use any WiFi other than your own, use 4g, and only use apps that encrypt end to end,
