Never expierinced that, all the ones I have encountered have been fresh and beautiful. Could be your imagination tricking you. Or they are becoming staticly charged.
Or it's a defence mechanism, like electric eels. Check if they really want you down there before you get the full power of a hair curling 9 volts blasting you across the room and putting you in AandE.
