I don't see whats wrong with them and why so many people get a cob on if you send one. Like people have said it's merely a little nudge to say "I like your profile take a look at mine". Not very worthwhile for a single bloke mind cause you're expected to put a little more effort in but for couples and single ladies I think they're worth while.

"... im always scared they winked me by mistake and dont want me replying "
That's crazy!
I don't check them all the time. I wink at folks I've chatted to, just as a reminder to them that I'm still here Have been known to wink at someone I quite fancy, just to test the waters.

Yea it's a pain in the arse when you take the time and effort to write a decent message and then it just get's deleted or not read so sometimes I'll just send a wink then if they message or wink back then I'll message. |

I think Winks are great, as long as they are not overused.
For me, if someone's profile matches what I'm looking for and I don't fall fowl of any of their stated requirements I will generally open up with a proper introductory message.
But if there could be a sticking point, or I'm not sure if they will be interested, I will often wink and then if I receive a wink back will send the message.
As someone else said it's like a smile over a crowded bar.
I think it everyone replied to emails, even if to say 'sorry not interested' then winking would be less important, but certainly in my experience most couples don't bother replying no matter how much thought you have put into messages, so in cases where the profile isn't an exact match, winking can be a good place to start in order to communicate to someone who actually wants to be communicated with!

I don't like them and can't see the point in them. If you wanna get in touch then message me, cos a wink means nothing to me, and a wink from 300 miles away from a blank profile makes me really wanna jump on a train and dash down there...FFS!
I always apologise if I've inadvertantly sent a wink, cos it sometimes happens when the page has shifted on the screen and I've pressed a button at the wrong time...I never, ever send them intentionally and don't like getting them either....waste of time in my book. |

Considering the amounts of emails females get, and having to compose each one on the fly with the risk of not getting a reply, I like to weigh my chances.
So I wink, a gentle 'Howdy!'. If I get a wink back (or more) then its safe to proceed. If I get nothing back say after 7 days, then I move on, safe in the knowledge I had not wasted my time |

I quite lik them, they are a friendly hello, or similar to a smile, which someone else has remarked on this thread. I don't remember to look every day, my OH tends to look more than I do.
I do wink at people myself, again its a friendly hello.
What I don't like though is people assuming ill meet them just because I've winked them. I have winked and then received messages back asking when we are going to meet without even attempting to get to know anything about us etc. My standard stock phrase is 'its a wink, a friendly hello, it does not mean I am shaving my genitals in anticipation' |

We dont mind winks, we think they are a great way to get noticed, But like one said already if people actually messaged back even if just a thx no thx we wouldnt use them, we have read many profiles saying they wont reply to mail from people they wont meet, but yet expect you to mail them lol, we wont mail anyone who states they dont reply to mail, we wink if we get winked back we,ll send mail, if we get winked at we,ll wink back and expect them to mail us, unless they awesome and we wont wait lol |

Have to say that it's a quick way to note your interest in someone without emailing them, much like having your pics fab'd it depends on the response you get with regard to if it's a waste of time or not. |

Agreed. It depends on the person doing the winking and how they personally use the function.
Some folks will just use them as a friendly hello while others will send winks to test the water so to speak. |
