The CF post code

Here are the facts:

* Prep is not a treatment for HIV, despite containing similar ingredients.

*It is ONLY given to HIV negative people.

*If someone who takes prep is exposed to the HIV virus, they are extremely unlikely to contract it.

*To date there are only 4 cases globally where prep hasn't worked, but it was up against a rare and particularly aggressive strain of the virus.

*Prep does not protect against any other STD.

Think of it as being along the same lines as a vaccine.

Those who take prep AND use condoms are the safest people to play with.

"And who takes prep? "

That's like asking who has Hep B vaccinations. It's another defence against the nasties out there for sexually active people.

Just to adjust your facts slightly.... PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is given as Truvada(emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate)

Truvada IS one of the drugs given to HIV+ people in addition to another drug (combination therapy)

Otherwise a very good post and facts

Who takes prep?

Lots of people.

Who should take prep?

Everyone on here that’s HIV negative, IMHO.

It’s an extra layer of defence against that horrible virus that none of us want.

Queue the safe sex only brigade shooting it down (please, spare us the lectures, a condom won’t protect you if it splits and yes, that can happen).

To some, this is true, although the risks of sex in general, whether protected or not are a far more wide ranging spectrum than most seem to realise.

Wearing a condom is a good defence, but isn’t the be-all and end-all.

I agree

PrEP is a good thing

Dropping all your sexual safety barriers because you're on it, not so

Definitely.

The amount of dudes I see stating they’re on it so they’re happy to take on all cummers (literally and figuratively) makes me think “you’re probably not for me mate”

Another one that everyone on here should be doing: Getting tested at least every three months (three months being the window period for syphillis).

I think not. People who play safe are unlikely to change because a playmate is on PrEP, and rightly so.

I've had people assume I'll have unprotected sex because I can't get pregnant.

Where can we get this treatment?

Is it through GP or is it a private treatment?

There’s the prep impact trial on at the moment but that has eligibility requirements.

It’s available privately through a company called dynamix international

I think what they mean is who is entitled to it. Do you get it on the NHS? What makes someone entitled to get it? Are they already classed as risky? Or do you pay for it privately?

There must be criteria for it - so what is it?

The prep impact trial is mainly for gay and bi men. That’s currently the only way to get it free on the NHS.

An HIV+ partner who is on treatment and adherent to medication will be undetectable and therefore cannot pass the virus on, so no need for PrEP

HIV positive people should be on a different treatment, which would bring the ability to pass the virus on down to zero.

That was kinda my point

That people will risk bareback with numerous partners

An inconvenient itch or a bit of cock puss is worth that risk

but when there was a death knoll looming, suddenly, the majority changed their outlook on things

Now PrEP is available to some, there are users who have reverted back to wild & wanton ways

A person with HIV and unaware of their status and not on medication will have a high viral load and therefore infectious.

and its this sense of entitlement that is killing this country. I can't get support for issues my kid has because there is no budget available despite having all appropriate diagnoses but there is funding available for preventative medication when all you really have to do is cover it up for 10 minutes. Selfish is what I call it!

Whilst I sympathise with your situation, that response is simply ignorant and unhelpful.

Condoms aren’t 100%, HIV needs to be eradicated and points of view such as that doesn’t help at all.

Most of us on it pay for it ourselves and use it as an added layer of protection on top of condoms AND regular testing.

By the same token would you advocate not treating those that have acquired HIV through a bad decision? Because that costs the health service?

What’s killing this country is the scumbag politicians in government and you’re eating it up straight out of their hand and blaming the population.

HIV is a global problem and every government in the world should be doing its bit to help get rid of it, as well as the people.

Your response is selfish, not people wanting a preventative against a preventative disease.

I totally agree with this.

People make all kinds of decisions about their risk and welfare. Including drinking, smoking, drugs, dangerous sports and sex without protection.

The great thing about our health service is that it helps all the people and never judges.

No. It's for people who have tested negative for HIV. It's very important to get tested and show a negative result before taking PrEP. Otherwise it could go the way of antibiotics and become ineffective.

Oops. I misread the question to my answer above. Yes. It's for people who may come into contact with an unmedicated HIV infected person.
