It is a vanilla way of thinking but I don't really blame the guys that think like that, it is not their fault.
Vanilla ladies do the same thing when I tell them immediately I meet them that I am not interested in any kind of relationship beyond having fun.

I don't think they are doing it out of malice. Some may be trying to ingratiate themselves, others might just be trying to be nice. The question really should be why do some people react badly to other peoples attempts to be nice to them.
