I think it changed when prep came onto market. Currently you can be vaccinated against Hep A, Hep B, HPV and Warts. You can take the PrEP pill for free on the NHS from sexual health clinics which prevents you catching HIV if taken daily and even decreases the chance of catching herpes.
So what's left? Syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhoea, all of which are treated with a single dose of antibiotics.
Eliminating HIV risk was a game changer. Ultimately its an individual choice. I've never done a bareback gang bang but I have done bareback with regular fuck buddies of mine and not caught anything from that.

I guess if you want the added attraction of picking up a STI, especially one that is drug resistant, may affect your fertility (chlamydia) incurable (HIV), and that you can potentially pass on to others before any symptoms appear, enjoy your bare-back encounters.
